ok the idea here is to post challenges for other members to try out..

no cheat codes, game genies or enhancers can be used, just all out gaming ability

only common readily available games can be used, as these have to be done the way they were intended via a nes, and they have to be titles at least 90% of us nes players have good acess to (since a good portion of games didnt get released here and certain euro titles never hit america

to start us off some nice easy challenges:

contra/probotector: score over a million points without the 30 man konami code

duck tales: beat within 10 mins

photographic proof would be good for the challenges, such as maybe a digital clock near the tv for time challenges and a photo of the high score for the point challenges

i have video tape of me beating ducktales in 8 and a half mins, which i should be getting converted to mpg very soon

so if you want to add challenges for the community feel free to do so

Here's a good challenge...

Defeat all 8 bossses near the end of Mega Man 2 in a row using only your P-shooter, on a single bar of energy.
No grabbing that power up they drop and no using "E capsuls".

It's tough. Sometimes Wood Man alone kills me, but I can get past half the battles without getting hit at all.

Easy? I must be EXTREMELY out-of-practice on 'Contra'.
I got killed 3 times just in "Base 1", and couldn't figure out how I use to dodge enemy fire. Then I remembered that you can "press down" to avoid bullets.

How many times in a row do you have to beat this game to amass the "1 million point" mark?
So far I can only get about 250,000 (that "firey" level is whooping me).

im gonna go for higher than that, by realy concentrating, eating my vegetables, saying my prayers and drinking my milk, that score will get beaten by me (eventually)

Fun!!!

It took my second time through the game to break 1,000,000... but I finally did it. I was on my third time through and at the final boss when I finally bit the dust with 1,719,400. It's not as hard as it seems without the Konami Code. I was quite intimidated at first! ha! Anyway, here's my pic:

I'll try my hardest man! I'll leave the video tape for Twin Galaxies to you though, you seem VERY intent on this! ha! My son was getting upset with me playing it over and over, so I was kind of relieved when I finally perished. :flame:

I'm not sure what people would think of this challenge, but it's VERY attainable after some practice.

Ninja GaiDen without dying.

I don't think it's an easy game, but with some work that goal can be reached.

I may attempt ZEN's challenge in a bit, but that does seem rather difficult. Wood Man and Quick Man are pretty tough with one life meter by themselves, let alone the other six bosses. Worth a whirl, though.

i'll definetly give it a shot, i've been near the end of ninja gaiden on one life before, never had the chance to beat it though

yeah i wanna try out zens challenge, it's just a mission getting to the end area when i can be arsed lol

Haha! ZEN, I just CAN'T do your challenge! That's one HARD challenge. Man, I couldn't do very well at all.

When I tried fighting Air Man, his pattern of air that he throws kept going in a way that I HAD to get hit! Of course, I had problems with the aforementioned one's as well. Oh well... Maybe someday I'll learn to beat that challenge.

I would post a screenshot of my score, but I have yet to hit the 7-digit mark.

I still haven't really "tried" the 'Ducktales' challenge. I think it has something to do with pogo-ing the whole time to get through the stages quickly. I haven;t quite learned the layout of the game yet.

Air Man is my least favorite. Sometimes he cheats by tossing three consecutive "unavoidable" attacks, and when that happens, "bye bye" challenge. I always do him first to get it out of the way.

I'll try to get the video of that challenge up sometime, because it's just not very convincing with screenshots (unfortunately, the VGChat Arcade is stealing precious time from me as of right now).

im getting even closer, today i died in the alien lair, which if i had beaten would've added at least 500,000 to my score, well anyways here is the new score of 6,328,400

Well, it seems like you're going to do it Bazariah! And sometime soon, as well! I went ahead and played through one more time... man, this sure gets old playing it over-and-over! haha I almost don't even want to look at the game anymore :P

I only went through five times. On the sixth, I just let my remaining lives deplete so I could take the picture. Got bored. It does get more difficult though, as you had stated... man, enemies are jumpin' from EVERY direction!

Anyway, my updated (and POSSIBLY final) score for Contra... 3,764,300.

i hope i get it done soon man, i want to get at least 7,000,000, but beating the world record would be so hardcore

lol, i know what you mean about it getting old quick when you go mad and repeat multiple times, think what its like for me i gotta review the videos to make sure they are all good with no jumping

and it's not just more enemies either, the aliens from the aliens mouth or the eggs take more hit points too.. and to top it off a higher percentage of randoms shoot too

3,764,300 is a sweet score dude, so if this is the last time you play it at least you went out with an uber score

well i worked out that on average i was achieving 250,000 points getting to the end boss, then an added 500,000 for beating the boss thus totalling 750,000 each each rotation, im guessing by my calculations i'll have to do 9 full completions for the record even though i nearly did it near the end of the eight run... i am thinking of going for ten rotations though if i can get that good

Now, I have thought of a new challenge. It's something that I actually did for the first time ever today, and it felt awesome!

On the first CastleVania, beat Frankenstein with only your whip, and not getting hit by him or Igor. Good luck, it's kind of tough!

it sucks so much i ran through contra 10 times

completion 2 was a 1 life run, completion 3 was a 1 life run and completion 8 was again a 1 life run...

got to completion 9 and i knew that with my score being 6,300,000+ at the end of level 8 i knew i'd be in for the highest score of all time by the time the game started over again

but alas i had exactly the same score as the record holder 6,553,500... so i thought eh? i completed it once more just to be sure so by this point ten completions and the score was exactly the same, 6.553,500 is a max out score which sucks so bad

anyways here is the piccies:

i just let myself die on the tenth start over, i had 21 lives left at that point (no i didnt use the code, you gain 40 lives in total through the game itself)

im gonna have to do the same thing on the u.k version called probotector now, which will be a complete nightmare, but at least i can say i can max the game out now :D

Argh!!! Man, that really does suck! Good job though! I may put that in and try to max out now too :P It helps to have a score to point to. Well, at least you set out to do it, and you still win in the end... maxed Contra!!! ha! Nice!

yeah that'd be cool man, it's nearly 3 and a half hours long though, stupid english systems have a 17.5 % speed reduction, even when using american games

Now that I look at the number, I see why it's the "max score". 65535 is the highest 5 digit number in hex/decimal code. All the 'Contra' programmers did was add two unchanging "zeros" to the score.

You can bet any game that has "65535" in it's score is a max score.

Oh well, at least you "tied" the World Record and can at least hold the thought that you could've broken it if it were possible.

I'm a contra g*d too, but I just can't find my dang cart.

Baz, you should send me one of your 350,000,182 contra cartridges (you know you have that many, Baz) so I can beat the hell out of your score real quick.

I've been known to beat that game without getting hit even once, and killing every enemy along the way.... I don't know how I could get anything but the highest possible score that way.

But for Ninja Gaiden, I can't beat that game. You know that level when you're in that cave (right after you fight that Tiger/woman thing)? I can't beat that level to save my life.

What about Double Dragon? Beat that one without dying. I can't ever get past the two Abobos on the third level....

Do you mean "the Kelbeross" (those jumping gargoyle/dog things)? There's a cave level after them.

At the end of the snow level, there's this thing that jumps from one side of the screen to the other, occassionally firing three shots across the room as it jumps.

It seems to be wearing an animal skin or something, if it's a human. Otherwise it's just something that looks like it's wearing an animal skin.

I first got to that boss in 1992, and just beat it about 2001 or so, and now, I can't beat the next level. I've been trying every now and then for the last few years, but I've given up.

I believe you're talking about Basaquer. He's a pretty cool boss, even though he doesn't do much (like most NG bosses).

The level I believe you are talking about is where you start off in the woods, and then when you get past that, you see a cinema of Ryu looking at the castle, right? So you're having problems getting past the stage that has railroad tracks on it.

There's an hourglass that stops time that you can pick up before you cross the big bridge (only railroad tracks). This will help with a lot of the enemies not coming after you (i.e. less birds). Honestly, that's from memory, 'cuz I haven't NOT gotten the hourglass in so long, that I don't remember :P Besides that, I think everything else is pretty much run and slash. Oh, there's a 1-up towards the end of the level.

As for the Double Dragon challenge... I'll give that a go. I just recently re-conquered that game, though I did die a couple of times. Maybe I can improve my skills!

Ooh! I'm all over this one. I'm usually quite good at "scrolling shooters" (although "scrolling shooters" on the NES leave much to be desired).

Sadly 'Contra' didn't quite work out for me.
