My personal favorite video game song and opening of all time.
I've always had an interest for composing video game music, So i've always greatly respected the many composers in video games. As I bought video games over the years I developed a habbit of checking the credits for composer names and studios before even turning the system on. Doing this for 12 years has been really rewarding, since now when I hear a song by Uematsu I can instantly think back instantly to all his earlier work and look for connections to the present, and then try to peice together a possible thinking process for making my own work. It's not what I originally planned on doing when I was 7 by learning all the composers, but that's what my habbit eventually became.
The obvious composers like Nintendo's Koji Kondo, Hirokazu Tanaka, or Square's elites like Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda, and Yasunori Mitsuda, are known for their respected works, and its easy to see how their music has changed over the years since their games were very popular. Something a little more interesting, however, is learning about some known composers that are known for certain games but not others.
My Top Five List of Not-so-known-for Video Game Composers:
5. Yoshihiro Sakaguchi. Megaman 1 and 2. Street Fighter.
A lot of people have marked Sakaguchi's work as Bun Bun's (Yasuaki Fujita), but Sakaguchi was the actual composer of Megaman 1 and 2, aswell as Street Fighter 1 I believe.
4. Miki Higashino. Gradius, Contra III.
A lot of people may know Higashino for her Suikoden music and think that's all she ever did, but she was actually the composer for the classic series Gradius, aswell as Contra III. Another thing people seem to not know about her is that she's a she.
3. Jeremy Soule. Secret of Evermore.
Yes, the man who composed the music for Elder Scrolls (Oblivion), Guild Wars, Dungeon Seige, Warhammer, and many other Video games is also the man who composed the music of Secret of Evermore. I had actually learned his name in 96, so when his name kept popping up amoung my friends in later games I'd say "Hey! did you know he did Secret of Evermore's Sound tracks?" and they'd respond with "You mean Mana?" because my friends suck.
2. Yoshino Aoki. Megaman X3.
Another women composer who's frequently mistaken as being a dude on music forums (what's up with this, guys?), popularly known for her songs in Breath of Fire, specifically for BoF II, III, and IV. BUT, before making RPG music, she composed for Megaman X3. Weird turn, eh? Capcom did good though.
1. Duane Decker. Rise of Nations
Now, most of the people I've mentioned on my list are well known for their other work, but Duane is still sortof an unknown guy for all of his work in RTS games. One of my favorites of his is "high strung" in RoN, which I suggest listening to if you haven't already. He's also a composer for Sid Meir's Civilization Revolution that came out not too long ago.

Nobuo's a genius. There's so much you can say about the soundtrack in this game, and so many songs to choose from, but this one was always my personal favorite because it's Native American sound was unique and unlike any other song in the game. Red XIII who always despised his father and believed he abandoned the Canyon like a coward, later finds out he gave his life to protect it. A touching subplot, and this song tells the story beautifully.

I can't describe how much I loved this song the first time I set foot into Stone Tower Temple. It was just another freaking amazing job MM did at making a phenomenal atmosphere. Although the game was pretty crappy for being part of a best selling series, Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- had some good soundtracks. An evolved version of some FFVII tracks and some newer ones. I did however find some to be put in the wrong moment in the game as well as some should have been a bit different in instramental play like [SOLDIER Battle] had a kick *** intro but the rest of the track didn't fit the fight...
