    Lineage, Ancestry, and/or DNA Tests

I grew up being told that my family was Native American. Now, for the few of you that have met me in person or have looked at my photo, you may notice that I'm lacking the appropriate melanin for that particular claim to be supported. Because of this, I've never leaned heavily on this heritage, never wanted to use it to my advantage, and never wanted to be one of those weirdos claiming to be 1/64th Apache. However, I went down the rabbit hole of trying to track my paternal lineage and hit a hard wall at 1844. Despite trying to find documentation in various state records, I cannot go any further back on my father's side, possibly supporting the heritage my family has claimed for so long, as there were no written records for tribes. Plus, you know, Andrew Jackson's just killing them all off indiscriminately (but also discriminately), make it pretty difficult to go back any further.

I am possibly going to try one of the various DNA tests, but I'm heavily reserved because I don't like the idea of taking such a test and sharing my information with who knows what entities. Have any of y'all ever taken any of these tests? Or just try to track your ancestry? Did you get any surprising, edifying, or otherwise interesting results?

I'm uneasy about the whole industry. I personally do not care about my lineage enough to justify the act of paying to sending my literal genetic source code to some company for whatever their proprietary analysis does with it, which could include that data being shared or leaked, intentionally or not. Additionally, I hope (but don't expect) my relatives to have the same restraint. It feels unethical to me for someone to do it without the consent of close relatives.

You hit spot on as to why I don't like the idea of doing it. The other issue I have found is that they share your information to help you connect with family members? I only want to do this to try to track down my second great grandfather, because there is no information about him except for his marriage. I would be worried because I already have family with whom I don't want contact, and that could be a potential avenue.

My family was strange and told a lot of stories, I have come to find out many of those are not true. Now I am trying to track down what is true.

I've always been a bit afraid that there's a nazi war criminal in my ancestry or something, as there is a small enclave of my paternal family still in Germany.

On the other hand, Germany had the coolest knights in medieval times imo, so finding out I'm descended from a hero in shining armor who defeated 3-score of the enemy whilst drunk and missing his left foot would be pretty cool.

In any case, I wish you the best of luck in finding the answers you seek.
