Who's Better

Posted by Acheron

Aight, this is sort of a posting game, but it's musically oriented enough to be kept in this board. See, I've noticed so many threads asking which of two bands are better- CKY or HIM, Dream Theater or Symphony X, etc.- that I decided to make one big thread for it. First guy posts two bands, next guy says which is better (and please give a decent explanation), and then posts two new bands. Try to make them bands that people here would have heard of.

Aight, for the first two bands, I just pulled out the first two metalish bands I thought of, so:

Nightwish or Therion?

Posted by VirtualRealityZone

Who? lol

Posted by Acheron

If you don't know who it is, then don't post. I chose metal bands because a great deal of people here like them.

Posted by Klarth

Therion. The guitars are fantastic, and I like the operatic vocals that just aren't there in Nightwish. I own all Nightwish's albums and I like both bands a lot, but I'm more into Therion for the time being.

Ayreon or Blind Guardian?

Posted by Tinkleheimer

Ayreon

Alien Ant Farm or Green Day

Posted by Hyper

eh

Alient Ant Farm I guess, they had a song on VH1 a few years ago. I can't even remember the name, but I'm pretty sure it was better than most Green Day.

Eldritch or Grip Inc.?

Posted by Ch

Eldritch

RHCP or Janes Addiction?

Posted by Klarth

RHCP, easily. Jane's Addiction just annoy me.

Junkie XL or Juno Reactor?

Posted by Acheron

Ooh, ooh. Juno Reactor. Their CD what with the tracks from Reloaded and Revolutions never fails to be good music.

Franz Ferdinand or The Bravery?

Posted by Corrupt

Quoting Majesty: RHCP, easily. Jane's Addiction just annoy me.

Junkie XL or Juno Reactor?

I wanted to answer that. :( I say Junkie XL, but Juno Reactor are still great.

Anyway, Franz Ferdinand. I haven't even heard any of The Bravery's stuff, even though I want to.

Beck or Ben Folds Five?

Posted by Klarth

Beck. I like the vaguely-folkish alternarock sound.

Agalloch... Or Arcturus?

Posted by Hyper

Arcturus as I haven't heard ant Agalloch.

Metallica or Megadeth?

Posted by Klarth

Megadeth. Far less obnoxious.

The Spice Girls or Immortal?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Immortal. just cuz.

Soilwork or In Flames?

Posted by Shin-Ra

Great thread idea.

In Flames for Jester Race. I don't like Soilwork at all and don't care for later In Flames too much either.

Ulver or Samael? Any era.

Posted by Klarth

I've never actually heard either, but a friend of mine's been ranting about Samael recently.

David Bowie or Jim Morrison?

Posted by Corrupt

David Bowie.

Simple Minds or Gary Numan?

Posted by TheSecondComing

Interesting to see that already many people have completely gone against the point of the game and made worthless posts that have probably stolen a chance for a good post from another member.

EDIT: Ah rats, Corrupt beat me, and his post was awful too.

Posted by Klarth

I suppose we should all wait for TheSecondComing to post in future because our efforts are evidently going to be wasted :)

Gary Numan, but before he went into all those other experimental genres like funk.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra or Queensryche?

Posted by MetalVox~55

TSO!!!

Evergrey or Blind Guardian?

Posted by Klarth

Blind Guardian. I've only heard one Evergrey song and it didn't impress me much :(

Office of Strategic Influence or Chroma Key?

Posted by Porcupine

OSI. Good use of Steven Wilson.

The Beatles or Rush?

Posted by William

Rush. Rush had a lot of songs I liked, but there are barely any Beatles songs that I like, other than Live and Let Die.

EDIT: Nevermind. It has to be bands I think.

Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath?

Posted by Sapphire Rose

****, Iron Maiden. Just because I have more of their CD's and thus listen to them more. Good job making me choose between two great bands though.

Pantera or Slayer?

Posted by G-Sides

Slayer, although that one was pretty close. I just respect Slayer more.

Weezer or The Pixies?

Posted by Acheron

Weezer. The Pixies are one of those bands that I should be liking, but I just don't.

...

Yeah, I had a feeling I'd get mostly excluded from my own thread pretty soon. So chew on some horrible pop solo acts:

John Mayer or Rob Thomas.

Posted by Hyper

ew, solo career of Rob Thomas = suck. John Mayer because he was on some guitar program and did a pretty good solo.

pass.

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Rammstein or Moonspell?

Posted by Gollum

Moonspell, no contest at all.

Nevermore or Symphony X?

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Symphony X, I love the orchestra mixed with metal. Nevermore is quite good in their own right, but no where near close to achieving the skill and likability of Symphony X.

(two different styles!)

Reveille or Oleander?

Posted by William

Oleander definitely. They used to be one of my favorite bands a few years ago anyhow.

Hmm...

Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd?

Posted by Acheron

Zeppelin, man. I mean, Pink Floyd is great, but some of the best classic rock of all time has come from Zeppelin. I enjoy Kashmir on in particular.

Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton?

EDIT: OMG COVERUP

Posted by Philsdad

Dream On was Aerosmith, not Led Zeppelin.

Jimi Hendrix. I have a bunch of old bootlegs of him and it's fun to listen to them once in awhile. Not a fan of clapton.

Nile vs Cannibal Corpse

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Cannibal Corpse, since them and Obituary got me into metal (before then it was all rap..... I know, I'm ashamed too). Nile isnt half bad though.

Throwdown or Lamb of ***?

Posted by Shin-Ra

I saw both of those guys in concert. I heard the last bit of Throwdown's set (I believe) and I was standing in line to get Death Cult Armageddon signed by Dimmu Borgir while Lamb of God was up. I remember that Lamb of God put on a better show, so they have my vote, though I'd never sit down and listen to them on my own.

Loreena McKennitt or Blackmore's Night?

Posted by Chronic

Blackmore's Night not a hard desicion on my part

Shadows Fall or Lamb of Go.d (without the period of course)

Posted by -Shadow-

Shadows Fall

Satyricon or Children of Bodom?

Posted by MetalVox~55

BODOM

Nightwish vs. Blind Guardian

Posted by Richaod

Nightwish, although I'm not really judging them on their power metal capabilities.

Mercyful Fate or Candlemass (sort of unrelated, but both really classic, overlooked 80's metal)?

Posted by Klarth

Candlemass.

Lumsk or Ensiferum?

Posted by Gollum

Lumsk. The one album I heard of theirs was pretty neat.

Devin Townsend or Strapping Young Lad?

Posted by coromoro

Devin Townsend. Strapping Young Lad is way too heavy. :(

Devin Townsend or Dream Theater?

Posted by Klarth

Ugh... Tough choice, actually. What little Devin Townsend I've heard has been ****ing amazing, but DT are my favourite band.

Ayreon or Arcturus?

Posted by Gollum

I'll say Arcturus, but that's because I haven't heard any Ayreon yet. I'm not a big fan of Arcturus either, however.

Green Carnation or Psychotic Waltz?

Posted by coromoro

I actually decided to download a couple of songs by Psychotic Waltz, and I must say I'm glad I did. These songs are great. However, Green Carnation takes the cake. I might change my mind after further listens, though.

Rhapsody or Blind Guardian? :o

Posted by Altinure

neither, lol!! metal sux

hot hot heat or the strokes?

Posted by G-Sides

TEH STROKEZ~~!!

Louis XIV or Kings Of Leon?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Kings Of leon just because...
Exodus or Testament?

Posted by G-Sides

Posted by MetalVox~55

Can't choose, cuz i don't know 'em

Eric Clapton or Eric Johnson

Posted by -Shadow-

Clapton

Tool or A Perfect Circle

Posted by Axis

Tool

Led Zeppelin or Van Halen.

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Zeppelin because I happen to listen to them more and they were my absolute favorite for the longest time.

(HeD) P.E. or Skindred?

Posted by Ch

Old Van halen

Cream or Rod Stewart(I hate him)

Posted by Chronic

Cream. Ive never heard of Cream but they have to be better than Rod Stewart.

Simple plan or Good Charllotte

Posted by Acheron

Simple Plan, as they try less to be bada[i][i]ss punks and just pretty much accept that they're lame.

Simon and Garfunkel or The Beatles?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Beatles. Duh

Steve Vai or Whitesnake (trick question ;) )

Posted by -Shadow-

Depends if I'm listning to Whitesnake when Vai was still playing for them.

Early Ozzy Osbourne or (really) early Quiet Riot

Posted by Velvet Nightmare

Ozzy, but only if he was still with Sabbath.

Metallica or Iron Maiden?

Posted by Altinure

iron maiden, i guess :(

back street boys or the spice girls?

Posted by MetalVox~55

N'Sync.

Demons & Wizards vs. Iced Earth

Posted by Corrupt

Iced Earth, because I've actually heard some of their stuff.

Infected Mushroom or Yahel?

Posted by Ch

I just downloaded a few songs from both but it goes to Infected Mushroom.

Santana or Billy Joel?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Santana

Arch Enemy vs. Soilwork

Posted by Sapphire Rose

****it, stop with the hard ones!
Arch Enemy.... BARELY. They're growl is cool and some of their lyrics are insane.

The Red Chord or Bloodbath?

Posted by Raptor

Never heard either and don't want to.

Air or Zero 7?

Posted by TheSecondComing

Never heard either and don't want to.

Metallica or Dream Theatre?

Posted by Corrupt

Quoting Raptor: Air or Zero 7?

Air, most definitely. I just had to respond to that one, really.

Anyway, Dream Theater, I guess... since I've actually heard some of their stuff and liked it. I don't obsess over it, though.

Rob Dougan or Hybrid?

Posted by netman

Rob Dougan. Furious Angels was good

Sharon, Lois, and Bram or Raffi?

Posted by Klarth

SHARON, LOIS AND BRAM
Furious Angels was good

clubbedtodeathwasbetter:-*

Hmm... Rush or Pink Floyd?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Psh....Rush? Duh?

Tool vs. A Perfect Circle

Posted by Ch

Tool

(Hehheh) Fleetwood Mack or Michael Jackson

Posted by Shade

Fleetwood Mac, easily. Thriller was pretty awesome though.

3 Doors Down or Autopilot Off?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

3 doors down
Savatage Vs. Children Of Bodom

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Children of Bodom. I've heard more of them.

Powerman 5000 or Rob Zombie?

Posted by Ch

Rob Zombie.

Jimi Hendrix or Grateful Dead?

Posted by Chronic

Jimi Hendrix (I thought his name was spelt with a "Y") cuz we have things in common.

36 Crazyfists or All That Remains

Posted by MetalVox~55

Dunno.

Me on guitar vs. FeionCaster on guitar

Posted by Klarth

feion because he wrote a song about vgc :(

steve vai or joe satriani.

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Both are really good...probably about even but i'll have to give this one to the Vaimaster.
Nevermore Vs. Helloween

Posted by Raptor

Nevermore is much more splendorous than Hello weenie.

Ferry Corsten or Armin van Buuren?

Posted by Corrupt

Raaaaagh, I honestly can't choose between the two. They're both so fantastic.

Dr. Reanimator or hAmMeRfAlL????

Posted by Raptor

Dr. Reanimator please.

Gary Numan or Tears for Fears?

Posted by Corrupt

Oooh, that's a toughie, but I'd have to say Tears for Fears. I listened to them a lot more when I was younger, and I got into Gary Numan years later.

Stone Temple Pilots or The Foo Fighters?

Posted by Ch

Stone temple Pilots, easily.

Creedence Clearwater Revival or Johnny Cash?

Posted by Pit

NEVER HEARD OF THEM!

Notorious B.I.G. (aka Biggie Smalls) or 2pac?

omg rap kuesshun of da century!

Posted by Ch

Biggie was better than Pac IMO

Cypruss Hill or De La soul?

Posted by Pit

Quoting User 245: Biggie was better than Pac IMO

HOW DARE YOU SIR. Although Big Poppa is good, Pac still has Changes. CHANGES.

Quoted post: Cypruss Hill or De La soul?

Never heard of De La soul but I've heard Cypress Hill, so yeah.

SUGARHILL GANG OR RUN DMC?

(SG = Masterminds behind Rappers Delight)

Posted by Ch

eh Changes was alright.

RUN DMC. Def.

N.W.A or Slick rick?

Posted by Pit

Quoting User 245: eh Changes was alright.

Okay, but Runnin' is a great song that has both Biggie and 2pac (thanks Eminem for the remix!)

Quoted post: RUN DMC. Def.

Agree with you there. The only good song that Sugarhill Gang has is Rappers Delight. Rappers Demise was meh, but RD is pretty much a song that will never get old. Something about it. Run DMC has more memorable songs though 8-)

I SHALL CHANGE IT, since 50 basically sucks. Eminem has had way better songs than him. Only thing 50 has had good imo is Hate it or Love it, which still fails in comparison to alot of Ems songs.

Metal time, or yeah:

Dragonforce or Kamelot?

Posted by Acheron

Kamelot. Dragonforce is one of the most irritating of the metal bands.

Aerosmith or AC/DC?

Posted by Ch

AC/DC

James Brown or Luther Vandross?

Posted by Acheron

Mr. Vandross. Brown is good and all, but his songs just get repetitive and tired after a while.

Modest Mouse or The Killers?

Posted by G-Sides

Modest Mouse. They've been around much longer and they're also much better.

White Stripes or Franz Ferdinand?

PS: I BET I BEAT METALVOX TO THE POST

Posted by Ch

White Stripes.

I think franz Ferdinand is ****.

Sublime or RHCP

Posted by Richaod

Quoting TheSecondComing: Never heard either and don't want to.

omg, you know of Air. But is it really worth it to spite Raptor? (yes)

I don't know of Sublime, so I'll have to go with Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't exactly like them much, apart from Give It Away.

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer or Anthrax? (the Big Four of thrash)

Posted by G-Sides

I like more songs from Metallica than from the rest of them, but that's the only reason I'm saying them.

Rage Against The Machine or Cypress Hill?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Definately Rage
Nonpoint vs. Rage Against The Machine

Posted by Azusa

Rage against the machine. Definately.

The Smashing Pumpkins or Queen?

Posted by Altinure

smashing pumpkins most def.

hanson singing "mmmbop" or janet jackson singing "doesn't really matter?"

lol, i'm glad i dont have that one because i love them both.

Posted by Wicked Sushi

I would say, Hanson singing "mmmbop".

Authority Zero or Green Day?

Posted by Raptor

Green Day, since a decade ago they were worth a da[i]mn and their band name doesn't scream out "look at me look at me imma REBEL GRRRUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGURGLEBLECH."

The Cure or INXS?

Posted by coromoro

The Cure, definitely.

Therion or Ayreon?

Posted by Richaod

Ayreon; I just can't stand Therion, for reasons which don't need to be posted here.

All serious black metal or Impaled Northern Moonforest (acoustic black metal parodies by the guy from Anal **** - try the song Lustfully Worshipping The Inverted Moongoat While Skiing Down The Inverted Mountain Of Necrodeathmortum)?

Posted by Klarth

Serious black metal since you're thick enough not to follow the thread rules.

Don Davis or Rob Dougan?

Posted by Acheron

Rob Dougan. Ooooooh boy, Rob Dougan.

M83 or Juno Reactor?

Posted by Klarth

Juno Reactor. What little Juno Reactor I've heard is absolutely stunning.

Finntroll or Falkenbach?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Dunno. Meh to both. Sorry Gar. :(

Trans-Siberian Orchestra vs. Metallica S&M

Posted by G-Sides

Metallica S&M :[

Death From Above 1979 or Middle Class?

Posted by TheSecondComing

DFA 1979. They're just so much rawkier.

Mozart or Beethoven?

Posted by Richaod

Quoting TheSecondComing: Mozart or Beethoven?

Probably Beethoven, although if I had to pick a classical composer, I'd go for either Bach or Brahms.

Okay, let's try again - Anal **** or Impaled Northern Moonforest?

Posted by Acheron

The second one. Dear lord is Anal **** not funny.

Vivaldi or Tchaikovsky?

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

Vivaldi for the four seasons.

Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam

Posted by Sapphire Rose

Alice in Chains because I've never heard a Pearl Jam song in my life.

Freya or Atreyu?

Posted by Gollum

Freya can't be any worse than Atreyu.

Tiamat or Tad Morose?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Tad Morose
Slayer Vs. Seplatora

Posted by Klarth

Slayer are less obnoxious by a degree.

Hmmm... Opeth or Bathory?

Posted by Porcupine

Wow. Jack came up with a good one.

Opeth, just barely.

Sonata Arctica or Stratovarius?

Posted by Klarth

Sonata Arctica. Stratovarius are far too... I don't know, happy?

Yes or Pink Floyd?

Posted by Chronic

Pink Floyd cuz I never heard of yes.

Dimmu Borgir or Mastadon

Posted by Crazy_K

Umm, john cena or iron maiden, this one is easy lol

Posted by Axis

Iron Maiden

Pantera or Slayer?

Posted by Ch

Pantera

Van Halen or Whitesnake?

Posted by Richaod

I really need to listen to some Whitesnake... I'll have to go with Van Halen though, Eruption is 1337.

Dio-era Black Sabbath, Dio or Ozzy Osbourne?

Posted by -Shadow-

Ozzy Osbourne

Opeth or OTEP

Posted by Richaod

Who are OTEP? Opeth are probably better anyway.

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci (solo album) or Yngwie Malmsteen?

Posted by Klarth

Vai doesn't interest me much.
Never heard anything by Johnson.
Haven't heard Suspended Animation.
Malmsteen isn't my sort of thing.

Satriani it is.

Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden?

Posted by Richaod

Maiden.

In Flames, Dark Tranquillity or Children Of Bodom?

Posted by Ch

Children of Bodom

Sammy Davis Jr or Frank Sinatra?

Posted by TheSecondComing

[QUOTE=Ch

Posted by NegativeTrend

Definately with.
Yes or Camel?

Posted by Commissar Vader

umm... is that a trick kwestion? I dunno, maybe Camel.

Posted by Richaod

omg teh darth vader can't think of a song!11!one

John Williams or whoever scored The Lord Of The Rings (it better not be John Williams too)?

Posted by Klarth

Williams, for the Star Wars music.

Six Magics or Rhapsody?

Posted by Velvet Nightmare

Rhapsody is more my style.

Gorgoroth or Messhuguh?

Posted by Shin-Ra

Gorgoroth (pre-Gaahl). Congratulations on entirely butchering the name Meshuggah, that must have been quite a challenge.

Spice Girls or Destiny's Child?

Posted by Klarth

Spice Girls. Destiny's Child are plainly awful and simply want to attain the glory that Posh and the rest once held.

Wintersun or Ensiferum?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Wintersun
Celtic Frost Vs. Iced Earth

Posted by Richaod

Iced Earth, even though I've only heard one song of theirs, Celtic Frost completely stumps me. Circle Of The Tyrants is okay, but they seem really weird, especially Mexican Radio.

Carcass or Arch Enemy? I'm going for the former, but whatever...

Posted by Gollum

I've never heard either of their music, but I got sick of not being able to respond so I'm going to anyway.

Candlemass or Moonspell?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Candlemass
Pantera Vs. Metallica Vs. Testament

Posted by Chronic

Pantera there just more my style

The Agony Scene or Soulfly

Posted by G-Sides

Haha, I have no clue who The Agony Scene is but they're probably better than Soulfly.

Nargaroth or Gorgoroth?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Nargaroth, I dont like either of them much though
Slipknot vs. Mudvayne, battle of the crappy nu-metal!

Posted by Acheron

Mudvayne. "A World So Cold" is tolerable.

Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye?

Posted by Fei-on Castor

Marvin Gaye. Sexual Healing is an awesome "mood" song, if you know what I mean.

"Weird Al" Yankovic or Cletus T. Judd (no relation)?

Posted by Chronic

Weird al because I have his cd "off the deep end"

Megadeth or Iron Maiden

Posted by Corrupt

Iron Maiden, because their songs sped up sound hilarious.

Paul Van Dyk or Blank & Jones?

Posted by Raptor

Blank & Jones, if only because I'm familiar with more of their material.

Oceanlab or Solar Stone?

Posted by Corrupt

Oh man, that's a tough choice. In the end I'd have to say Solar Stone though, because I've heard more of their stuff; exactly the same reason why you chose Blank & Jones. And let me throw out the names of two artists that people might be more familiar with...

Smashing Pumpkins or Bush?

Posted by TheSecondComing

Smashing Pumpkins by a mile. A MILE I SAY. Bush are too, how should I put it... bad?

Nirvana or Franz Ferdinand?

Posted by Richaod

Nirvana seemed to achieve something, however simple and overrated. Take Me Out is decent for a mainstream rock song, but I don't really like it past the intro; it's a bit cliche, especially that high guitar part.

****ation-era Opeth (well, including their other acoustic songs like Benighted, Harvest and To Bid You Farewell) or Judgement-onwards Anathema?

Posted by Shin-Ra

I love acoustic Opeth, but I feel Judgement-era to present day Anathema is better by leaps and bounds. If this was over Deathier Opeth and Anathema when they were Doom, then Opeth would easily win that one.

Gah, I dislike deciding on two bands because I don't know what all everyone's heard. To make it easy, Dimmu Borgir or Emperor? Both keyboard laden meloblack metal bands that became very accessible and popular bands (for this music) as time went on. Both are also severely criticized by fans of the genre (except early Emperor, in general).

Posted by Shin_Akuma

I'd say Emperor, thought I dont like the cookie monster type vocals for either of them.

Yngwie Malmsteem vs. Jason Becker *if you've never heard becker dont reply*

Posted by MetalVox~55

Becker. Much more awesomeness.

Megadeth vs. Pantera

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Thats a pretty hard one, but i'd say Megadeth for pure originality and awesome songwriting. I'd say Dimebag and Mustaine are pretty even guitar wise though.

Helloween vs. Ironmaiden

Posted by Velvet Nightmare

Iron Maiden, no contest.

Gackt or Malice Mizer (sort of a trick question.)?

Posted by auzzman5151

Dredg or Stereophonics?

Posted by Ch

none

Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd?

Posted by TheSecondComing

Come on, dude. Pink Floyd all the way.

Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin?

Posted by Raptor

Pink Floyd by a long, long, long shot. I really don't like Led Zeppelin at all.

Fastball or Ben Folds Five?

Posted by Acheron

Ben Folds. He's got a nice, pleasant quality about him.

The White Stripes (Jack White) or Tenacious D (Jack Black)?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Tenacious D
Marty Friedmans solowork vs. Jason Beckers solowork

Posted by MetalVox~55

Beckers.

Vai & Satch vs. Petrucci & Rudess

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Petrucci and Rudess
Yngwie Malmsteem vs. Theodore Zirus

Posted by Velvet Nightmare

I don't really recall much by either, but because Yngwie Malmsteem sounds familliar, that will be my choice.

Jack Johnson or John Mayer?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Quoting Velvet Nightmare: I don't really recall much by either, but because Yngwie Malmsteem sounds familliar, that will be my choice.

Zarias!!!!!!!!!!

HI I DON'T PLAY THE GAME RIGHT :link:

Guns n Roses or Velvet Revolver?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Guns N Roses, easily..even if Axl Rose is a douche.
drumming contest
Buddy Rich vs. Mike Portnoy

Posted by Gollum

I've listened to both, but I prefer Portnoy.

Sepultura or Slayer?

Posted by Acheron

Sepultura. I really enjoy Apocalyptica's renditions of their stuff, and the originals aren't all that bad either.

Therion or Arcturus?

Posted by G-Sides

Therion. \m/

AC/DC or Def Leppard?

Posted by Gollum

Def Leppard. They have a couple good songs. I don't like AC/DC at all.

Porcupine Tree or Pagan's Mind?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Porcupine Tree, cuz i love Porcupines. I haven't heard either.

Miles Davis or B. B. King

Posted by Velvet Nightmare

BB King by far, I just <3 his bluesy style.

As I Lay Dying or The Black Dahlia Murder?

Posted by Altinure

as i lay dying because i've never heard of the other one, lol!

bloc party or mando diao?

Posted by G-Sides

Bloc Party,

Quoting Altinure: because i've never heard of the other one, lol!

Sepultura or Pro-Pain?

Posted by Richaod

Not Sepultura. I've heard Chaos A.D. and Nation and only liked Refuse/Resist between the whole two albums (although I didn't expect much of Nation).

Cannibal Corpse or Dream Theater (I want to see if anyone will pick the former)?

Posted by Corrupt

Quoting Richaod: Cannibal Corpse or Dream Theater (I want to see if anyone will pick the former)?

Heh, not here... I choose Dream Theater. I mean, I'm not too big of a fan of DT, but a few of their instrumentals have been great listens... particularly "Overture 1928."

Neuroticfish or Razed in Black? (yes, I realize that probably very few people here know about either, but just pretend that you do or something)

Posted by Raptor

I would have to go with Razed in Black. Though I have listened to a few good Neuroticfish songs, none of them have grabbed me as much as, say, the DJ RiB trance remix of "Oh My Goth!," "Blush," or "Share The Poison." Also, though their musical style can be compared to that of Nine Inch Nails, I must say I much prefer Romell Regulacion's voice to that of Trent Reznor's. That and the fact that he's from Hawaii scores brownie points with me.

Icehouse or The Human League?

Posted by Ch

Human League.

Rick James or George Clinton?

Posted by Richaod

Rick James, because he's nearly amusing.

Strapping Young Lad or Nine Inch Nails?

Posted by Acheron

Nine Inch Nails by a long shot. Say what you will about With_Teeth, but The Fragile was a masterpiece, plain and simple.

Dream Theater or The Dillinger Escape Plan?

COME ON PEOPLE, THERE'S A VERY EASY ANSWER TO THIS ONE.

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Dream Theater.
Nevermore Vs. Pantera

Posted by Shin-Ra

Nevermore. They're actually good.

Katatonia, Anathema, Estatic Fear, or My Dying Bride? (saddest battle ever)

Posted by G-Sides

Estatic Fear, mainly because they're the one I know. :(

Death From Above 1979 or The White Stripes?

Posted by Acheron

Death From Above, by a hojillion billion FURLONGS. The only song of The White Stripes that I really like is the one involving doorbells.

Gang of Four or The Velvet Underground?

Posted by auzzman5151

Velvet Underground

Coldplay or U2

Posted by MetalVox~55

U2.

I love Bono's glasses.

Lestat playing Piano in "Interview with the Vampire"

or

Lestat singing in "Queen of the Da mned"

Loophole!

Posted by Richaod

I know not. Linkin Park's Chester Bennington did an industrial song for Queen of the ****ed, and it was horrible even by my standards when I first heard it.

Velvet Revolver or Alter Bridge? (random)

Posted by Ch

Velvet Revolver.

Alice in Chains or Stone Temple Pilots?

Posted by Richaod

I'm not too fond of Stone Temple Pilots, and I think I've heard only one Alice In Chains song.

Black Sabbath or Judas Priest? (I really didn't like British Steel at all, sounded like bored-to-death AC/DC)

Posted by Ch

Sabbath by far.

Cake or Sublime?

Posted by MetalVox~55

Sublime.

Bob Marley vs. Robert Randolph and the Family Band

Posted by auzzman5151

Bob Marely

Danzig or Motorhead

Posted by Richaod

I've listened to very little of either. I've heard "Twist Of Cain" by Danzig, which I really didn't like at all, and part of his Black Aria album, which seems okay but certainly doesn't sum up his music. I've heard only Ace Of Spades by Motorhead, which is decent, but I'm not too fond of Lemmy's vocals. I'll say Motorhead though.

Led Zeppelin or Cream?

Posted by G-Sides

Zeppelin. I haven't heard too much Cream.

BASSIST DUEL:

Les Claypool (Primus) or Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)?

Posted by Ch

Les Claypool is pretty good. He has a one-stringed bass that looks and lights up like a lightsaber! but my vote goes for Flea. I love the bass lines and I mean the guy plays live in his underwear. Thats a lil' ballsy.

Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin?

Posted by Hyper

Black Sabbath.

Queensryche or Rush?

Posted by Ch

Rush

Van Halen or Def Leppard?

Posted by Shin_Akuma

Van Halen
Sinergy vs. Testament

Acht hard choice. I've heard little of either, but Symphony X seem the way to go because everyone thinks that bodom are death metal and i dislike stupid people!

Wutfux can't find anything about "Strange Hobby" so I just say Spock's Bear by default because The Light kicks ***.
Uriah Heep or Deep Purple?

That's a hard one, but I'm going with Deep Purple on this one. Their Machine Head album is classic, and although Uriah Heep is a fantastic and influential band, Deep Purple wins for this one.

Meshuggah play 8-strings.

And I'd pick Ice Cube (or Ice T, can't remember who's who but the white one), because he was in a Six Feet Under song and it was funny as hell - and very sad.

And by the way, Shin-Ra, a lot of people aside from Shin_Akuma have skipped previous questions...

Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes or Genesis?

Pink Floyd. They're probably the only good progressive rock band ever.

Michael Jackson or Madonna? And I dare you to answer this without a pedophile joke.

Jackson can (could?) dance.

Ensiferum or Falkenbach?

Quoting Richaod: Meshuggah play 8-strings.

Yes, but before they got their 8-stringers, the used Ibanez Universes. Then they got their own 7's made, and eventually got a company to make them their 8's.

Falkenbach.

I never cared for Sevendust and I used to listen to Coal Chamber about 6 years ago, so Coal Chamber wins. Plus, I saw DevilDriver (them and CC have the same singer for those who don't know) in concert last year and the vocalist had a lot of charisma.

Posted by Richaod

The Misfits, because Glenn Danzig was the frontman. And because I really have no idea if A.F.I. are punk or nu-metal (and their album covers suck).

Here's one for the Dream Theater enthusiasts; Liquid Tension Experiment, The Jelly Jam, Platypus, Chroma Key, O.S.I., John Petrucci or Jordan Rudess? There are more, I know.

Liquid Tension Experiment. More varied than John Petrucci's solo album, and more material.

The only full Satriani album I've got is Engines Of Creation, which is really mediocre (too electronic), and I'm trying to get Surfing With The Alien. I do have some G3 stuff but they're practically even when judged upon that basis.

I think it says something about this Petrucci guy that I've never heard any of his music, and never heard his praises sung anywhere but here.

Posted by Fei-on Castor

Hendrix was good, but there are about a few hundred thousand guitarists that could match his skill. His fame was based more on his stage presence than his actual skill. He'd be up there, lighting his guitar on fire and all that.

And another thing, why do people make such a big deal about him playing the guitar backwards? It's not that cool. If I learned that way, I could do it too. I'll bet that I could waste him if we were both playing our guitars the right way, since he wasn't used to playing that way (same goes for Kurt F*cking Cobain, but that's another story).

In my personal opinion, Phil Keaggy is the most proficient guitarist around. Incidently, Jimi Hendrix said so as well, as did Eddie Van Halen (that Keaggy is the best).

Posted by loathing

I think the fact that Hendrix revolutionized the electric guitar should be taken into consideration here people.

Posted by Fei-on Castor

Quoting loathing: I think the fact that Hendrix revolutionized the electric guitar should be taken into consideration here people.

Um, not really. People were playing the electric guitar long before Hendrix. Bill Hailey and the Comets did "Rock Around the Clock" in 1954, and that had a guitar solo. Without such songs, Hendrix may never have had the inspiration to play rock'n'roll music at all.

Besides, the question at hand isn't about who was more innovative or revolutionary, because Hendrix is definitely the answer to that one. But the question we're talking about is who was a more proficient guitarist, and not who was more willing to light their guitar on fire.

Posted by Axis

IMO, Hendrix is better. And yeah, I agree with NegativeTrend.

Okay, again, the question is not "Who was more influential?" or "Who was more inspiring?", but the question is "Who is/was more proficient with a guitar?".

So far, everyone is just saying he was innovative, revolutionary, influential and inspiring. Not good at playing the d*mn thing, though.

And to those voting "Hendrix", have you ever even heard Petrucci play?

As well, metal didn't come about until after Hendrix's death. The earliest metal came in the form of Motorhead and perhaps Black Sabbath.

Posted by NegativeTrend

Quoting Fei-on: And to those voting "Hendrix", have you ever even heard Petrucci play?

Yes. Looks like someone is forgetting Deep Purple and Uriah Heep as well, metal before his death.

Posted by Skitzo Control

The biggest problem with everybody voting is that they're taking into consideration that Petrucci is the guitarist for their favorite band, not that he's a good guitarist. Sure, he's good, but he's obviously nothing compared to Hendrix. The only reasons people are even voting for Petrucci is because he's the obvious underdog (us silly Americans, we love the underdogs!), and because he's the member of their favorite band, as I stated before. I could replace Hendrix with Randy Rhoads, and there'd still be people voting for him, even if he clearly wasn't the superior guitarist.

No, actually, I don't care what band Petrucci is/was in. The majority of people voting for Hendrix merely vote for him because he's the obvious right answer, or so says the general public. Hendrix was made famous because of drugs and people that use a substantial amount of them, and the crazy ways he did them.

I truthfully don't think Petrucci is the best, either. I've already stated that I think Phil Keaggy is the best, and Jimi Hendrix said so as well. As did Eddie Van Halen. Hendrix and Van Halen, two people who are often called the best guitarists ever, both think Keaggy is better than they are.

Hendrix is the more recognizable name between he and Petrucci, so people are like, "OMG JIMI HENDRIX IS AWESOME CUZ HE PLAYED PURPLE HAZE AND STAR SPANGLED BANNER AND ALL ALONG TEH WATCHTOWER" and that's it. Seriously, everytime someone asks me if I can play any Hendrix, they're always assuming he's the best, and it's usually because they're not even musicians so they don't realize that he never actually does anything particularly tricky, or at least, I've never heard him. If anyone can think of a Hendrix tune that is exceptionally hard to play, let me know so I can hear it. I've only heard a few of Hendrix's most popular songs, and there's absolutely nothing to them. I can play them in their entirity with no trouble at all. I can't say the same for even Metallica songs with solos by Kirk Hammet. Even a lot of Metallica rythyms are tougher than most Hendrix songs, including solos.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people haven't even heard of Petrucci, but EVERYONE knows who Jimi Hendrix is. So they'd come here, with no knowledge of the guitar, and vote for him just because they know who he is and that he's supposedly the best, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not discrediting Hendrix in anyway. The man was a visionary who changed music forever. But that would've happened even if the guy was a bassist or a drummer. It wasn't his guitar that changed things, it was him, as a person. His stage presence, his antics, his bizzare personality and obscure lyrics. Sure, his guitarwork added to it, but it wasn't the core of it. There are artists/bands who are much more well known (in the guitar community) for their skills than Hendrix. Anyone who is an accomplished guitarist, well, almost anyone, can tell you that Hendrix was good, but not at all the best. Not even close.

It's just too "trendy" to say that Hendrix is the best, so everyone assumes it's true, without even looking into other guitarists (such as Keaggy, whom Hendrix himself has stated was a better guitarist). It's common knowledge that Hendrix is the best, just like it was once common knowledge that the Earth was flat. Just because 90% of the people say he's the best doesn't make it so.
Skill does not begat good guitar playing.
I gauge a guitarist's skill on their ability to play the guitar, therefore, in my estimation, skill does beget good guitar playing. You may measure their skill in a different manner, but if someone asks me if a person can play guitar well, I'll define it in terms of skill. Hendrix was more creative, I'll give him that. He was better at producing sounds from his guitar that didn't even resemble music. He could do that better than anyone else. But if we're talking playing the guitar in a way that you actually hear music, and not feedback and screeching, well, Hendrix can't measure up to other names.
Yes. Looks like someone is forgetting Deep Purple and Uriah Heep as well, metal before his death.
I've never heard of Uriah Heep. But play some Deep Purple, then play some Metallica (Ride the Lightning), and then tell me they're the same genre. I'd argue that Sabbath isn't really even "metal", but then you'd all jump down my throat about how it is, so I'll leave it alone.

Posted by Hyper

Hendrix is good, but Petrucci has more skill, which is quite evident. I liked Petrucci before I liked Dream Theater. Ask Sabredog, I wrote up a report on him for guitar class about a month before hearing any Dream Theater material. =)

I don't care who's more famous, who did the most drugs, or who revolutionized anything the most. Saying that Hendrix had more fans is about as good as an argument as would be me saying that Petrucci is in Dream Theater and therefore wins. The fact of the matter is that John Petrucci could and would outplay Hendrix, hands down.

Pretty much. John Petrucci obviously has more talent, although Hendrix certainly could've built on his if he had lived longer.

If John Petrucci was born in 1940, I'm sure he would've been an even more influential player than Hendrix was, and he probably wouldn't have died of a drug overdose either.

Also, skill is good guitar playing. If Teh Hammer had asked "Who is a more influential guitarist?", Hendrix would obviously win that one. But anyway, listen to Stream of Consciousness or Erotomania and then tell me that Jimi Hendrix could've played any of those solos.

As a guitarist myself, Little Wing is one of the most difficult songs I've come across; it's not too hard to actually play, but to play it in the right time and getting the right sound is a different story. There is no way a few hundred thousand people can play Little Wing as well as he can, let alone time, after time. And I won't even get into how difficult it can be to sing and play Purple Haze or All Along The Watchtower.

And they don't play "backwards", they play left-handed. There's nothing backwards about it, aside from it being strung in the opposite direction so that it can be played left-handed. The big deal is, Hendrix learned right handed and after a few months decided "this doesn't feel right". He restrung the guitar and taught himself to play left handed instead- which is no simple feat.

In Kurt Cobain's case, he was a right handed individual. He was too poor to afford new strings, so he made due with it being strung left handed. It requires serious devotion to learn to do something like that when it isn't your dominant hand.

Petrucci has more ability than Hendrix had, so voted Petrucci. Suffice to say, Hendrix, by a mile, in every possible way, in every possible part of being a guitarist at all, including skill. Every ridiculous hyperbole you have ever heard about him barely scratches the surface of that mans incredible talent. Everyone who said Petrucci is quite frankly wrong.

I can't be bothered quoting from the hordes of idiots I disagree with, so the serious ones can quote me and start a serious argument.

This thread has made me angry, so let me just say that I am the Lord Jesus Christ and I'm gonna go get drunk and beat up some midgets.
Every ridiculous hyperbole you have ever heard about him barely scratches the surface of that mans incredible talent. And you're telling us that -we're- stupid? You just totally contradicted yourself. If it barely scratches the surface, then it's not ridiculous hyperbole.

Yes, we get the idea, you like Hendrix. And, I can absolutely understand why someone wouldn't like Petrucci's playing - many of his more complex guitar solos just aren't everyone's piece of cake. I've heard many Petrucci solos that just don't have the same feeling of pure emotion as Hendrix's. But, throwing bias out the window, you can't really make much of an argument for Hendrix when putting him against Petrucci ability-wise, and it doesn't look to me like you're about to. A statement that basically translates to "when people exaggerate about Hendrix, they're actually understating!" doesn't give me the impression it's going to be succeeded by a number of balanced arguments, especially not in a post coated with "man, you guys are stupid omg so stupid stop being stupid. :(" It just sounds to me, in all honesty, like you're being irrational because people said a guitarist you don't like is better than a guitarist you like.

I think you're forgetting how many people actually live in the world. In the spectrum of 6 billion, a number like 200,000 isn't a whole lot. But you're right, it's probably an exaggeration.

Regarding Little Wing, I can play that song. I may not play it exactly like you hear in the recording, but I doubt Hendrix himself played it the exact same every time. Chances are, the only time he played it just like that was when it was recorded, that time. As well, I can't play it like him because I play a Squire Stratocaster (a crappy, lame, cheap guitar) and I have crappy lame cheap equipment to amplify it, so the tone never sounds quite right.

And regarding Cobain, I was under the impression that he played lefty, but with a guitar strung and set up for a standard righty. Like, he took a normal guitar, and just flipped it over. And he was "self-taught", which isn't that big of a deal. I'm self-taught, too. Of course, I've had a few peoplel give me tips over the years, but I can honestly say that I've never sat down and taken a guitar lesson. Likewise for my brother Joe, who is the best guitarist that I actually know (excluding famous guys like Keaggy). I could comfortably say that Joe is better is than Hendrix because I've heard him play all of Hendrix's stuff, including Vodoo Child, Little Wing, All Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze, etc... He can play them virtually exactly as they're recorded, something Hendrix probably couldn't do.

That statement is just plain idiotic. The whole reason Hendrix was great was because he could play every song he recorded perfectly when he played live, and as a rule of thumb even better because he was given more room to play. I've seen three live DVDs of him and he never messed up a note, and the guitar playing was vastly improved from the studio recordings. I've seen Petrucci playing live (admittedly brief clips) and he was clinically hitting every note as it was in the studio recording - I mean, yeah, okay, good job, but what's the skill in writing a song which you can play and then playing it again and again?

Stating that my brother's ability to play the guitar as well as Hendrix because he can mimic everything that Hendrix plays, to the note, is just plain idiotic?

The bold truth is that Hendrix wasn't that skillful. He was merely a crazy pioneer type. Not skillful. I'd venture to say there are many, many people who could match and surpass Hendrix, Petrucci being one of them, along with Keaggy, and I'm sure a lot of people of whom we haven't heard.

But could any of those people be as bold and innovative as Hendrix? No, they couldn't because that's where Hendrix's genius lied. In his innovation, not his musical skill. Every jazzy guitarist of that day was playing stuff just like what Hendrix played, but no one cared about them. Even today, there are people that can outplay Hendrix that are stuck in coffeehouses and bars because there's just not enough room for more guitar virtuosos right now.

Hendrix had an umatched stage presence. I'll give him that, because if I didn't, I'd be lying. But his guitar skills just aren't on par with a lot of other, underrated guitarists.

If you haven't tried to learn any DT songs, than how do you know if they're hard or not?

Quoting Creature: Hey guitarist too, and I know all that Petrucci does, its just finger tapping and thats why it sounds so hard and fast.

That statement is outrageous! Petrucci doesn't "just" tap!

When was the last time you heard Angus Young or Jimmy Page do an Arpeggio Sweep, Legato the Whole-Tone Scale, or do 32nd or 64th notes?

Posted by Creature

Angus does a lot pentatonic scales and bends and basic guitar stuff while playing in 32nd notes. Jimmy Paige while playing the stairway solo is going ten nots a second. LETS SEE PETRUCCI DO THAT.

Randy Rhoades does everything you said that Petrucci could do.

....please...don't make me laugh harder than I have already...my eyes can't make any more tears.

christ...-I- can do pentatonics in 32nd notes...pentatonic scales are the easiest ****ing scales to do! My *** you've got your sights set low.

And Jimmy Page's solos have nothing on Petrucci. A good example is Petrucci's "Bite of the Mosquito." If Mr. Page can do that song, then i'll share your viewpoint.

Posted by Shade

The man asked you a question, Creaure. And didn't hear you answer it. OR MAYBE YOU CAN'T.

I've never heard them do any of that, but I have seen Jimmy Paige play on a double neck guitar, can Petrucci play on that.

Santana.

My Chemical Romance or Fallout Boy?

you go to hell either way :(

Feion Castor vs. Metalvox *oscar*

Quoting MetalVox~55: Why are you so ****in' hooked on Stream of Consciousness? It's a good song, but it's not their best...

I'm not saying it's Dream Theater's best either, but haven't you yourself acknowledged that it's John Petrucci's most difficult solo?

Um, MetalVox probably. Feion seems a bit overly acoustic-oriented (correct me if I'm wrong though).

Arch Enemy or Dark Tranquillity?

Posted by Hyper

Quoting Richaod: I'm not saying it's Dream Theater's best either, but haven't you yourself acknowledged that it's John Petrucci's most difficult solo?

I have the DVD already (whoo to China). It's seriously insane, I mean, he actually has to reposition the pick midway through the solo. I'm surprised that he doesn't wear his guitar higher up on the strap though; the trend seems to be that musicians or virtually anyone with talent wears their guitar up really high (I wear mine, like, Tom Morello high).

Anyway, same question. Arch Enemy or Dark Tranquillity?

If you have the Budokan DVD, then you probably have the one with the bonus features as well. Check out Petrucci's Guitar World section, he says something like "I wear my guitar too high to be cool anyway"

I actually don't have the bonus features, unfortunately.

MY QUESTION STILL STANDS.

It isn't his hardest. IMO, that title goes to "Never Enough" with the pulloff/sweep part.

And Arch Enemy x200000

Angus plays just as fast as that, but in the middle of the neck and not on the bottom. Also, that's just as fast as the Stairway solo that Jimmy Paige plays.

In wearing guitar straps there's a choice - you're either in the 'look at me, I'm a real guitarist, what I'm playing is really hard so I need my strap up high because of my righteous talent' group, or 'i'll take comfort over wanking thanks' group.

Or you could be like the guy from the Strokes, in the 'maybe I'll look cool if I wear the strap high!' camp.

I'll vote Evergrey without even having heard them, because Blind Guardian are power metal and I don't like power metal. :( (horrible, horrible drumming and cheese fillings)

G3 versus, um, Iron Maiden, because they have three guitarists.

G3. Vai and Petrucci win it, even though Satriani is still awesome.

Les Paul or B.B. King?

The correct anwser to this is Yngwie Malmsteen's Far Beyond the Sun.

I don't mind his vocals; he sings very fittingly on the song Black Sabbath, which is so simple and good that it's mind-blowing. Zakk Wylde does a good job imitating Ozzy too. :p

And sorry to have to skip your question Shin_Akuma, but...

Carcass vs. Arch Enemy (again). I'm obviously referring to Heartwork-era Carcass as opposed to surgical terminology Carcass.

Posted by MetalVox~55

Arch Enemy. Flat out, one of the best metal bands out there today.

Posted by Richaod

Napalm Death vs. Killswitch Engage, lol.

I like Twist The Knife (Slowly) by Napalm Death, but Scum is possibly the single worst album I've ever heard. At best, it's random riffs strung together, at worst, inaudible guitars, really annoying, out-of-time blast beast and absolutely random "blah, blah, bleh" vocals. Barney Greenway sounds absolutely horrible on their later albums, too.

Posted by Klarth

uh? I say Napalm Death. I haven't listened to either band, but Greenway did a live cover of Damage Inc. with DT at the uncovered show.
