Roms.

I've been thinking about this for a few days now.

I think that the rules ought to be adjusted a bit. Right now I understand that the policy on roms for any system is "nooo!". I actually think that VGC'd be a better place if we were allowed to discuss (and link to) roms for old systems that games are no longer produced for (N64 and back), while still barring things like playstation ISOs.

Oh, and I've just noticed how odd this thread is. I think it's the only topic in the mod board lately that isn't related to another member in any way. Well, that's what happens when you're out of the loop.

Hmm, sounds like a good idea. The only problem with it is that allowing such links and whatnot would bring a bad crowd to VGC. That's the only issue I would have with it. But it's kinda hypocritical of me or other mods that use roms to say "NO TALK ABOUT TEH EVIL ROMS HERE"

Bah, SNES as well as GBA roms would be fine.

But games are still being produced for the GBA, which makes it a current system. I'm talking about now-obsolete platforms (ie, the nintendo 64 backwards). Playstation, PS2, GCN, Xbox, PSP, GBA and DS are no-nos.

Do your homework first.

Copyright doesn't die when the game stops being sold. You got 55-65 years before the NES games enter the public domain. 75 years from when the game was released.

You can probably talk about them as long as there are no links.

Yes. Personal Websites and/or Internet Content Providers sites That link to Nintendo ROMs, Nintendo emulators and/or illegal copying devices can be held liable for copyright and trademark violations, regardless of whether the illegal software and/or devices are on their site or whether they are linking to the sites where the illegal items are found.

Well, as long as there aren't any direct links to the rom it wouldn't be breaking the law. Perhaps to sites that actually carried the roms. And/or to the page where you could download the rom itself. What's wrong with that now? ;)

I like it when I don't have to dig up all the "VGC will get sued" info myself.

So, yeah, a big fat NO. Plus, if you really like ROMs, you'd keep the sites as far away from public websites as possible. The last thing you want is have a direct link to an illegal site in a videogames forum. That's like shouting, "HEY, NINTENDO! WE ARE BREAKING THE LAW OVER HERE! SHUT THIS WEBSITE DOWN NOW KTHX" Not to mention that Nintendo surely pays some people whose only job is to search for content like that, just as they have with porn sites with Nintendo characters in them.
