Since there are a few people here interested in buying the site, I'll do a five day auction here instead of going to a webmaster forum and auctioning it off.

What's included: Domain AND database including Dragon Knight and RPG Inferno. Chat rooms are included. Of course the Arcade is included. I'll help the buyer with the transition, for example, show the buyer how to repair/optimize the tables, make the back-ups and download them and get the site to his/her web host. If buyer wants, and can do it, buyer can create a username/password including a mySQL password, on his host for me to install every thing on his/her web host, and then change them after it's installed. SSH root access would probably be needed, and [url=http://demo.phpmyadmin.net/trunk-config/]phpMyAdmin[/url] access would be a *BIG* plus, for if something goes wrong when transferring the database to the mySQL database. (Think mySQL error.)

Forum database size: 341 Megs. If you're on dial-up...move on, this site is NOT for you!! :eek: You do know about backing-up, right?? That includes downloading the database to your computer! Dial-ups, you have no hope in running this site!! :eek: The RPG Inferno and Dragon Knight databases are way smaller!

Starting bid: Got one offer for $250 so it'll start there, with $25 or more increments.

Ending time: Tuesday, December 8th, 9 AM, PST. (If I get a really good offer, or no offers, I may end the auction early.)

vBulletin license info: The current license expires December 17th. As long as you stay at versions that are released *before* December 17th, you won't have to pay any license fees and will be able to use the forum software as long as you want to. Version 3.8.4 is the newest version 3 and I think version 4.0.0 Beta 4 would also be included in this license, as it lets me download it. (Looking at the URL, beta still has bugs, as it still has 'showthread.php?' in the URL!!)

When you wanna upgrade to a version released after December 17th, *then* you'll have to get a whole new license, which will be good for all the version 4s, (think a few years).

Buyer will need his/her own web hosting that allows php/cgi/mySQL databases. Having phpMyAdmin will be a *big* help!

php info: vBulletin version 3.X requires PHP 4.3.3 or greater and MySQL 4.0.16 or greater!
vBulletin 4.0 and higher requires PHP 5.2.0 or greater and MySQL 4.1.0 or greater

You MIGHT be able to survive with out a dedicated server, but I'm not so sure! If buyer doesn't start out on one, buyer should be prepared to get a dedicated server if needed! Right now the forum is on a dedicated server with theplanet.com. Been there ever since 2001 when it was ev1servers. Originally it was with pair.com before it got too big for them to handle!

You do understand the current notoriety attached to VGC, don't you scylla? It's going to be very difficult to turn this place into anything profitable, as the URL seems to be more well known than many think.

I've met a few old VGC users (mostly those cast out for being distasteful or insane) who have expressed a good disdain for the site. I'm sure that they've found a little niche forum that they can exist in and probably tell people about their time at VGC time to time.

Why you would think you could suddenly change the opinion of the internet is beyond me, but I certainly question how you're going to profit from this purchase.

Those links at da bottom actually don't even make a penny!! Though once I did try having some links on the site, at the header, and before and after the threads. That made a tiny bit of cash.

Those two blocked banners up at the header are the only possible money makers on the site right now...and I don't think I've even made enough from those to get a check!!! Activity is what the site needs the most!!! Activity now, a little bit of cash should come later. No activity = Making cash isn't even possible!! I've never really tried to make very much money from the forums. I've just loved to post on forums. Hence I made my first forum way back in 1997 as soon as I could! I feel bad that I don't know who this scylla dude is, or any of this general forum drama that goes on. Can someone give me the cliffnotes version of it?

However, as one of the oldest members of this community, I really hope it goes into the hands of someone who has also been here for a long time, even if I don't know who it is. I know I give this same speech on every post, but many of us have grown up on VGC/WoN (I've been around since I was 7 or 8 and now I'm 20) and it should be kept within the family as has been said before. On that note, I hope whoever acquires the site doesn't bear any grudges or hold any personal vendettas and starts it on a fresh note. I hope I don't see members being banned for no reason at all because a new admin doesn't like them or something along those lines. I really hope for an aesthetic upgrade, maybe some nicer banners (I'm sure some VGCers are nice with photoshop) and some kind of new member crusade of some sort. I know I personally brought a lot of members to the site with my Kingdom Hearts thread on the secret ending that after I left for a year had hundreds of posts. I don't think these newbies should be shunned (even if they do seem kind of juvenile at times) but encouraged to stay. I know for a FACT that a lot of you guys were just like that at one point in time, and I know I said some stupid things on the old WWWboards (most notably, nintendo rules, sony drools way back when lol). I'm sick of the elitism shown here whether it's mocking people's musical taste, literary taste, movie taste, game taste, girlfriends, etc. I'm not saying it should all be rainbows and butterflies, but I really don't like the hostile environment and I could see why new members would be scared away. That being said I don't think the culture of the site should be lost, but somehow I think we all need to come together and figure out what we can do to make this site better. It seems as though, thus far, fnool wants to do this so thus far he gets my vote unless someone else steps up. At first I was kind of sad about the sale of the site, however it seems almost exciting after reading through most of this thread. I just hope whoever acquires it takes all of our ideas into account and we make this a great forum.

Yeah, scylla, honestly—if you're willing to throw down upwards of eight hundred dollars on this site then you would be far better off starting fresh somewhere else.
