Dating isn't too stupid. It helps us learn more about ourselves and how to interact with others, it helps raise our tolerance and patience levels, and for many it is a huge technique used to boost our self-esteem. However, I could easily come up with the counter argument. Relationships are vastly overrated, they hinder our independence, represses our true-identity, and society has a way of making many feel like failures if they're not in a relationship. Many people would choose to stay in an unsuccessful relationship instead of being alone simply because of society's powerful and detrimental influence. There are pros and cons.
