Oh, yes, they play very nicely for me. The brown one's 42 years old - all the lacquer on the fingerboard has been worn away, so its really smooth and easy to shift on. The purple one is just a cheap model, but it works for now and I've got a good amp for it, so that makes up, I guess.

Mine's basically a physics test, yeah. I had some code that kind of emulated Mario 3-like physics/jumping, but it only ran at 20 beats a second. My latest one runs at 60. Trying to get a game finished by the end of the month, I've got another program with all kinds of cool s[COLOR=lightgreen]h[/COLOR]it that I wrote like sprite animation and collision detection that I'm going to merge it with.

But, awe, poor kitty.
He was a stray that a friend of mine took in from a neighbor and gave to me. We don't know how he became a stray (might have wandered away from the mother, etc.). We didn't know how old he was, but we assumed that he was old enough to not need his mother's milk anymore. He had a good set of teeth on him so we gave him soft kitten food. He made strange meowing noises the whole time we had him, but we just assumed it needed more food and water. After a little bit, he wouldn't eat or drink anything. We got really worried on Halloween when he started leaving my lap and falling over like he was sick, so we were going to take him to the vet the next day. I let him sleep next to me in the bed since he was meowing all night. For whatever reason, I woke up on one of his meows and took him to the bathroom to see what was wrong, like if he swallowed something he shouldn't have or if he needed more water. I opened his mouth and put small droplets of water in to see if he reacted. He died about a minute later. We only had him for four days.
After Tex died, we did some research on the possibilities. The only one that made sense was that he was malnourished. He likely didn't get the nutrients he needed by the time he was given to us and we were new to kittens under eight weeks old. Apparently, a drop of corn syrup would've saved his life (if malnourishment was the case). He died before we ever figured out what was really wrong with him. :(
Also, for reasons unknown, we left him at home one day and his small cheeks were puffy when we came back. We didn't have any chemicals around, so we don't know why that was.
Man, that sucks. Even if it was just for four days it's always a pretty sad experience. My last one that died was only around for six months and even his death was fairly crushing. But it's better that than suffering I guess.
Sad thing is it was my boyfriend's first pet lost. He didn't take it very well. We were both upset for days.
It doesn't work.

But...I did something like this in a day. The prototype before the first prototype I posted wasn't any less complex than this. The jumping prototype was just added on to that the next day. And you did this in python, which is supposed to be much nicer than C++.
So what's your point? Do you have something to prove? Why not work on your own game instead of imitating tests I did a month ago?

You can't see it but these enemies walk back and forth along platforms, kind of like a red Koopa Troopa. You can jump on them and the bouncing mechanics are very similar to Super Mario Bros 3.

Yeah, I put a lot of effort into making it feel good. Giving it that kind of feel made collision detection a shitload harder. A lot of the jumping and running physics I got from just staring at SMB3 and figuring out how it works. I could probably get it feeling exactly like it but I dunno if it'd be a great idea to put a game that plays exactly like SMB3 on my demo reel. On one hand it shows a lack of originality, on the other it proves I can design code that performs like one of the most highly rated games of all time.
Man my graphics card is so outdated. I took it out the other day to clean it and I broke the **** latch
on the PCI-E port because I pushed it the wrong way. I'm scared to put a new one in now incase it explodes or something :(

I just spent almost a minute AND YES THAT IS A LOT OF TIME WHEN YOU ARE A JUMPING SLIDING RED BOX trying to get onto that platform that's exactly one box-length from the ceiling. After I finally got up there I figured I should be able to skate over to the other platform and then jump up and get that red square in the corner but NOOOOOO I just fall down about one box-length short of my goal. You did that on purpose didn't you? Anyways, I guess I'll go check out the rest of the program now that I'm totally ****ed off.

Pretty cool! By far the most fun thing to do is jump/slide around places where you put two floating boxes with one right above the other. It's fun to do figure eights and go different directions. Am I right in guessing that moving platforms is up next? Or did I read that somewhere in this thread...

You should be able to get there just by doing a run up from the end of that platform and not jumping. Sometimes you'll be exactly one pixel too far away to land on it, I'm not entirely sure why that is since it's big enough to reach top speed, but then Mario pulls weird crap like that so I'm not too bothered. That section at the beginning is basically made up maximum-distance jumps, I use it when tweaking the physics. Keep walking right and you'll see a little homage to Mario.
Moving platforms will come eventually, but not next. Next is sprite animation, then a title screen, lives and collectables. Then I'm "shipping" it. All the other stuff will come by summer.
X: I'm actually going to get artists to do all the graphics in the end. Free art for me and a little exercise for them to see how their stuff actually looks working in a game.

The enemies are now what are supposed to be cows and the player is a spaz-running red stickman. You've got 3 lives, if you touch an enemy on the sides you lose a life, lose all 3 and it's game over.

Wow, it's so different now. That was fun, actually. It all feels very nicely calculated, like bouncing on the cow to land right on the milk jug. Feels a lot like Mario. Good job, Speedfreak. :)
