That's pretty sad and you should feel worse than you normally do.

Ducks laid eggs near my front porch so now seeing ducks and baby ducks is d'aww to me.

The set of photos looks unfinished. I don't think the kids would have rescued a puppy and just left it there, free to fall back in. I'm sure the next photo shows them taking the dog home to keep. I mean eat.

It's obvious that the dog jumped out of their lunch box, and afterwards the kids couldn't eat the dog anymore because it was covered in sewage or w/e. Very sad.
