well it depends on what the problem may be, it could be that your discs are scratched up or you might need to buy a new PS2 if this problem continues. thats all i can say cause if its reading PS2 discs i can elimenate one thing that your disc reader is damaged. Thats all i can think of
hymmm its not my discs i know i keep good care of them it reads all ps2 discs and i get disc read error with ps1 games so i dunno i just gunna use an emu for ps1 games heh thnx, if ne1 else know ne thing dont hesitate to say it.....

I had the same problem with my ps2. Is your's a new ps2? Not the slim one, but how long did you buy it after the ps2 came out?
uhhh i cant really remember i think its about a few years old i think it 4 years atleast 3 years old, and i think it stopped playing the ps1 games and dvds around jan 2005
You may be having firmware problems, but more than likely the problem is a bad lense on your disc reader. So you are pretty much screwed unless you get a new PS2.
Just replace the lens. It's about twenty dollars on Ebay, and extremely simple to do.
There could be dust on the lense. I've heard you can open it up rather easily to blow dust off. I think this may void your warranty though. You'll have to find out.
I fixed my PS2 when I had the disc read error. All I had to was break through the warranty seal and take off the disc top inside, then I used a cotton swab on my lens and it worked like new.
