I am going to see Peste Noire in 10 days.

Peste Noire is coming to Ottawa, and Akitsa and Sombres For

Small club = go straight to the front before any sets start

Being a BM gig, don't stand DIRECTLY in front of the drums if you want to enjoy the rest of the music

When I saw Wolves In The Throne Room, I was right in front of the drums for the first five minutes of their set, and quickly moved to the right when space opened up. **** can dominate everything, so be careful.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Yeah, I'm going this Saturday, or Sunday depending. Pretty darn excited, but as for tips black metal shows seem to be some of the more laid back shows I've been too. But I still stand halfway back in case a big mosh pit starts since I don't like getting involved in those. And going near the front of the stage is the worst unless you plan to stand by a speaker. Most uncomfortable area in the whole venue.

Posted by Klarth

I've been to a few places where it's as simple as sitting on the edge of the stage when you're up front. I was close enough to high-five Steve Moore when I went to see Earth, and that's exactly what I did :)

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

I don't like people constantly bumping into me and pushing me forward. But that's me. Only time it's really worth it is if the band is using a lot of bass and there's a spot by the speaker.

Posted by G-Sides

imo, assess the crowd while you're in line or walking around inside. if you think it's gonna be a rough show and don't want to get fckdup then stand kinda in the mid-back. if it's gonna be not so angry, get right to the front if you like the band enough. front isn't always terrible. front got me a toy from Buckethead's hands and a chance to grab his rubber chicken (lulz). :)

Posted by Shade

Hah, the dates on the sign ****ed me up and I was thinkin', "hmm, looks like you're gonna be a few weeks late to that show."

I went up front for an AFI show and almost got the **** beat out of me before I realised what was going on. That ended my love affair with the stage right there. Totally didn't expect that at the time.

Posted by G-Sides

ahaha :( i just get elbowed a lot cuz i'm mofuckin 5'5". but when i don't feel like getting kicked and headbutted and shit, the front is where i always am (and in a way, the most fun to try to get to). me and some buds got our tails beat trying to get to the front when we saw Converge. good times 8-)

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Converge actually wasn't that bad in terms of crowd. Which honestly really surprised me. I stood back the whole time just in case too and nothing really happened. Wanted to see some kids get beat up.

Posted by G-Sides

we ended up kicking a lot of ass (or what ass we could kick). scene city man. like we had kids who were getting on all 4's and letting others launch off of them to try to get to the stage, but of course they never made it and just ended up being knees raining down upon our little heads. after about the 3rd leg to the back of my head me and my asian-friend-with-unusually-long-fingernails started pulling down the crowd surfers :/

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

That's totally what I expected, especially in this town. I mean, we even host the scene festival here so there's a lot of those ****ing kids around. But, I was pleasantly surprised. Though it was also right after You Fail Me shipped, and a lot of kids seemed to be down on that album, so maybe that had something to do with it, idk.

If it's anything like their other live shows, the lighting will be pretty terrible because they'll have a ragged black cloth draped across behind them that makes them appear shadowy. You'll also get to see Neige's somewhat rare witch corpsepaint and get-up.

However, they sound great from the videos that I've seen, and Neige and Famine trade vocals way more, which is part of why I like them so much. :)

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Just got back! Easily the greatest show I've seen and I've seen a lot of good ones.

First, the setlist:

666 Millions D'esclaves et de Deschets
Gisant Dans la putrefaction
Paysage Mauvis
La fin del secle
La Ceserienne
Retour de Flamme
D'un Vilain
Dueil Angoisseus
Le Mort Joyeux
Spleen
Phalenes et Pestilence

That last one is the 19 minute version by the way, which was ****ing awesome. Even though Neige started playing the wrong song. Valfunde was ****ing laughing his *** off at him though because Neige continued playing the wrong riff for a good two minutes before Valfunde finally nudged him and told him. Seeing Valfunde laugh in corpsepaint is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

ANYWHO, there was less that 30 guys there. I counted 23 at the most including the band members. Which made the whole thing unbelievably awesome. Since there were so few people the bands just hung around in front of the stage listening to each other and talking to everyone. Getting to sit at the bar with Peste Noire and chat them up in between sets was unspeakably great. Though Neige is the most timid band member I have ever met before. He wouldn't go anywhere without Valfunde (largely just followed him around or looked for him) and looked nervous whenever he wasn't on stage. But even then, super nice guy. Valfunde is kickass though. Some faggot kid decided to hardcore dance during Sombre Forets and he got a little too close to Neige and Valfunde so Valfunde just ****ing threw him away, the kid ended up falling over a barstool and needless to say he just stayed in the back until Valfunde was gone. ****ing hilarious.

As for the other bands, Kronosfear was all right. The band members were cool to talk to, but their music seemed a lot like death metal to me. And Neige seemed bored out of his mind. Just sat with his head in arms at a table and didn't move the whole time.

Sombre Forets was so good. I actually couldn't tell who they were out of all the guys there before they went on stage because they were pretty ****ing normal looking and just seemed like fans before they took the stage. Then they put on these really terrible masks, but played amazing black metal. I read that they upstaged Peste Noire at the Toronto show and I can see why (though PN was way better at this show.) The vocals and the riffs were exceptional and the drums were perfect. Though watching a 15 year-old girl sitting at the keyboards doing nothing for 90% of the time was pretty funny.

Akitsa started out really awkward. The vocalist didn't seem so comfortable at first but by the second last song he was full into it; falling on the ground screaming and wailing, using great clean vocals and just putting on a good live show.

And Peste Noire, again, was the best live performance I've seen. Every single note with perfect, nothing was missing, and the few additions they added were sooo good. It's amazing how much better they are live. Listening to the music now is almost disappointing since it doesn't even come close to comparing. The vocals were just so good and so much better than on their albums that it's crazy. And throwing the 19 minute Phalenes on at the end was the perfect end to the best night ever.

But yeah, what really made it was how cool all the bands were. They just hung around on the floor or by the merch stand or outside with everyone else and talked. Plus, I got to walk to the nearest convenience store with Neige and Valfunde! Hasn't been the first time a band has done that, hanging around and whatnot, but those were local bands, not someone like Peste Noire who's huge in the black metal scene. Just puts a really cool face to these guys.

I'll post picture tomorrow. The quality is **** and neige got in the way of one of my shots, but the ones that matter turned out pretty well!

loooooooong post

Posted by Omni

That setlist includes pretty much all of their best material. I'm not surprised that Neige is a shy person.

All right, ****ty picture time. Only decent pictures of are Peste Noire, the rest are really blurry.

Shot of the band and the crowd. See? Only a handful of guys. Assuming you can even see anyone in that picture. Neige is the dude in white and Valfunde is right beside him.

Wow those pictures are ****ty and pixelated.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Yeah, dude! Didn't know how to work the phone, and well, it's a phone. But they got the job done. As long as I can make out shapes I'm happy.

Posted by Freedreich

They will make good blackmetal avatars then

just grayscale and go!

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

actually, those would probably look a lot better not blown up to 1200xwhatever. Not sure why the camera made some smaller and some ****ing huge

Posted by Gollum

****, forgot about this thread. Sounds awesome from what Vamp says. I've been digging Sombres Forets for a while and I'm glad two bands I love are playing together. Now I'm so psyched for the show. I'm secretly hoping that I'm the only who bought a ticket.

Vamp's post is making me wet, seriously.

Can someone connect the names to the faces in Vamp's pictures? Just so I recognize who's who when I go on Thursday night.

And Vamp, did you check out any of the merchandise? What was it like? Designs/prices etc if you know them.

Peste Noire:

From left to right, this is Neige, Famine (or Valfunde), Winterhalter and Indria.

Famine (vocals, lead guitar):

Neige (vocals, rhythm guitar):

I can't find any good pictures of the other two, but Famine and Neige are more important anyway.

Yeah, it's pretty easy. Neige will be one of the taller guys there. He looks really awkward, has a big nose, and will always be standing near a relatively short, shaved-head guy. That's Valfunde/Famine. In the pictures I took it goes Indria (bass,) Famine (lead guitars,) Neige (rhythm guitars.) Can't comment on Winterhalter because I never seriously met him and he's the drummer anyways so no one cares about him. They should be fairly easy to spot though.

And Sombres Forets will be hanging around Peste Noire the entire time. Main guy resembles Neige iir, while the other two who aren't actually part of Sombres have shaved heads and look sorta geeky but pretty normal. And then there will be some 12 year-old girl on keyboards. Can't miss her.

Main dude from Akitsa looks like your every day jerky cool guy and will likely be the drunkest guy there. Can't miss him, has a big beer belly.

It had a ton of band shirts. Burzum, Angantyr, Peste Noire, Sombres Forets, Mayhem, Judas Iscariot, etc etc. They also sell all the albums from all the bands appearing. And of course patches from said bands and numerous others. Then there's this big box of CDs from nearly every good black metal band I could think of. Ended up getting a Finist CD because I couldn't believe they were actually selling it.

But yeah, the Peste Noire CDs when for 15 bucks, the shirts went for $20 and I got the Finist CD for $5 bucks. So it's all priced pretty decently.

This is the Peste Noire shirt: http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii137/The_Vault_Project/tshirt_pestenoire_kaslash-FRONT.jpg and on the back is the KPN design. Real good quality too.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Who I don't think I've ever really listened to. If you got some, Omni, wanna maybe upload it?

Posted by Fragliche

I'm no Omni, but I could upload Gris' first album [i]Neurasth

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

sure, that'd be cool. thanks, buddy.

Posted by Omni

The second Gris album is much better than the first one, but the first one is decent Burzum-influenced black metal and worth hearing.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

I'll skip the first I think. I have enough burzum metal.

Posted by Gollum

Why do they have shirts for Judas Iscariot and Burzum? Is it common for bands to do that? And did you notice any other band shirts?

Might pick up a couple shirts there if they're good.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

They just pick shirts of whatever bands will sell basically. Though in this particular show they played said bands between the sets, so maybe it has more to do with what bands they liked. But no, besides the ones I listed I can't remember much else. I know there was at least ten, and three of those were different Mayhem shirts. I only wanted the Peste Noire shirt and it was the nicest one, so I didn't really look carefully at the rest.

Okay, just make sure you get the second one, because it's got amazing vocals and neoclassical arrangements.

Alright, thanks. I'll post after the concert tomorrow, since I've got work all day then gotta go straight there. Wish me luck.

Posted by Slade

Man, vamp's megapost is awesome. I need to get to a PN show someday. Really digging that shirt design, too.

Posted by Gollum

The concert was great. Sombres Forets were fantastic, and had a great appearance with the masks and robes. Akitsa was fairly boring. Peste Noire was sweet; I went right in front of Famine and it was fantastic. He didn't wear corpsepaint (:()and they didn't play the 20 minutes version of Phalenes, but whatever. All in all, quite cool.

I walked into the bathroom and Famine was standing in front of the mirror, then when I was washing my hands, Winterhalter said hi and walked out. OMFG.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Take some pictures? And how many people showed up?

Posted by Gollum

I don't have a camera. But there were about 40-50 people there, way more than I expected.

To tell the truth, Famine just looked like a white power skinhead with his muscle shirt/bald head/boots/nazi eagle on his shirt. With corpse paint it would be a lot more black metal, but it felt like a skinhead show for a while. Sort of like in American History X. But the lack of corpse paint really detracted.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Yeah, he's mega skinhead in regular clothes. Just as expected. There was one black dude at the show I went to and I was thinking "any second now..."
