Chat Rooms

Postby Jesse Smith » February 19th, 2015, 12:34 am

Here you con voice your opinion on the chat rooms. If you want them, what chat rooms should we have? Based on the activity since the forms were set-up again, which also had the chat rooms set-up, but not linked to, the system chat rooms kicked the bucket, Sim Battle is looking like it'll kick the bucket, Smash Brothers looks like it's getting a tiny bit of action, and Pokemon looks active.

If they do stay, I was thinking of having just a video game chat, and maybe a RPG/Pokemon chat.

But if any one knows of popular video game topics that might be good for generating new members, like they did a very good job at years ago, post away.

chat/fast_index.shtml to look at them.

Def pokemon. It's been the most active for a while. Maybe some kind of tinychat esque system with user generated rooms.

If any one thinks upgrading them would be a good idea, here's one to look at

Keeping pokemon would be a good idea. Getting it back into high google rankings would be ideal, but I'm not sure how we'd go about accomplishing that.
Having Sim Battle around might be good as a general/alternative, but I might just be being nostalgic. I'm not sure how useful smash would be. It might have some draw if highly ranked, advertised, but I'm not sure. I'd say get rid of it for now.

Upgrading to a new system seems like a good idea in the long run. Depending on how long that would take, making short term improvements to the current system might be worth looking into. When vgchat started displaying the default nginx page I assumed the worst, and started trying to set up sort of an alternative chat. While that's no longer necessary, it did leave me with a decent testbed. The main problem is I had to find the old everychat perl module it was based off of, and it's not a very exact replica.

At the very least, reducing size code to sizes 1-3 instead of 1-6 would hamper spammers potential to be obnoxious. Also, the report trouble link is going to an old chat admin's e-mail.

I haven't had a chance to check phpfreechat out yet, but it looks good at first glance.

I've had a chance to setup phpfreechat locally with WAMP and it seems nice. There are a list of "commands" admins can use like instant banning in the chatrooms, no more emailing and waiting for it to happen. Private messaging, censor on/off, smilies and some other good options.

As far as I can tell there is no ability to send private messages or to ignore certain users on PHPfreechat, two features I feel like our current chat desperately needs. The ability to talk with who you want the way you want is important for making people feel secure and welcome in any chat community, and they should not feel like they're moving to the Stone Age after coming here from Skype or IRC. User harassment and flooding continue to be issues and giving non-mod users some tools to combat them is a perfectly reasonable expectation. I'm also somewhat concerned that the software doesn't appear to have much support, so if someone finds a glitch or exploit they can abuse there may not be much we can do about it. I do however like the simplistic/clean design of the software, and that it seems to be easy to use. It certainly could be an improvement over what we have now.

Personally I'd rather see something like BlaB chat here because of how many options it gives users, because it allows forum users to automatically reserve those usernames on the chat, and because it has support for different user groups and other tools to make moderation a lot easier. The main disadvantage being is that it does cost money, but considering how much history the community has and how much a good chat software could help retain members, I'd say its worth it.

As for the current chat rooms I still recommend keeping the 3 room setup, but changing "Smash Brothers" to "General Chat" and "Sim Battle" to "Roleplay".

A little late on this, but just got back. I like that the chats have been reduced to just three now, seeing as that is still more than we will use but having room for people to go off and do their own thing is nice.

And I also agree with the size code reduction. And, yes I'm nostalgic about how the chat looks and would be slightly sad if it got updated, even if it was for the best!
On that topic aswell seeing as the reduction would be to help stop spam, comes the terms of mods. While we shouldn't have to worry about it right now, due to VG being gone for awhile, but as always something that we will need. If everything has been reset to back in what 09, then I am one!

Sorry if any or all of this has been taken care of, I haven't been able to get on and see for myself (which is very odd seeing as I'm on everyday *keeps webpage open*)
The great return, rise to power.

I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem like the same spammers..the hour long ones. I was unsure if there were mods or just less motivated spamming! Though, we do need a system if we don't.

While you're at it, consider adding back a main page shoutbox. A lot of people also enjoyed that feature.

It was really active for some time. It started dying when it started glitching and **** up. Maybe something that is a bit more like a chat, or more real-time would be awesome.

Since we're on the subject of spammers, my ghetto client-side chat filter is better than ever.

Thanks man. I'll make a guide with pictures and everything when I get a minute.

Other than that, I tried to make it more user-friendly by making an .html file with the script included inline, so chatters could keep on their desktop or whatever, kinda like you suggested earlier. I can tell the script runs when using this method, because the tab title changes, but the rest of it doesn't seem to function at all. I think it might be a permissions issue, something to do with when the chat was modified to not allow custom forms, maybe.

Jesse been fiddling with the code or something, because the IP addresses are now showing up as redirects to searches for them on Google. Don't really see the point in that but at least we know our glorious leader is paying attention.

I was there when he was fiddling around. Did it to save room. Personally I don't like it, but I can see why mobile users with tiny screens might enjoy the extra space.

Not too sure how it would fare as a chat room but Elder Scrolls might be worth trying as a chatroom. Skyrim & Oblivion are insanely popular and have thousands of mods each, about 40.4K mods for Skyrim & 27.6K mods for Oblivion on Nexusmods.

Also I had no idea about this until just recently. Crazy ****.

For the fourth year in a row, Jeremy Soule’s music to The Elder Scrolls series has made the Classic FM Hall of Fame top 300 – the world’s biggest poll of classical music tastes. Ranked 11th overall (just behind Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 in F major Op.68), it’s a huge honor for The Elder Scrolls franchise and a testament of the amazing fans of the series.

Thanks to all the fans that voted!

Hard to believe it's been 17 years since I first discovered your chat room and made my first friends on the internet. Glad you brought it back.
