I'd love people to recommend me anime that I might actually enjoy. You win extra points if you describe it in detail and link to where I can download episodes.
Funny you should ask because yesterday I found a series that turned out to be really awesome even though it's been a while since I felt like watching anime. It's a comedy series centered around a shy college grad whose only desire is to be in a 'trendy Swedish pop band.' Somehow he ends up forming an over-the-top death metal band instead and even though he's vulgar and does violent things onstage he always regrets it afterwards.
It's called Detroit Metal City. You can stream the episodes here to at least check it out.

what genre are you looking for
because that is a huge piece in choosing what to watch

okay ignore my post and watch detroit metal city
I want some anime that avoids giant robots, has a more mature atmosphere, has plenty of action, some humor, tasetfully used violence and other mature content, a real storyline and avoids being perverted or gay.
Perfect Blue and Serial Experiments Lain are pretty cool, but you may have already heard of them. RahXephon is pretty good, but involves lots of robots. Elfen Lied is ok at best, has a little too much pointless nudity, but the fighting is ultra violent and entertaining. The X television show is really beautiful, has a semi-cohesive story line, is more mature and is just straight up cool. Whatever you haven't heard of I'll explain, but I never got full-blown into anime so all my suggestions are pretty entry level.
As typical as it sounds, End of Evangelion is still my favorite anime anything put out, my second favorite being the show. Then again, I haven't watched it since I was a teenager, so I doubt I'd like it anywhere near as much as I did then. Actually I'd probably find it too angsty now and hate it.
Also check out the manga Uzumaki. It's a super creepy, straight up odd horror comic about spirals.

Well, I talked with Omni a bit more on messenger and it looks like she wants to avoid too much Sci-Fi as well, so Perfect Blue and Lain are right out. Also, I wouldnt' consider Elfen Lied for someone who isn't looking for over-the-top violence and tits.
RahXephon and Evangelion are still (technically) mecha, so they wouldn't fit either. I can't think of too many genre that don't hit far into the future or don't have future tech in the past.
edit: And yeah, Uzumaki is a lot of fun to read because of how creepy it is. Gyo is another strange horror by the same artist, so if you end up liking Uzumaki, read Gyo as well.
first one that comes to mind that would fit into what you're looking for is Welcome to the NHK.
umm, it's basically about this hermit guy who is terrified of the outside world. meets girl who makes him come outside and wacky adventures set forth from there. lots of trippy **** happens mainly because of how ****ed up the guys head is, but pretty much everyone else in the show also exhibits some form of brain ****.
despite my crappy description, it really is a good show.

been meaning to re-watch it for awhile now.
Ninja Scroll (the movie, not that ****ty series)
you should just watch gargoyles
fantastic storyline, fabulous animation, believable characters, great twists, villains who are not cliche
**** now i need to go watch it over again and i just finished!
Ergo Proxy: end of the world. Dark atmosphere, action, serious drama, psychological at some point.
Blue submarine number 6: end of the world. the world is underwater. Some crazy scientist created ****ed up monsters to create more life can't remember quite well. Its only 4 episodes.
Casshern Sins: Completely amazing really. I mean, its casshern c'mon. The action scenes are incredible, especially the sound effects and the animation. Casshern ended the world, but can't remember how he did it. His journey is to find out why he destroyed the world. Casshern is about robots.. but he quite isn't a robot which is why its intriguing.
Detroit Metal City: Intense loling. and watch the movie also.
You may watch Evangelion but its all mecha so eh... but the character's personalities.. just wow. The drama etcetc whatnot.
or watch Excel Saga, you're not going to understand anything unless you watch the series at least 2 times. Just complete randomness.
Samurai Shamploo is also a good one. It mixes free style rap things with the old Japanese culture. Humorous and serious.
I think you can find all of those here

edit: my descriptions are the best. just wiki that **** up.
glad you liked it.
surprised I forgot this one earlier and it's only six episodes!

Hard to describe, I guess about a kid growing up when some weird girl appears and **** starts coming out of his head. It fills all your quotas so I don't think you'll go wrong watching it.
ant i swear to *** if you link lucky start at any point i'm cementing your feet, tossing you on a boat in the ocean, and poking holes in the boat
why would I do that? :( besides, I was never a huge fan of the show.
Cromartie High School
Because it has Freddie Mercury in it.
