What's your favourite song intro? Like, the first few seconds of a track.
Right now, mine would have to be Winterstorm's intro, by Machinae Supremacy.
I'll just post up a bunch of awesome intros.
Geddy Lee - My Favorite Headache
Opens with some pretty rad bass, followed up by some distorted noises.
Rush - YYZ
DING ding DING DING DING ding DING DING DING DING ding ding DING ding DING DING DING ding DING DING DING DING ding ding
Angra - Carolina IV
Some pretty neato drums, which get layered on top of.
Arcturus - For To End Yet Again
Aha, goodness knows what this intro is, but it sounds weird in a good way. Reminds me of the Monkey Island game series somewhat, as well - it wouldn't sound out of place in the soundtrack.
Ayreon - Day Sixteen: Loser
Digeridoo!
Dream Theater - Sacrificed Sons
Voices speaking in a foreign language, accompanied by samples of news broadcasts. Very atmospheric and tense, works wonderfully with the song.
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Four minutes of continuum playing. :P
Dream Theater - The Root of All Evil
Low F, followed by some ambient noises. Really impending, and works well not only as the start of the song but as the start of an album.
OSI - Head
Just psychedelic noises, really. Cool ones, though.
Rush - The Trees
I consider the entire first verse to be the intro in an odd way, it just kinda sets the scene. It starts off very quiet and serene, before exploding into a much heavier kinda sound.
I'll try and upload some samples of them all later.
Hallowed be thy Name - Iron Maiden
Has one of the best opening, IMO. Starts off slow and you hear a bell in the backround which foreshadows the death of the character who is being talked about in the song.
Diamonds of Mankind - Twilighting
I just love the way it starts
Memento Mori - Kamelot
Sets up a good mood and showcases the vocals in a very good way.
k gonna steal that format now!
Arcturus - "The Chaos Path"
The whole first minute of this song is great - Garm sounding like a demented clown, and wacky keyboards all over the shop.
Devin Townsend - "Bastard"
Very, very ambient at first until it degenerates into straight-up Devy Metal.
Dream Theater - "Never Enough"
I'm not really a huge fan of the song itself, but the electronic-ish intro is groovy.
Ensiferum - "Lai Lai Hei"
Ambient and folkish.
Frameshift - "When I Look Into My Eyes"
Aggressive and stuff.
Liquid Tension Experiment - "Acid Rain"
Just some impressive guitars and drums.
Machinae Supremacy ft. SounDemoN - "Kings of The Scene"
Beep beep heavy heavy.
Machinae Supremacy - "Attack Music"
Futurama sample.
Machinae Supremacy - "Winterstorm"
Yeah, my favourite right now. Aggressive and speedy.
Mercenary - "Everblack"
Drumroll and heavy guitars pls.
Mercenary - "Loneliness"
Best melodeath intro ever. Great singing and great beat.
Office of Strategic Influence - "Head"
Exotic-sounding and ambient.
Pain of Salvation - "The Perfect Element"
Grim, apocalyptic, lamentable, kickass.
Strapping Young Lad - "Aftermath"
Just plain chaotic and intense etc
Waltari - "Live This!"
Sounds good with bass turned all the way up.
500 Channels - Choking Victim
Journey to the End of East Bay - Rancid
Awesome Forces - The Aquabats
Beer (Song) - Mustard Plug
Yellin' In My Ear - Operation Ivy
51 Gardner - Big D and the Kid's Table
Everything Went Numb - Streetlight Manifesto
Santeria - Sublime
Real You - Suicide Machines
Intro - Trocadero
Walking Away - Catch 22
Whoops, I mean: Root Of All Evil, Answer Lies Within, These Walls, I Walk Beside You, Panic Attack, Never Enough, Sacrificed Sons, and Octavarium by Dream Theater!!!
Edit: and also Smoke Two Joints by Sublime
Behemoth - "Antichristian Phenomenon"
"We would like to see most of the human race killed off, because it is unworthy of the gift of life" followed by nice riffing.
Behemoth - "Horns Ov Baphomet"
For bleeping out the word "Christian" and using a Crowley soundbite.
Satyricon - "Dark Medieval Times"
Creepyness. I also like the intro to Shadowthrone quite a bit.
Arckanum - "Skoghens Minnen Voekks"
Crazyness. It sounds like some forest ritual and raising of an army. Plus, I heard owls on this intro, so it's all good.
Bathory - "Twilight of the ***s"
Quorthon playing around on guitar until he gets that perfect sound that molds into what would be the main riffing for the song.
Odroerir - "Wanenkrieg"
All the songs before this are nice, mellow folk songs and then you have this metal blast out of nowhere.
Nargaroth - "I Burn for You"
This ****ing guy, he slashes my face and he cuts my ****ing ear off. I'm ****ing deformed. **** you **** you, I'm ****ing dying here. I'm ****ing dying. Reservoir Dogs ist Krieg.
Moonspell - "In and Above Men"
The metal caught me off guard.
Johnny Cash - "Mr. Garfield" \m/
He's a good storyteller stfu.
Darkthrone - "Kaatharian Life Code" (had to beat Vampiro)
Still have no idea what Fenriz is saying, but it sounds really creepy. Perfect intro.
Great intro songs:
Nokturnal Mortum - "Black Moon Overture"
Overture? Yeah, it takes pieces out of all the songs, puts them together and makes a killer intro. From the album Goat Horns.
Emperor - "Alsvartr (The Oath)"
Listen to this, that is all. From the album Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
I like that almost every Anal Cunt song starts off with a loud, actually enjoyable screeching and then some heavy guitar riffs come after it.
Also, HIM's "Salt in Our Wounds" starts off like it's going to be a techno song or something. Pretty good.
The first minute or so of Nobuo Uematsu's "The Extreme" has never failed to be interesting.
Um...
Candle by Sonic Youth has some cool arpeggio on guitar. I Am One by the Smashing Pumpkins has quite a cool drum riff (Jimmy Chamberlin has got to be the greatest drummer ever).
And the start of 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk' by Pink Floyd always gets me grinning maniacally.
Looking Down The Cross- Megadeth, it sounds really twisted and evil...just pure badassness.
Pain of Salvation - In The Flesh
Dream Theater - Metropolis, Pt. 1
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around The World
Therion - Kali Yuga (Part 1)
Ayreon - Day Sixteen: Loser
Kamelot - Soul Society
Arch Enemy - Enemy Within
Opeth - Bleak
Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama
Also Among The Living by Anthrax, and The Great Debate by Dream Theater.
All these song I've rewound back to the beggining just to hear the beggining again.
Santana- Oye Como Va
Children of Bodom- Bed of Razors
Rage Against The Machine- Guerilla Warfare.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Funky Monks
Jimi Hendrix- Crosstown Traffic, and Voodoo Child
Inequity- The Bullets Breath
Black Sabbath- The Wizard
Sublime- Wrong Way
Blind Melon- No Rain
Iron Maiden- The Trooper
Yngwie Malmsteen- Spanish Castle Magic
Creedence Clearwater Revival- Fortunate Son
Dr. Dre- **** Wit Dre Day.
Jimi Hendrix- voodoo child
Led Zepplin- Good times Bad times (Great/ catchy opening)
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Can't stop
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under the Bridge
Blind Melon- No rain (wooHOOO whoooooo whoooooo) :D
Metallica- Sanatarium (Beginning solo)
Paradigm Shift - Liquid Tension Experiment
...and...
Universal Mind - Liquid Tension Experiment
enough said.
Territory - Sepultura
Gotta love those drums.
El Scorcho - Weezer
Funk-ay.
Turn It Out - Death From Above 1979
Sirens! =-O
Today - The Great Deceiver
I think that the tremelo effect is really trippy.
Dance With Me - TSOL
Again with the drums.
"sweet jane" - the velvet underground
Leave it to RCT to actually post an answer that's not incredibly dorky.
That's your perspective sir.
mine too!
My favorite song intro has to be Gorgoroths-Destroyer, the screams and crys are just insane.
