Old RPGs versus New RPGs

Posted by Xenos

Which RPG of which ages do you perfer? I'm not too sure how to draw the line, I suppose with the PSII.

For me, I perfer the simple old SNES--I can't really say why. Most of the games were just simply and easy interface. It was all "go-go-go." Despite that graphics are laughable compared to the monster games we have today, I think it was the simplicity, but not being butt ugly that attracted to me to it. I suppose I'd say old school RPGs, seeing that all of my favorite games were pre-PSII. *oscar*

Like Xenos said before me, I much rather preferr the "older" Pre-PS2 RPGs, specifically the ones on the SNES.

Yeah, the SNES had its share of crappy RPGs but it was also the system that held a countless number of extremely great RPGs that didnt take 4 and a half days to complete. It had a few really extensive ones, like Final Fantasy 4,5 & 6 and Chrono Trigger, and it had a few smaller known, "short" rpgs, like Terranigma. Heck, the few SNES RPGs that place so much strain on the SNESs hardware were great enough that if you put them on the PS1, they wouldnt be any different what-so-ever, one that comes to mind like this is Star Ocean.

PS1 had a good amount of good RPGs also, like FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, and a few others, but the amount of decent ones was small in comparison with the SNESs Garage of Greatness. *oscar*

It all really depends on the game, although for the most part, the older games are more suited to actually be called decent RPG's. I never owned an SNES, so I didn't ever get a chance to play all of these grand games. But that's what emulators are for, and I intend on playing at least a few of the hyped games eventually. Surprisingly enough, there have been some great RPG's for PC, mainly the Baldur's Gate series and similar games produced by Bioware/Black Isle branch. They're actually some of the few games I play on the computer, as I enjoy playing on a system much more. But the PS2 has a few good RPG titles, with the PS1 having even more.

I prefer computer RPGs. The time period really doesn't matter.

Posted by Vampire Slayer

Pre-PS2. I don't know why it just seems that know all the developers care about is that the game looks good. They have stopped caring about storyline and how much fun it was to play RPGs. A perfect example is Final Fantasy X-2. The game looked good, but the story was a quick throw togather failure.

The SNES age had some of the greatest RPGs I've ever played. Chrono Trigger was the first game to have ever nailed time travel almost as well as Back to the Future for the NES. FFVI/III was probably the most cinematic game of it's time. Kefka's Final Form could destroy Sephiroth!

I prefer the old rpgs because the storys were much better and the games werent so worried about the graphics and more on the story.

For me, the old NES RPGs were a great starting point. Dragon Warrior was my first. To this day, I'd still probably enjoy playing it....to a point. It seems that as I have grown and matured, so has the genre. There is so much more content, better graphics, and waaay more options. I think it all depends on the age/mentality of the person playing as to which is better for them.

[quote=Emeril]BAM!!!
Well said, Opeth.

Even so, Acheron used to say something that made a lot of sense to me, and I've since expanded the theory.

Squaresoft was a company that prided itself in excellent games.

Till FF7.

FF7 is arguably the best game ever made. It was a major turning point for the series, because even though the previous entries were popular, 7 took it to a whole new level.

But then the good folks at Square realized that they could sell games without much effort; by putting emphasis on graphics. You see, any schmuck with a degree from DeVry can create a good CGI. But to make a good story/gameplay, you need a mind. You need to be a genius to come up with a gameplay system that will be addictive and fun. You don't need to be a genius to create good graphics. Hell, "Britney's Dance Beat" has good graphics, for Chrissake.

So the moral of the story is:

graphics = cheap, and sells the game
gameplay/story = time-consuming, difficult, and sells less copies than graphics (today).

And FF7 is what made Square realize this.

I'd have to say the old Pre-PsII Rpgs on the snes and other systems like NEs and Genesis. Like alot of people mentioned before, they were just simple and fun to play. I also like the way companies would spend alot of time on story telling rather than just sparking up the game with jaw dropping visuals.

Ain't nothing like the old school.

[color=#FF6666][font=Times New Roman][size=4]Ok. I'm basically seeing a one sided things going on here: Post PSII RPGS.

Not surprising. Many of the best RPGs ever came out before this thing. And now hardly any good ones come out. Yes, CT. Yes, FF3. Yes, Terranigma. SMRPG - Yeah. FF7 - The turning point of yes.

Nobody can say that all of the new RPGs are total crap (because that's like me saying I have an infinite source of income). Kingdom Hearts is a prime example of this. People were condemming the game before we even knew what it would look like. And everybody did a 180

Kh...I didn't enjoy the game as much as I thought I would. The plot itself wasn't that memorable (in my opinion). Some next gen rpg's are good, I agree, not all of them suck.

As long as the game is good, I don't care when it came out. I'm a big fan of Nes and Snes Rpgs because thats what I grew up with, but I still appreciate today's Rpgs such as Tales of Symphonia and Paper Mario 2 (If you would consider PM2 a true Rpg)
