Who's Better

Aight, this is sort of a posting game, but it's musically oriented enough to be kept in this board. See, I've noticed so many threads asking which of two bands are better- CKY or HIM, Dream Theater or Symphony X, etc.- that I decided to make one big thread for it. First guy posts two bands, next guy says which is better (and please give a decent explanation), and then posts two new bands. Try to make them bands that people here would have heard of.

Aight, for the first two bands, I just pulled out the first two metalish bands I thought of, so:

Nightwish or Therion?

If you don't know who it is, then don't post. I chose metal bands because a great deal of people here like them.

Therion. The guitars are fantastic, and I like the operatic vocals that just aren't there in Nightwish. I own all Nightwish's albums and I like both bands a lot, but I'm more into Therion for the time being.

Ayreon or Blind Guardian?

Ooh, ooh. Juno Reactor. Their CD what with the tracks from Reloaded and Revolutions never fails to be good music.

Beck. I like the vaguely-folkish alternarock sound.

Agalloch... Or Arcturus?

Arcturus as I haven't heard ant Agalloch.

Metallica or Megadeth?

Megadeth. Far less obnoxious.

The Spice Girls or Immortal?

Immortal. just cuz.

Soilwork or In Flames?

Great thread idea.

In Flames for Jester Race. I don't like Soilwork at all and don't care for later In Flames too much either.

Ulver or Samael? Any era.

I've never actually heard either, but a friend of mine's been ranting about Samael recently.

David Bowie or Jim Morrison?

Rush. Rush had a lot of songs I liked, but there are barely any Beatles songs that I like, other than Live and Let Die.

Slayer, although that one was pretty close. I just respect Slayer more.

Weezer. The Pixies are one of those bands that I should be liking, but I just don't.

Symphony X, I love the orchestra mixed with metal. Nevermore is quite good in their own right, but no where near close to achieving the skill and likability of Symphony X.

Zeppelin, man. I mean, Pink Floyd is great, but some of the best classic rock of all time has come from Zeppelin. I enjoy Kashmir on in particular.

Dream On was Aerosmith, not Led Zeppelin.

Jimi Hendrix. I have a bunch of old bootlegs of him and it's fun to listen to them once in awhile. Not a fan of clapton.

Cannibal Corpse, since them and Obituary got me into metal (before then it was all rap..... I know, I'm ashamed too). Nile isnt half bad though.

Throwdown or Lamb of ***?

I saw both of those guys in concert. I heard the last bit of Throwdown's set (I believe) and I was standing in line to get Death Cult Armageddon signed by Dimmu Borgir while Lamb of God was up. I remember that Lamb of God put on a better show, so they have my vote, though I'd never sit down and listen to them on my own.

I actually decided to download a couple of songs by Psychotic Waltz, and I must say I'm glad I did. These songs are great. However, Green Carnation takes the cake. I might change my mind after further listens, though. :cool:

I love acoustic Opeth, but I feel Judgement-era to present day Anathema is better by leaps and bounds. If this was over Deathier Opeth and Anathema when they were Doom, then Opeth would easily win that one.

Gah, I dislike deciding on two bands because I don't know what all everyone's heard. To make it easy, Dimmu Borgir or Emperor? Both keyboard laden meloblack metal bands that became very accessible and popular bands (for this music) as time went on. Both are also severely criticized by fans of the genre (except early Emperor, in general).

I'd say Emperor, thought I dont like the cookie monster type vocals for either of them.

I would have to go with Razed in Black. Though I have listened to a few good Neuroticfish songs, none of them have grabbed me as much as, say, the DJ RiB trance remix of "Oh My Goth!," "Blush," or "Share The Poison." Also, though their musical style can be compared to that of Nine Inch Nails, I must say I much prefer Romell Regulacion's voice to that of Trent Reznor's. That and the fact that he's from Hawaii scores brownie points with me.

I've heard "Twist Of Cain" by Danzig, which I really didn't like at all, and part of his Black Aria album, which seems okay but certainly doesn't sum up his music. I've heard only Ace Of Spades by Motorhead, which is decent, but I'm not too fond of Lemmy's vocals. I'll say Motorhead though.

Les Claypool is pretty good. He has a one-stringed bass that looks and lights up like a lightsaber! but my vote goes for Flea. I love the bass lines and I mean the guy plays live in his underwear. Thats a lil' ballsy.

Rob Dougan. His stuff is just perfect for ambient listening, and more than one song is in my FPS mix.

The Misfits, because Glenn Danzig was the frontman. And because I really have no idea if A.F.I. are punk or nu-metal (and their album covers suck).

Mr. Vai vs. Mr. Satriani

I'll have to call it even on this one. I only just got Steve Vai's Passion And Warfare album, and I don't have any of his other more consistent instrumental albums (I need Fire Garden and Real Illusions: Reflections in particular).

The only full Satriani album I've got is Engines Of Creation, which is really mediocre (too electronic), and I'm trying to get Surfing With The Alien. I do have some G3 stuff but they're practically even when judged upon that basis.

I haven't heard any Grip Inc. (getting Incorporated, I love Dave Lombardo though), so I'll have to go with Helloween. I'm not too interested in them though, not for starting power metal anyway.

Finntroll or Symphony X? (innovators vs. a band that's never made an original song, although they're good)

Symphony X as I've never heard any Finntroll :(

Get the song Ellytres or Trollhammaren. Generally, Finntroll manage to be both hilarious and really listenable at the same time with their polka-ish songs, although stuff like Vindfard/Mannekopesten (I highly doubt I spelled it correctly) is more like your regular symphonic metal.

Symphony X. I don't like them, but they're not entirely bad.

I think it says something about this Petrucci guy that I've never heard any of his music, and never heard his praises sung anywhere but here.

Hendrix was good, but there are about a few hundred thousand guitarists that could match his skill. His fame was based more on his stage presence than his actual skill. He'd be up there, lighting his guitar on fire and all that.

And another thing, why do people make such a big deal about him playing the guitar backwards? It's not that cool. If I learned that way, I could do it too. I'll bet that I could waste him if we were both playing our guitars the right way, since he wasn't used to playing that way (same goes for Kurt F*cking Cobain, but that's another story).

In my personal opinion, Phil Keaggy is the most proficient guitarist around. Incidently, Jimi Hendrix said so as well, as did Eddie Van Halen (that Keaggy is the best).

I think the fact that Hendrix revolutionized the electric guitar should be taken into consideration here people.

Hendrix, hands down. Tons of metal bands and guitar players since him have been influenced by him. A lot of metal guitarists do stuff based on his style, even though metal today is pretty different than when Hendrix was around...

The biggest problem with everybody voting is that they're taking into consideration that Petrucci is the guitarist for their favorite band, not that he's a good guitarist. Sure, he's good, but he's obviously nothing compared to Hendrix. The only reasons people are even voting for Petrucci is because he's the obvious underdog (us silly Americans, we love the underdogs!), and because he's the member of their favorite band, as I stated before. I could replace Hendrix with Randy Rhoads, and there'd still be people voting for him, even if he clearly wasn't the superior guitarist.

Skill does not begat good guitar playing.

Hendrix is good, but Petrucci has more skill, which is quite evident. I liked Petrucci before I liked Dream Theater. Ask Sabredog, I wrote up a report on him for guitar class about a month before hearing any Dream Theater material. =)

I don't care who's more famous, who did the most drugs, or who revolutionized anything the most. Saying that Hendrix had more fans is about as good as an argument as would be me saying that Petrucci is in Dream Theater and therefore wins. The fact of the matter is that John Petrucci could and would outplay Hendrix, hands down.

Petrucci is imo one of the most advanced and greatest guitarists to walk the planet.

It doesn't matter whether you like Dream Theater's music or no, you're pretty much lying out of your a[b][/b]ss if you claim that Hendrix can play the instrument more proficiently. Yes, we get the idea, you like Hendrix. And, I can absolutely understand why someone wouldn't like Petrucci's playing - many of his more complex guitar solos just aren't everyone's piece of cake. I've heard many Petrucci solos that just don't have the same feeling of pure emotion as Hendrix's. But, throwing bias out the window, you can't really make much of an argument for Hendrix when putting him against Petrucci ability-wise, and it doesn't look to me like you're about to. Petrucci's playing impresses me more than Hendrix's. All I have to say.

They belong to totally different genres. You can't compare them. It's like saying Neal Peart or whoever it was who drums for Green Day, ffs. Petrucci is more talented, and Hendrix was a pioneer of sorts. My vote goes to Petrucci because I've listened to DT more.

Okay, it seems that you guys have established that Petrucci has more skill, but Hendrix had more stage presence and influence. But what about some other greats? I think that Angus Young and Jimmy Paige could whoop both Petrucci and Hendrix any day of the weak.

Angus Young never does finger tapping thats Eddie Van Halen, also Angus is the lead guitar of AC/DC not the rythem. And he would kick Petrucci's a** any day.

I bet Petrucci could not even play an of the solo's Angus Young plays. And he does play them by his self, Malcom Young plays the main riff while Angus is playing his solo.

Yes i've heard Jonh Petrucci before and really he dose not impress me. His solo's are mostly finger tapping and fast playing, wow soo hard. I will say he is a very skilled guitar player, but he's not the best. Jimmy Page and Angus Young are so much better guitar players than Petrucci will ever be.

As a guitarist myself, I'm telling you that you are wrong.

It's so much fun to watch one person try and persuade an entire message board that Angus is superior to Petrucci.

Hey guitarist too, and I know all that Petrucci does, its just finger tapping and thats why it sounds so hard and fast. He is a very skilled guitarist like I said early but he is not even close to the skill that Angus Young and Jimmy Page have.

Angus does a lot pentatonic scales and bends and basic guitar stuff while playing in 32nd notes. Jimmy Paige while playing the stairway solo is going ten nots a second. LETS SEE PETRUCCI DO THAT.

Barney Greenway sounds absolutely horrible on their later albums, too.
