Book Title: Crime and Punishment
Genre: Classic Literature
Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky
How far are you in the story?: p.120
Do you like the story so far?: Very different to anything I have read, takes the form of first-person narrative, but also as first-person 'running conscience'; ie direct stream of the thoughts in the characters mind.
Additional Comments: Rather tough to get into and read, what with the running conscience and subconscience form of perspective. Also, the fact that every character's dialogue comes off as being a publicised soliloquy (I am aware of the oxymoron ;)) becomes a tad demanding on one's patience.

Book Title: Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
Genre: Historical
Author: William L Shirer
How far are you in the story?: ~p450
Do you like the story so far?: Extremely detailed and objective viewpoint detailing how Hitler rose to power, with all the 'behind-the-scenes' actions that occured that simply cannot be covered in the span of movies of documentaries.
Additional Comments: Great and important read when you look at how Hitler was able to rise to power through deception and cunning, especially when you compare it to recent leaders around the world.

Book Title: Fugitive Days
Genre: Biography
Author: Bill Ayers
How far are you in the story?: 138 pages
Do you like the story so far?: Well, yes and no. Some of the detail trails off into "I didn't need to know" territory as far as some of the sexual escapades go, but nothing really more than "R" rated in my opinion. But it's a biography and also a glimpse into the time period.
Additional Comments: I like how the guy stood up for what he believed after figuring out for himself what was and wasn't right.

The Awakening, a book about female infidelity. It is quite nice to read. Back when it was written, infidelity was something to gasp at. Kate Chopin was disliked because of her writing in this book. I'm only about halfway through the book, and I'm still caught up in the emotion.

*** Emperor of Dune; it's disturbing because it's set a few thousand years after Children of Dune and the main character is a cross between a seven-metre long sandworm and a human with the memory of every single ancestor he's ever had. It starts off weirdly, like practically every other Dune book.

By the way, that Lian Hearn series really left me expecting more. It's just semi-action with no real character development. I especially hate the half-assed sort of fantasy themes in it - it's like "oll i can turn invisible and you don't know how!". Even a sandworm-person combination is more feasible because the process is actually explained.

I just finished Chato's Kitchen. The intense colours and thick textures in Susan Guevara's paintings in this story by Gary Soto's convey the culture of East Los Angeles really well.

I also finished reading Triss late last night, which was filled with amusing anthropomorphism.

I have next to me a huge pile of books to read that I borrowed from the library. I'm not precisely sure which one I'm going to read next. It is a tough decision. I'll probably choose one randomly by reaching over and grabbing the first one I touch.

Quoting Bj Blaskowitz: I don't think anyone would take me seriously when I say this, but Mere Christianity, by CS Lewis

Members here better believe it. Mere Christianity is the most popular nonfiction Lewis book there is. I'm actually disappointed in myself that I have not read it yet, although I certainly have it on my list to read during the summer session. It is going to be one of my more important readings of the session. I read An Experiment in Criticism a few sessions ago and I thought it was amazing. In fact, I have been wanting to read it again but haven't due to other books taking up the position. I'm sure I'll get around to reading it again someday. The longer I wait the better, I suppose. It gave such wonderful insight that I know contributed greatly to my life. I highly recommend An Experiment in Criticism to you, BJ, but I assume you've either already read it or are planning on doing so after Mere Christianity. Anyway, he is great, and I truly appreciate his nonfiction books.

I'm currently reading Diary by Chuck Palahniuk.

I'm a big fan of Chuck's writing style. This particular book is pretty good, although it's not anywhere near as good as Invisible Monsters or Lullaby. I like a lot of themes in this book, especially the point on art from suffering.

The Star-Bearer, written by Dianne Hofmeyr (Do the Whales Still Sing, The Stone) and illustrated by Jude Daly. I have been interested in Egyptian mythology lately. This story has characters that are ***s and ***desses of various aspects of nature, mostly the sky, such as Geb the *** of the earth and Nut the ***dess of the sky. It is a radiant ancient elucidation of how our starry universe was composed and came to be in existence. The entire composition contains familiar fragments of many other culturally inspired mythologies.
