I am looking for something akin to the form of My life as a king. I like the personal control of the town building, but I find the system far too simple.
Try the old classic Actraiser or Populous. Those're my favorites in the genre, and Actraiser is available on the Virtual Console.
My Life as a King reminded me a lot of Overlord... might want to look into that.
