I'll be tilling in about a week hopefully! I sprayed everything down yesterday, so it should be 7-14 days before it all dies. Then I'll turn it all up and organize the area. So far I have lettuce, snap peas, radish, sweet corn, carrot, green bean, sunflower, summer squash, mixture (HUGE) squash, and pumpkin seeds as well as tomato and pepper (hot/sweet mix) plants. I should be getting a few more plants from my parents, too, since their garden is going to be overcrowded. It's gonna be crazy awesome.
Progressively greener pics to come!
i cant help but notice that you dont plan on growing any weed
surely thats merely an oversite.

Pretty much will be planted in the main area pictured first, along with the green table grapes. I'll probably plant strawberries in the round spots. The bark chip area behind those round things already has a fig tree, two blueberry bushes, and a couple other things I've forgotten. I have no idea how well those will turn out, though.
Behind the garden (and beyond that big deer fence) there are wild plum and apple trees that are 100% delicious. There's one transparent green apple tree inside the fence that will be good for apple sauce. And down the hill (past the round things) there are a couple apple trees, one plum tree, and some concord grapes.
So yeah, I sprayed it all because it's been growing over for two years, and now I'm waiting to see the results so I can start using the rototiller. I'll post pics when it's all leveled out and brown.

sweet, what does it look like now? i've got to start mine this week.
It looks all yellow, and I tore out the blackberry plants. Couldn't get the rototiller started though, so I'm gonna try that again tomorrow morning.
bummer. take some more pics
My parents are sending me emails like HURRY UP AND TILL THE GARDEN because my mom wants to visit again and help me plant. But I'm like LISTEN GUYS IT'S MEMORIAL WEEKEND I'VE GOT SOME PARTYIN TO DO. sigh. Two of my tomato plants are looking really cute, though. Maybe I'll take pics of those.
just do it

This is what I'm dealing with right now. I've gotten it to sputter for about 10 seconds twice, but now I can't get anything out of it. The biggest problem is that the choke lever is a tiny screw that doesn't function like it should. So I have to simultaneously toggle a screw on the engine and jimmy the throttle at the end of the handlebars. such a beast
whoa, that thing's an ancient beast. good luck!
So I bought a lil strawberry plant. Gonna plant all my stuff tomorrow, woo! Also getting my tomato plant on monday, pretty pumped for that. pics to follow
I've grown both. The Tomato plant was a lot easier to grow than the Strawberries. Though I enjoyed the strawberries a lot more. so juicy...
homegrown strawberries own hardcore. what kinda tomatoes did you have? BEEFSTEAK?
they were red.
no ****?
I'm not a tomato expert, and I never will be.
ive never grown anything useful. :'(
should grow some weed
keyword: useful.
weed is one of the most useful things i can think of.

All that's left to plant are more carrots/beets if I want them, and maybe some sunflower seeds. It's too late to plant strawberries, so I haven't decided what to do with the circles yet. I might take out all the decorative stones around them and the fence around the garden, though, since those are pointless right now. I can make more tomato cages out of it!
(H) wow, you have been hard at work! Did you start everything from seeds?
Nah, my parents started the tomatoes, peppers, and some of the lettuce in pots at their house and brought them over here. I'd been tending to the tomatoes and peppers in pots for a couple weeks before we planted them. But in about two weeks all the stuff we planted seeds for should start coming up! There's a notebook around here somewhere that has a map of the garden, so if I find it I'll list everything we planted.
that's a pretty big garden you have there.
may I touch it?
sweet, do it
here's mine so far. the coriander just started to come up today and i got my tiny tim's yesterday that i ordered so i'm pleased! now to plant all the rest...

the coriander is growing surprisingly quickly, despite the ****ty weather we've been having. i'm still bringing them in at night because it's ****ing cold. planted the basil the other day so it should be coming up in a few days. also got some more plant pots so i can plant the rest of the veggies today!

pretty hard to get high off industrial hemp, cool garden though. bitch.
can't industrial hemp be referred to as "weed" anyways since they're the same plant? whatever I'm not the moron here, ignoring uses other than getting high because getting high sucks anyways, WEARING COOL SHIRTS IS WAY BETTER!
I found a packet of snap peas the other day so I might have to plant those when it stops raining! Speaking of rain, it's been kind of like those days in harvest moon where you wake up and it's raining and you're like "**** yes I don't have to go water all my crops today. I can go into town first thing, or go exploring, or do whatever I want but this day will never include walking from the spring to the field over and over and watering all my ***forsaken potato plants, plus the rain can water all those plants that I mistakenly placed where I can't water them so they'll eventually bear fruit in 10-15 rainy days, or they'll just dry out and die"
****in love that game.
I didn't even bring out my crops this morning it was so cold. It's like, almost below freezing in june, wtf.

Great thread. I'm eager to move out so I can grow a garden of my own. When I lived in Austin as a kid I grew all sorts of stuff because we had a lot more land, but since I moved I haven't had the space to grow anything. I've still gotten to help out a bit. At the local Buddhist temple (look at the photo galleries) I helped out in their garden a few times and my grandpa lives like 5 miles away from my house and he grows potatoes, tomatoes, squash and other various vegetables. Once I go back to Austin or move to Portland I'll start growing stuff for sure, I miss it.
That's a nice garden.
I wish it would warm up so I wouldn't have to keep my plants in most of the time. wtf june it's supposed to be summer.
ok so now it's so freakin hot i have to water the plants all the time. updated pics tomorrow, you should do the same.
i think the most ive ever grown was a cactus that used to sit on the porch
always thought it would be neat to have a little garden, but never had any land to implement it
I'll post some pics by Tuesday... Stuff's coming up! And yeah it's pretty hot so I'm watering at night with the sprinkler and spot-watering in the middle of the day with a can. Some deer got in the other day and cut my tomatillo down to 50% along with some peppers and stuff, so my roommate put up barbed wire over the pathway it got through. Hopefully my neighbor doesn't notice, since it used to be the path to his house.

You must have a pretty big patio huh? What's chocolate mint like, and what'll you use it for? I've got zero herbs right now (except for some cilantro that won't die from 3 years ago), but that might change soon.
lol
yeah it's fairly large. I'll take a pic of the entire balcony next time. i think i can use the choco mint in cakes and cookies, so next time i make cookies i'm gonna give it a try! i've never really grown herbs before so i'm pretty excited to start using them fresh.
some of my tomatoes are turning red and i have a teeny tiny green strawberry! pics to come
how's yo garden doing?
Since my parents came over today they immediately headed into the garden and told me what was ready to pick. So we've got a few cherry tomatoes, one jalapeno, some beets, lettuce, green onions, and some overripe radishes in the house. My roommate made a soup with the radishes and it's definitely edible. I picked rainier cherries the other day from some trees my dad planted 5 years ago, and I think a handful of blueberries will be ripe soon. Plus the apple tree above the garden which is going to give us tons of apple sauce. Things are going to start flowing in from the garden and surrounding area!
I'll take pictures this time for sure! I was feeling really down about the garden since a deer got in and demolished some peppers, peas, and green beans last week, but I feel a little better now that it's being productive.
**** wildlife
my garden is so slooooow. i had to buy blueberries and strawberries yesterday. :(
2 tomatoes look edible. will update
The same stupid deer has come back into my yard several times over the last few days. He just can't stay away from the apple tree. TOO BAD FOR HIM THE APPLE TREE IS NEXT TO THE GARDEN
He was actually just here, and this time he made so much noise I could hear him while I was inside the house. Just knocking down tons of apples and stuff. So I threw an 18 inch hammer at him. Missed his head by about 4 feet, but I have a feeling every time he comes over here it'll get closer.
Kill it and have delicious deer steaks.
or capture it and ride it to work. free pet!
Ugh, since my last post I've chased him out of the yard about 5 more times, but he's stopped coming around for now. He broke a little section of a fence and made me lose my really cool hammer since I threw it at him again in the dark.
The last few days the garden has started doing all kinds of crazy stuff. I'll go take some pics and die in the 102 F heat with 40% humidity

It's quite a bit greener now. The intense heat is keeping me out of the garden and making weeds grow like no farmer's business.

Those deer mother****ers thought they'd seen the last of my peppers, but this'll ****ing show them. Too bad the peppers aren't nearly as hot as I had hoped. next year: entire garden of ***-****ing hot peppers

This is that tomatillo that got beat down a few weeks ago. Now it looks like several flowering plants and the bees are lovin it.

sweet garden, bro. will take some pics of mine tonight if it stops raining ever.

my humidity can beat up your humidity
despite that winnipeg is more humid right now. EAT IT
i'm starting my own garden
hey cool gamer dad
some of my tomatoes shriveled up :(
aww :(
i had my first strawberry the other day! another one is on its way. sooo goood
All I've had for strawberries this year were two tiny (delicious) wild ones, a package of store-bought ones, and a handful of grown ones at someone's house. The latter happened last week, and I was totally surprised to be able to pick them fresh since I thought strawberries were done with here by the time I started planting.
In the last week I've had some tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and green onions from the garden. My roommate made soup that incorporated the overripe green onions and it turned out alright. I've mostly used the tomatoes on sandwiches so far, but I think I'll boil some up for chili or something later, when a bunch come in at once. A handful of green beans made it through the deer-o-caust, but I haven't tried them yet. Apples are pretty much over, but we have tons of sauce and cider. Plum cherries are basically done, too, but I might pick a few more before I forget. If I had a dehydrator so much more of this stuff wouldn't go to waste! Transparent apples are soooo good dried out, probably the same with cherries. Oh, hopefully the pear harvest goes well in the next week or so, since I'd like to can a bunch of 'em. And I guess blackberries are harvest-able, too, but I'm having trouble finding big healthy patches of them.
when i checked the weathernetwork it was!
rent a house, it's much better. or a townhouse
depends on whats available, how much it costs, etc
ill get up to 1700 a month for rent, so i can afford a smallish place by myself here, but im still thinking about getting 1 or 2 other guys and getting a highrise penthouse on the beach.
because **** it, i can
holy cow, i pay 280/month on rent
heh
you live in north dakota.
back in charleston our rent was 1200 a month, split between three guys. me and one dude paid 375, and the dude that took the master bedroom paid 450. BAH is the ****, becuase i was still gettin paid 1200 a month even though i was paying 400ish (utilities etc). OHA sucks, because if youre authorized up to 1700 (for my rank, anyway) but if your rent is 800, you get 800 and no more. tis bull****.
beach property owns everything
yeah, looking into an 11th story 3 bedroom apartment that overlooks the ocean.

Today we weeded a little since there wasn't enough car space to carry everyone anywhere. I had completely forgotten about one tomato that was missing a cage and was kinda sprawled out on the ground surrounded by weeds. Seeing that limp green figure so helpless in the face of native grasses sparked a spark in my heart so now I will be Tomato Protector Forever.
i prefer my tomatos in suace form.
the thought of having my own little herb garden is annoying me, because its just one more thing that i cant do until i get my own place, which probably wont be until like, september/october ish. fuuuuuck
I've just been eating my tiny tims whole. They're like candy.
I've had 3 strawberries so far and I only see two more possible berries. Not very happy about that.
picked a boatload of tomatoes this morning. my tomatillo and ? are huge now and have had flowers for a long while but nothing has come of it as of yet.
I'm having trouble using all the tomatoes as they come in, since I'm basically the only person who eats em. I guess my roommate likes fried green tomatoes, so we might have to try that since I've never had it.
Same with my tomatillo! It's freakin massive and looks like three plants, but no tomatillos have formed yet.
yeah and still there's nothing! it'll be getting cold soon. :(
l2notcanada
currently planning out turning an old chest of drawers into a grow cab, gonna buy the hell out of some cfls and mylar, oh and yeah probably gonna go for a photoperiod strain and not autoflowering. might go 12/12 from seed to harvest. good times in the pipeline.................VIDEOGAMES

side note: I just found out it's really easy to make/upload youtube videos with this thing. expect a couple more maybe sometime soon!
hahha **** i dont know why i laughed so much at that
oh yeah it's because i'm ****ING COOKED RIGHT NOW
**** i am jealous of the purple potatoes. please send me some in the mail
I might let you pay me to take some more pictures of the purple ones...
Besides harvesting all the potatoes I got a lot of tomatoes and some disappointing carrots. The biggest one was maybe as big as my thumb. I'm scared the cold weather is going to split the rest of the tomatoes before they ripen. One of the plants is loaded with fruit but all of it is still green.
green beans are over
peppers are over
sunflowers are about to open, but will probably get ice-****ed before they see the light
squash is just hanging out and slowly getting bigger, in a couple weeks I'll start drying them
Oh and we have a gun now, so if that deer comes back again it'll be hamburger time; America.
i am down
i only had one carrot that came up and it's so tiny. i am sad
Forgive me, potatoes...
what you should do:
NOT WASH THEM
let them sit outside in the shade 1-2 days to toughen the skin
rub excess dirt off them
put them in a cold dark place
what I did:
washed the heck out of em
let them sit out for ~6 hours (to dry, mostly)
put them in a cold dark place
Anyways, ate mashed taters last night and they were delicious. Potatoes? More like expensive safeway steak of the earth.
you have to let them sit out in the shade? huh
POTATO uses HARDEN
POTATO's defense increases!
Gardening season is almost over (my sun flowers came up just in time to get rained on, and we're close to our first frost), so I think I'll phase this thread into an Off-Season Kitty Only Thread.
I got two today. :)

They arrived a few hours ago and are already starting to feel more safe. We'll see if they like the paper-based cat litter I got the other day, but I might be switching to a compost-able type that clumps better soon. So far the black one is named The Void and the creamsicle colored one is nameless. Ideas include Baldur and... idk haven't come up with any winning ideas yet. help
Finally! aww they are so cute, I need more than two pics
how about a VIDEO?!

alright this was taken one shot ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW the camera gets a little funky with the lamp light later on SINCE I WAS BORN but we are hoping satisfactory kitten activity is to be viewed
By the way, I'm just holding a laptop up in the air which explains most of the weirdness. The yellow/white one still doesn't have a name. It's too bad because it makes talking to him kind of awkward sometimes.
I also lol'd when the kitty fell. *** I WANT
it shall be named Spot. If its a good enough name for Data's kitty, its good enough for yours.
****, now i wanna watch TNG.
Ode to Spot
felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature
an endothermic quadroped, carnivorous by nature
your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skill and natural defenses
i find myself intruiged by your subvocal oscillations
a sinlgular development of cat communications
that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection
a tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counter balance
and when not being utilised to aid in locomotion
it opften serves to illustrate the state of your emotion
oh spot, the level of behavior you display
connotes a fairly well developed cognitive array
and although you are not sentient, and do not comprehend
i nonetheless consider you a true valued friend
postscript: ******* im a nerd, i was able to type that from memory
Wow, wtg man, trekking up my thread. That reminds of me of this tiny book of Irish cat poems that I really need to get and then transpose onto the internet. And yeah, you're a nerd bro.
The white one's name MIGHT be Ocelot, but I'm not 100% on that one. I also have a grand youtube video in mind, but it would probably require an actual video camera rather than a built in iSight.
every thread needs more cat related trek quotes.
also, you need to fatten those cats up for maximum FACE FULL OF CHUBBY KITTY BELLY D'AWWWWWWWW
We'll see about fattening them up once they ****ING LEARN HOW TO **** PROPERLY
Pretty much the only problem I've had so far is that The Void likes to position himself with legs resting on the plastic edges of the litter box so that his poo lands right outside the box. Then he scratches the clay inside the box a little bit and wanders off. Plus the other cat just hangs out in the litter box when he's bored and moves the clumps around. Every time he goes in there I want to take him out so he doesn't just play, but I never know if he actually needs to relieve himself. might as well just kill myself
haha mine did that when i first brought them home. sat in the litter box, sleeping, ****ting, eating...
those are some cuuuute kitties, how old are they?
you should call him macbeth
haha tonight The Void was tearing at the food bag to the point where it was about to burst open so I ran in there, picked him up, called him a dick, then realized their food bowl was totally empty. sorry guys, momma's tryin
edit: ant, we're talkin bout

right?
yes. the
So I think the white one's name is Ocelot for sure now since he's a total *****. MEOOOOWWWW.... MEOWWWW MEWWWWWWWWW... MEOOOWWWOOWOWOWOWOOOOWWW...
"hey buddy what's wrong?"
meow? *skips away*
sounds more like he should be named kunt.
*****es a lot but dopesnt know what it wants
AMIRITE GUYS? mysogyny ftw. **** im drunk
had to bring my tomatoes in because it went below freezing last night. i'm afraid to look at my flowers and other plants :(
Have you checked your other plants yet? :( The tomatoes are finally over as of a few days ago. First they were hung up in the greenhouse totally dirty and made a huge mess, then their products were left in the fridge for a week before processing just taking up space. I'M GLAD THEY'RE DEAD
The cats have been keeping me entertained and frustrated in turns. Now when I get upset with them they're called Pussalot and The Dick, but since they don't know their real names that might not help either of us. The best thing they do is pile into my lap while I'm at the computer and be all cute and sleepy.
Ocelot's strengths: meowing loudly, licking hands/fingers/elbows raw
weaknesses: glasses of water thrown in his face
The Void's strengths: having a cuter meow than Ocelot, getting locked in rooms that he shouldn't be in anyways
weaknesses: absolutely none, he faces all challenges with an icy uncaring attitude
Everything's dead, it's too cold here now. :( I have to set up my grow-lights and try growing herbs inside this winter. My tomatilla didn't produce, takes too long for my pathetic summer. sigh
I need more kitty pictures, here's one of paige being scary:
you can see the hatred in her eyes for having that thing wrapped around it's body.
