I might be able to bring back the very old threads.

For every thing that's at

archive/Forums.shtml

I might be able to convert the threads to phpbb so they are part of the forum. I just found this...

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=1722325

It's from 2009, the year the back-up is from, so it just might be possible!

And then

should also look *way* better!

Would people really want to post on 6 year old threads though? It might help pretty up the archives though. I've been getting pretty fond of the starting over from scratch thing that we've had to do tbh.

It would increase the odds of new visitors registering when the boards don't look like

So the hack literally f***ed the forums pretty badly huh?
Is that why some of the old frequent posters have stopped going on this site? Such as Lord of Spam. Are they skeptical?

Exactly! The forums could be compared to a restaurant that opened in 1997 with their own discovered awesome recipes and ended up the most popular restaurant in town. Then over the next 18 years, other restaurants come along with great recipes, so the original restaurant get's way less popular. Then comes February 2015 and some one burns down the restaurant, and all copies of the recipes are gone!!

They're skeptical because maybe some people out there miss reading their own words. :P

But the other point is, we don't really have anything to show for just how long this site has been standing. When someone new comes in and sees Jesse's post count and his join date. They may look around and be all like "Where's the proof?"

I think having some of those forums come back is a good idea, however, it'd be wise to pick what ones that would generate discussion. Not ones that seemed like it would, only for it to collect dust for a few years.

The size of the database is the biggest challenge to doing this! First time around it timed out! If I'm lucky, it's just because I left my computer on when I went to work, hoping it would be finished when I got back, and that possibly just caused my internet connection to cut off when the display went to sleep, otherwise, I'll have to try to figure our where it's at when it times out, and try to make it start there when I re-run the script.

Yes, I did make a back-up of the database! I already had to delete the database once and copy the back-up to it, due to it spitting out an Internal Server Error after going through one of the steps again after running it again! This is a 322 meg database!!

holy **** that is hard as **** to read. as far as old posters, people move on to other things when they things they like change. the flavor of the site has definitely changed and one of the things keeping it like it was for so long was the posters themselves.

Some one knows how to make posts that don't like converting!!! I broke the database up into seven .sql files, and trying one of them at a time, only one out of five of them have gone through all the way, the rest messing up while converting the posts!

Got forums, threads, and users converted. Now I'm doing the posts. Got those broken down into 13 mySQL files, and might have to brake some down more to find the posts that are messing it up! Then hopefully every thing will work when I combine every thing into the database, and then work on merging this newer database with it.

Yep, *if* every thing does work when every thing is converted and is then put into one database, and *if* I can then merge the database with this one!

First round I got 84 megs of the posts converted, with 102 megs to keep working with, to try to find the posts that mess them up and remove them.

The tiny little cause of it generating an error...posts with just a ton of random characters in a row with no spaces!!!!

Posts like

nomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomn

jdjdkdjkajkdjdkienandkdianejdjdkdjk

picspicspicspicspicspicspicspicspicspics

soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

being a mile long with no spaces were messing it up!!!

These were *very* looong random characters, like 6,000 characters in a row with no space, and nomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomn was 15,300 characters long!!!
