The Death of VG Chat?

Posted by Noir

So...I've noticed that there hasn't been a lot of activity going on here recently. The recent few posts made by people are new members who don't seem to have anything particularly interesting to say.

Are most people on some kind of temporary hiatus or is this forum in the midst of its death throes?

Posted by Panic!

I think it's really just the die-hard members nowadays. And there's me, of course. The resident forum fool who refuses to leave because although there's not reason to stay, there's also no reason to leave.

Pretty much. There are also a few new people that pop up every now and then but very few of them stay and they're generally very very odd.

I still like vgc for the most part. I only recently just came back though and I do admit that there are quite a few older members whose contributions I miss. Then again, it's an internet forum and that's how they work. I wouldn't mind a resurgence of people who go through the usual acting completely stupid, forming little subgroups in vgc, maturing a bit and eventually posting decently.

vgc would be livelier if more people would introduce interesting, original topics for discussion rather than just pointing out the exact same thing everyone else has already been saying for years using the same words in a slightly different arrangement.

forums get old and stale, and sometimes they pick back up again and sometimes they just wither away. it's not dead, it's not dying, it's not alive, and you can always help make it a more enjoyable place if and whenever you want to. so either come up with something worth discussing or don't post at all.

Gimme a break, we're all so 2-Dimensional that I can reliably predict what anyone would say on any given topic, and I bet most people feel the same way. 90% of my posts remain unposted, I'll literally type them up so I feel like my thoughts are in order and promptly close the page. This is in no way an exaggeration, I do this all the time. I already know that it won't change what anyone thinks, I already know that most people here would rather comment on Dexter's weird-donkey family then engage in any kind of intellectual discussion. There's no point anymore.

"anymore" would suggest that there was ever a point to begin with. i don't post here because i expect to gain anything significant out of it, or because i think the regular member base is comprised of wonderful, charismatic, exciting people (quite the opposite, really). it has just become a habitual aid to kill time at work (stupidity makes the time go by faster), and it wouldn't bother me at all if vgc disappeared tomorrow.

In all seriousness, I felt like it's been this way for the past 2 and a half years. VGC has never been a place for intellectual discussion- sure, the conversation was much more entertaining, but not more thought-provoking or anything like that, and with a lack of funny or interesting people, this place has become a ****posting paradise, at least for me.

(seriously have any of you looked at the vB 2 stuff from webarchive? we were all fairly retarded back then, even the so-called "good" members were idiots.)

i'm generally kind of sad at what vgc's turned into. honestly, a fresh lick of paint a few years ago could have really breathed new life into this place, but as long as we've got a stubborn fellator of the white salamander in charge here nothing's going to happen.

plus, the concept of idiots maturing into reasonable people seems to have been left at the wayside. from what i've seen from a quick poke around, the few people still around who were idiots in '06 are still slobbering dicktards today.

also, people quit making game shrines, thus killing it.

The film/tv board used to not suck so bad back in them days when I had good follow-through and contributed more.

That was.. until I realized all films suck.

Posted by Turtle Toupee

it just seems like this boards main problem is there is no topic presented at the main page to discuss.

for example, lets look at thriving message boards, like those at oh i dunno every single other website? escapist magazine? gamefaqs? penny-arcade? if when you typed www.vgchat.com into your web browser and the main page had something like brand new gaming news or tech news or ANYTHING. im even pretty sure there are members here who would be willing to contribute free of charge, if only to have their work (be it a blog or a criticism of a new movie/game, etc., or even a sprite or a comic) presented on the main page of a very highly-visited website. come on! the website is "vgchat" do you know hoow much of a prime position the owner is to make some mad money off this place and bring in huge amounts of members?

i can tell the admin has tried some very bad gimmicks, too. rpg inferno? theres probably been a flash-based arcade and probably a gaia online-like avatar creator and probably a load of other stupid things that failed and made disgusted members move on to other more entertaining websites.

wait holy crap almost 60,000 members? looking at the member list and sorting by recent logins, you have 79 members that have logged in in the last week, that means about .15% of your members are actually active. thats downright pathetic

It's just like how most 18 year old metalheads lose their taste for it within 7 years.

Posted by coromoro

You pretty much speak the truth there, but what I wonder is where the young gamers are, and how come they're not joining VGC to create a fresh and new generation of VGC members to liven up this place? I remember in late 2002 when many youngsters (including myself) joined, and after that we'd have new members joining regularly, and contributing their fair share, usually in the summertime. Maybe there was a "forum craze" before, and the younger generation is no longer interested in posting in forums? Or maybe this website has gone so low that gamers that stumble into this site, upon reading a couple of threads, simply don't bother joining? I want to know why... :o

I actually didn't know that, as I wasn't here very often last year. Not surprising since this has been the story at vgc for a really long time. Speaking of which, it reminds me of the days when vgc was "hacked" occassionally - well, not really hacked but that's what everyone was calling it anyway. Basically that's the only way to get anything done around here.

Don't let my join date fool you, I've been a part of this dump off and on since '01. Under another account then, of course. I became more stagnant in '04 once I gained the skill of remembering user login infos..

IMO Elitist Conversationalist Nazis such as Iris, and Jesse's drama in WU with WH have dragged this place to hell in a crawl. It's too predictable an object [the drama] of these boards (almost as bad as the plot twists from WCW before it's collapse), too prevalant and practiced, and just too ****ed annoying to have any individual opinion or preference (in any conversation) around psuedo e-intelligent pricks.

New members would stick around more often if they weren't hassled or had to constantly be left with the feeling of living up to a high standard on a ****ING CHAT FORUM ON THE INTERWEBS, I.E. That's an easy one. Oldies just come along and are rude to them and scare them off. Heck, I just gave infractions to two of them for just that, in da same thread. Why try to get new members when many oldies are too stupid to learn to not be rude to da newbies. And it was a video game thread that da newbie made! Not some 1337 wacko thread!!!!

It's unfortunate that the idea of growing up to most people means stagnant, boring and limiting. That it's something that happens to you rather than something you should be working towards.

i disagree strongly. i think the real reason new members aren't joining is because VGC is not appealing to them like it was appealing to us when we first joined. we grew up on zelda and mario; the 12-15 year olds of today are growing up on halo 3 and gears of war, and we don't cater specifically to either of them. i bet halo 3/gears/call of duty/guitar hero/whatever forums are sprawling with activity. kids don't want to talk about mario/yoshi and megaman and ****, so we don't see them here.

Blame that on da mods. They have to vote for new boards. And if you havn't noticed, especially with an ant as a mod, new boards are da last thing you'll see here...even if it's a video game board!!! er, we would have to de-mod an ant to get those boards!!! *hint* :D:D:D:D

Nah, that's not true, you're being paranoid of a generation gap that hasn't happened just yet. Kids 12-15 have always wanted to play more mature games. Duke Nuke'm and Diablo II anyone? I highly doubt the lack of newbies in this forum is because kids don't like Mario and just play shootan. My 13 yr old cousin's favorite games still are Mario Galaxy and Zelda:Wind Waker. I even showed him Halo which he showed little interest.

I think both Speedy and ~sigh~ Jesse (weird) bring up good points. Forums were once one of the few means of socializing on the internet, which it's now being replaced with **** like MySpace and Facebook. Having that extra competition (which it is what it is) means that seasoned members of forums (particularly this one) need to realize they're seasoned and shut their trap. Forum hazing didn't make us leave because we had nowhere else to go but another forum. We had to stay and wisen up. Kids now-a-days have so many options that if someone calls them butt face they can just escape the fire by socializing elsewhere like Facebook, where what they say can't follow them. Hell, even on Facebook you can delete posts and only have people who like you read what you say. Online teasing just isn't the same anymore.

Posted by Tyler Durden

People who take hazing seriously on the interwebs are silly.

Posted by Shin-Ra

I disagree with the whole social networking argument. I had a Xanga account when I first started posting here and still give as much of a p00p about that stuff now as I did then. I'm just an example, but the point is that sites like that still existed. I guess the modern sites make it a bit easier for socialization and making new "friends", but it's still nothing that couldn't have been done on a site like that.

Posted by WillisGreeny

Xanga is pretty ****ty compared to Facebook and all the other much more successful networking sites.

Posted by Speedfreak

Difference is everyone used Myspace, everyone uses Facebook and many people use Twitter. I don't even know what Xanga is.

Posted by WillisGreeny

An oversized Live Journal, basically.

Posted by Shin-Ra

Quoting WillisGreeny: Xanga is pretty ****ty compared to Facebook and all the other much more successful networking sites.

Doesn't matter. You add friends, have a picture of yourself and comment on people's crap that they post. It's the same thing in the sense of social networking which was my point.

Now that you bring that up though, I guess the only difference is having to post something if you want attention. When compared to facebook, Xanga was a huge inconvenience for lazy people or those who have grown up and realize no one gives a flying wack about your blogs about your life. I guess that's why Twitter's so popular. Microblogs don't allow people to post much, so you can't go on a huge angsty rant and are reduced to "gotta poop" and "poop's coming out" statements that are simple and "self expressive". Ugh, the popular social networking sites are so pointless - not that I don't use them, just saying.

Speedy, you're nit-picking and missing the point. I'm saying a lot of people who posted here years ago (I was using myself as the example) had some sort of social networking site (blog or whatever) and still posted on forums.

Posted by WillisGreeny

One HUGE difference though...everyone uses Facebook, few used Xanga.

You and I may see it as the same, but for thirteen year olds it's "TOTALLY DIFFERENT". The topic here is "where have all the new posters gone". It's a fact that millions more use Myspace and Facebook over Xanga, which accounts for people's laziness on the internet being an issue. People's time on the internet is then soaked up going to that **** instead of forum posting. Simply because you think it's stupid doesn't mean 12-15 yr olds do, therefore accounting for the lack of newbies in that age group to forums.

The topic isn't how I think Xanga is ****ty, though it's true. Having been a 12 year old myself, during that time I thought Xanga was retarded like all other bloger websites, which seemed intended for teenage girls to ***** about other teenage girls.

no, i don't need to know that you're brushing your teeth

no, i don't need to hear about you taking a **** (sorry js i don't look at your poo topics)

no, i don't need to know that you just had sex with a dead hooker

it doesn't encourage any decent discussion

it's lazy as ****, and people are going to use it anyways because it makes discussion lazy as ****

i agree with everything there but that's really not what twitter is for.

Posted by Stalolin

what

really

well honestly i can see that

i took a one look at twitter and really decided i didn't want anything to do with it

Posted by Fate

I think one of the bigger reasons that people don't post here is because most of the news posted is from other websites and all the opinions expressed on video games come mostly from consumers who pretend to know about game development. Nobody wants to read that.

twiteer is worthless idgi. great you can post a sentence about something

Posted by junior senior

may i tweet about my ****s please

That isn't a new development though, so that wouldn't explain how why now nobody is showing up.

Cats ARE like turtles; they both have a tail, they have four legs, a head, brains, hearts, lungs, etc, they eat, poop, sleep, and mate.

wow

you know this site is dead when the "state of vgc" thread only reaches five pages

Really though, it's dead. There's no saving it. I can't say it was ever much, but whatever VGC ever had is completely gone now. There's no chance for any discussion to go anywhere, save for rare occurences. With an idiotic administrator that makes no effort to make any kind of corrective action, this site was doomed to die.

As far as the social networking argument and junk, I don't know. I've always felt like sites like Myspace/Facebook were always outlets designed for, y'know, real life. I always had a Myspace in my active days of VGC (Now Facebook) and I can't imagine me connecting with people I don't know on Myspace/Facebook the way I do here. They're designed for real life identities, whereas message boards are basically the opposite. Though social networking sites have now become the definitive communities on the internet, their purpose is far too different from message boards to replace them.

In my opinion, it's the message boards that have evolved. Most message boards now are simply an extension to some bigger site. People will begin by voicing their comments in news feeds that work through the message board system, and most who actively do this will feel inclined to join the community and discover the variety of boards to post at. While standalone forums are usually better (in my opinion anyway), I think they've become obsolete.

vgc was basically doomed anyway though lol

It's true that Twitter and Facebook aren't there to specifically get people talking about videogames, but talking about videogames was not the main attraction of Video Game Chat for most of us, either. It was the Off-Topic and Community forums that were the main buzz, the main thing that kept everyone interested in what was going on. Now that social networking sites are keeping the youngsters from feeling lonely, we don't have much to offer them, especially since none of us even care about this place anymore.

Turtle is right about most other message boards thriving off of news of more important things. That's why the only forums that have any activity at all are the general gaming forums. I kind of liked it the way it was, with just a relatively medium-small amount of us talking about new games and games that have just come out, but now that community is dying off too. :(

Posted by Fate

Awww, and I even stopped moderating just for you guys! Didn't work. Let's start a riot.

Posted by maian

I wouldn't say talking about video games wasn't the main draw. For the majority of us, talking about video games was the reason we came to VGC, only we found we got bored with doing only that and moved on to the community. But I'm pretty sure none of us were like, "I'm looking for a great internet community to find friends. I'll try this video game forum!"

Posted by Tyler Durden

Well I'm looking for a great internet community to score sum DRUGS. I think I'll try this video game forum!!

Posted by Fate

maian: I visit PlayStation Home a lot more because of the likelihood of meeting people that are cool and play video games that I play consistently.

Quoting maian: But I'm pretty sure none of us were like, "I'm looking for a great internet community to find friends. I'll try this video game forum!"

that was actually the case with me, haha. i wanted to carve my own little niche into a new community since i was bored with most of my prior haunts. all the video game discussion was merely a bonus, i was like "yeah, i can dig that too"

Posted by Ant

Quoting Fate: I visit PlayStation Home

LOL

Posted by Degeneration

So have they horded around you yet or is your character a guy

Posted by Fate

I've met some cool people there. There is some crowding but I eventually find a group I'm comfortable with. It's nice to find people in a different community.

Posted by Speedfreak

>Playstation Home.
>Community.

Lolwat.

Posted by Fate

Ever been there? That's exactly what it is.

Posted by fnool

postin to say heh at playstation home, fate

Posted by Fate

You're so funny I don't know what to say.

Posted by KaRza

Are there at all any socially active games that give you the chance to really talk about other crap? No, not even World of Warcraft and their addiction towards ridicule.

Communication sucks in a game, why bother playing a 3rd rate thing like Playstation Home just to talk to some random person about crap that you could easily do with a real life friend, I don't know, outside where you could probably prevent death from lost of vitamin D.

Posted by Fate

KaRza: It is possible that you've been too cynical about this approach to communication to realize that there is value if you put in the effort to make it valuable. I've been on this gaming forum for about eight years now where text communication is all we have and still I haven't met anyone I could game with consistently as I have in places like MySpace and Home. It's a little coincidental and all too convenient if you were to have good friends that only lived in your neighborhood.

And personally I like my pale skin.

Posted by O.T.L

I like Fate's color.

I wish I was lighter, I'm stuck with a tan I can't get rid of.

4chan.org

Posted by Dexter

That's so different. It being an image board and the lack of community and membership is far too drastic of a change. No, I will continue here, even though I often feel like nothing more than a lurker, and wait for VGC to become active and entertaining again. My hope is still intact.

Posted by Stalolin

it's dead

jesus

go browse another video game forum

maybe digg or reddit

or maybe you can just watch adorable anime for the rest of your life

Posted by fnool

dont even bother with reddit. it's turned into digg in the past year

Posted by Fate

Kotaku forums are up.

Posted by fnool

kotaku rules

their headlines about GAMERS and GAMERS' RIGHTS and GAMER PERSECUTION and ARE VIDEO GAMES ART YET???? are deep and emotional and relevant.

i also like the way they butcher the english language and defecate on journalistic convention.

Posted by Fate

Editorials are always full of crap, in any place they are published. There's a few updates they have that don't contain the word "I" anywhere.

The forums are up. Never said anything about the site itself.

Posted by Stalolin
dont even bother with reddit. it's turned into digg in the past year

but you still post there

i found you on accident

Posted by fnool

yes i mainly post there to ***** about how horrible and arbitrary the place is now. i'm still looking for a new social news site, this is getting ridiculous

Posted by netman

vgc died the day i left

Posted by fnool

miss fate ~internet gurl~

Posted by Fate

Pretty much, yeah.

Posted by Dexter

Fate has an interesting character and a story that hasn't made noticeable progress for awhile. I need some VGC member updates. Altinure isn't married, Jesse Smith gave up on ***, and Raptor's on some terrific adventures. Create the thread!

Posted by Stalolin

i don't know how much i care about the rest of vgc anymore

Posted by Dexter

Has it ever really been about VGC as a place or is it more for the characters that come and go and you find yourself cozy around. Maybe a mixture of both...

Posted by fnool

heres an update on my life

smokin sharks everyday

Pics or it didn't happen.

I like Kotaku. :cookie: Speaking of which, anyone got any commenter invites, by any chance? lol

Giant sites like IGN, Gamefaqs, and Gametrailers are great sites but have *** awful communities. I'm looking for another site like this. Just a standard VB message board devoted to games, and nothing more. With a relatively big community, but small enough to the point where you actually feel people are reading your posts.

you can tell he's serious cause he deleted his avatar and signature.

Someone will make it. I still have VGC faith.

Posted by Kutlass

after my most recent adventure around the world where i experienced a great deal of face-to-face interaction with real people i can closely relate to and connect with, and developed meaningful friendships with people i actually respect, i've realized just what a waste of life places like vgc are.

bbl, gonna go update furaffinity and watch the wizard
