The PS3 is getting an expanded version of Ninja Gaiden 2 featuring two more playable characters (Ayane and Momiji), modified gameplay, online co-op and exclusive DLC.

March 24, 2009 - This year's Game Developers Conference is already bursting at the seams with tasty information. At the PlayStation Store in San Francisco, Tecmo set up a brief session officially announcing Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2's U.S. launch. Rumors began to circulate online in the weeks leading up to the show, making the unveil a little less surprising but no less informative. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is an upgraded version of the original Ninja Gaiden II that hit the 360 last year. Sigma 2 will be a tweaked, greatly expanded version of its predecessor, featuring new weapons, new techniques and two new characters.

Obviously Ryu's story mode will be available in the PS3 version, but Ayane -- a fan-favorite from the Dead or Alive franchise -- will also be playable in her own story mode and she sports a flashy set of moves that are reminiscent of her move set from the Dead or Alive fighters. The other character introduced was the beautiful Momiji, a character originally found in Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DS. Wielding an impressive lance and some elaborate aerial combos, Momiji will add yet another layer of gameplay to Sigma 2 that elevates the experience beyond the 360 version.

Apparently, Team Ninja wanted to make Sigma 2 a culmination of all the previous Ninja Gaiden efforts, as it will be the sixth iteration of the series. That's one of the driving reasons for the inclusion of the two new characters, as well as the gameplay tweaks that have also been included. Team Ninja monitored the feedback from both gamers and industry representatives alike in order to fine-tune the experience for the PS3. This includes a more streamlined camera system as well as an adjusted difficulty level -- which will still, of course, challenge players with ridiculous enemies.

Although no official announcement was made at the event, Team Ninja does hope to support the game after launch with DLC, though 360 users will be left out. The developers have no plan to bring the extra content (both on the disc and the possible DLC) to Microsoft's current-gen console.

With all this new content, the news is made even sweeter when Team Ninja announced that -- for the first time in the franchise -- online co-op will be available in Sigma 2. That's right, players will be able to take both Ryu and one of the new characters into the online landscape and battle the endless hordes of evil together. Sounds like a hot date to me.

Sigma 2 is scheduled for Fall of this year and, according to Team Ninja, should pack in everything you would expect from the Sigma series.

I never got to try NG2 on the 360, so this might be worth checking out. Bring a Dead or Alive game over next. Itagaki who?
