Teachers going on strike
Posted by Killer JordoWell, today is the start of my 5 day long weekend. Yet it may lead up to 3 or 4 weeks. The teachers in BC are going on disciplanary action or some shit, all of my friends are like "yeah school off!" But I'm not. Why? Well think about it. All my classes except Band are semester classes. If we miss 3-4 weeks of this it will hurt my academics. I've gotten my work and crap but still. Once I get back I wont have the same knowledge that I would have if I were to not miss so much school.
Has this ever happened to you or something similiar? How did it turn out?
Posted by The JudgeThere was talk of a teacher strike here a few years back, but I honestly forget if they ever went on strike or not.
Why are your teachers striking? Union stuff, higher wages?
I never would have thought you to be the type concerned with your academic progress (no offense).

And ****it, why does this never happen over here?

None taken. But lately since I moved I have been actually giving a damn about my academics
The teachers already went on strike but class wasn't canceled. Everyone came to an agreement. However, now they are striking for a bunch of new reasons. These are the main three.

Smaller class sizes (in one of my classes we have 38 students!)

librarians can get full-time hours

Alot of students in my school are "special" and have brain problems that set them back about 4 years. So we need more teachers Aids for them
Klarth will you just give it a rest?
Posted by AntYeah, srsly...
Anyways, teachers are little *****s in most cases. whine whine whine.
Posted by Sable WindWow.
Anyway, my teachers went on strike two years ago and it was terrible. Not only was it boring, but... I ended up actually wanting to go back to school.

Actually it all depends on what materials you have at home to study. If you have homework you should be able to study that if the strike lasts for weeks on end. It's always good to breifly read over material in case you forget. Academic knowledge is very easy to maintain. If you have study material with you, just study that. Or think of it as a long vacation. The real problem here would be that it would cut into other vacations. They may knock off a few weeks for winter break or summer vacation and those to me are the vacations of all. If you are like me and keep some stuff at home to review once in a while, you should have no problem maintaining the knowledge you gained during the time the teachers are on strike.
Posted by The PunisherYeah they probaly wont cut into winter breaks, granted its the largest christian holiday of the year, and taking time out of the break would probaly result in a strike, but they will probaly knock on a week or two over the summer, and make you come back early a week or two. It all depends, good luck though.
Posted by Vampiro V. EmpireHappened to me in grade seven. A whole two weeks. I was so excited. And then they're like "lol you gotta make up missed time during the summer! LMFAO"
Then I cried.
Posted by Crazy KI think last year a school near my town went on strike because of wages. Anyways if it cancels school for a few days thats great, but for like months thats no good. That means they will end up adding another month to the school year. :(

Thats suprisingly mature (again, no offense). I want to rep you, but I dont remember if you were going for positive or negative, so just let me know.
That aside, sucks.:(
Posted by JarularaI think it's really stupid for teachers to go on strike because when they decided to become it they knew what the hell they were getting into. Low pay, horrible books, loud *** kids, and **** load of work. Wow ***** now about it. Take it like a man and do it. So I think its stupid and worthless and a waste of educational time. I would like it cause no school but just stupid to be mature about it.

Thats terrible logic. Teachers shape the world's future, in a way. We should be paying them well and making sure that they are able to do their jobs, not telling them to "Take it like a man."
Posted by JarularaI'm not saying that's how it should be. I'm saying that's how it is. Life's not fair you don't always get what you want. I know they deserve better but it's hard to turn over the political choices now. If it was up to me they would be paid more than alot of things.

You may not be saying thats hwo it should be, but you are advocating a course of action that will serve only to propogate the status quo. The only way for teachers to affect a change may, sadly, be to go on strike. If so, I would not be so rash to effectively tell them to sit down and shut up.

My little brother lives in BC with my parents, and his teachers might also be going on strike. He's still a little guy, so it won't affect him much, and he seems pretty happy about it from what I've heard. For the guys in high school it kind of sucks educationally, but I'm sure they're happy to miss school for a couple of weeks. :)
Posted by RichaodYour teachers value fairly small sums of money over your education. Therefore, they are irresponsible teachers (though I really wouldn't know).
It's never happened to me. Probably because we have content/well-paid teachers.

Yeah, this is totally throwing me off as well. I almost gave him +rep for posting this. Even his grammar seems to be right on.
Posted by Darksong XFor the **** the teachers put up with, yeah I understand why they would want to strike for better wages or whatever they want. But they shouldn't have to stop the whole schooling system, that's just selfish.
Posted by Captain CleanoffThink about it, kids. How else are the teachers going to change their bad situation without forcing changes? You can't be an idealist but then say they should just sit back and take it.
Posted by ArwonApparently the BC government has declared teaching an "essential service" making it illegal to strike. (Like with cops and doctors I guess). That's a pretty dodgy tactic... more power to the teachers.
Posted by Killer JordoThe teachers have to be back teaching on thursday the 13th. Or else they will be fined. Like Arwon said teaching is now an essential service. So basically they HAVE to go back to teaching. However I don't really care if they go back to school or not. I know to read ahead and stuff so I'll keep up. However, I don't know about some other people in my class :l

Which is really only a fraction of what you would get from a classroom setting. Education encompasses a lot more than simple text work.

The point is, though, that it's pretty dodgy and possibly illegal of the provincial governement to define it as such... it's only supposed to be used for things that affect life or death.
Posted by Crazy KI think Teatchers are wimpering wine babies. I mean hell there are people out there doing harder work day in and day out and rarely get a week off, and these teatchers all they have to do is Teatch people. Yeah they may not get paid a lot, but I think its a reasonable amout of pay when you get almost a full summer off, and most of the main holidays.
Well thats what I think atleast.
Posted by Wicked SushiI don't have school starting from tomorrow, but it's not because of a strike. I think it's some kind of holiday or something. But meh, what matters is that I have a four day weekend and I can finally sleep more than four hours a day. :D
Quoting Killer Jordo: The teachers have to be back teaching on thursday the 13th. Or else they will be fined.
Haha, oh man. What the hell? They get fined for not working? Heh, I would just quit then, if I were them.
Quoting Darksong X: But they shouldn't have to stop the whole schooling system, that's just selfish.
It's their job and life. There's nothing about being "selfish" if they go on a strike. Take it from their view.
Quoting Crazy K: and these teatchers all they have to do is read the newspaper, play solitare and do crossword puzzles
Fixed for my school.

Teachers might go into next week for strike!
Posted by Vampiro V. EmpireI hope they take away your Christmas/Summer vacation. That would be hilarious.
Posted by Killer JordoIf they take off 2 weeks from my vacation that wont do much. Why? I get off 3 weeks before I did at my old school so.
Posted by mis0Yeah, one year, someone called in a bomb threat like everyday for a month, so we'd have to evacuate every day, and we didn't really learn anything. There was never a bomb.
Posted by Vampiro V. EmpireSomeone wrote a bomb threat on one of the stalls in the boys washroom.
Class was out for almost a week.

What im trying to say is that they dont diserve to get paid so much and have nearly a ful summer off when there are people out there doing harder jobs getting paid less and have only 2 days off of work, and sometimes never get a long vacation.
I agree that they are needed to teach us a lot of things, but I think its kind of pathetic to go on strike.

You do realize that teachers are considered "unemployed" during those two months right? They don't get paid, which is why you see a lot of them take up other teaching jobs like summer school, night-time teaching, and so on.
And yes, when so much depends on them, they do deserve the money they get paid. If not a bit more. It's not like it's an easy job, especially when you teach the older grades. Imagine having to write test after test, work plan after work plan, then come home and read thirty reports each five pages long.
Posted by mis0And, also, teachers usually have a degree in something, so they are paid better. Go to college, you'll end up making more, even if the job is easier. Besides, usually, the lowest paying jobs are the hardest (manual labour), but if you're unskilled, you can only blame youself.
