shoppin' for a good notebook/laptop

Posted by cool gamer dad

I've been really into digital painting for about a month how... and I start school fairly soon. Basically I need a laptop that can handle running chunky software like Corel Painter with no problems whatsoever... and being able to run Corel and Photoshop simultaneously with minimal slowdown. Maybe Zbrush too. I also want to leave some extra processing power open just in case I decide to go a little further a couple years down the road.

Anyway, I know I'm not as educated in the realm of hella cool computers as most of you. So what should I get? My budget is $2000, give or take a couple hundred.

It's 64-bit Vista. You might just be better of putting your own copy of XP on it. Other then that, it has all the bells and whistles you need.

Just because his budget is 2k, doesn't mean he should spend it all on a laptop noob. Plus, he didn't say he wanted a powerhouse, he wants something nice and decent to run corel PS and Zbrush.

Also, Dell fails.

I'm gonna need something a biiiit more powerful than that. It's about the strength of the desktop I have now, and it still has trouble running Corel believe it or not. :[

Got anything else?

Quoting Vampiro V. Empire: just get a mac.

Quoted for truth!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.apple.com/imac/specs/

I ordered one late last week. Got it Monday. 4 Gigs of RAM, one terabyte of hard-drive space, which was the max I could get of both. Depending on what you want, the price ranges from $1,199.00 to $2,199.00. Then if you want the extra RAM and space, up to $2,649.00.

For RAM, it's better to get it from

You would save about $100 there, which is what I did.

Quoted post: 4 Gigs of RAM, one terabyte of hard-drive space,

jeez, buddy! What do you plan to do with all of that?

I got my older iMac about six years ago. Back then when I got it, it was almost da best I could get...756 Megs RAM and 75 Gigs of space. I think 1 Gig RAM was da max I could of got. Now it can't even handle Second Life, and just watching DVDs makes da computer slow! In five years, what I got on my new computer might start geting slow!!! And remember, I live on da computer a LOT!!!!

aka...I get da best so it's fast enough for a LONG time. And then there is da media....I partitioned my hard drive in to five hard drives. One has half the space, 500 Gigs...for mp3's and videos. :D

Before Apple upgraded their iMacs, 1 terabyte of space is what I was hoping da next version would give out. Da only thing I was hoping it would provide that it didn't provide was...Blu-ray support with out having to buy some external disk drive.

LOL! My iMac has over 10 times the space, and more RAM, then my web server has!!!! Is that why da server likes to be slow!!! Maybe I should move my sites to this iMac!!!! :D

Just geting a new iMac made my internet connection much faster!!

Yeah, think I'll go for a Mac.

What'dya think about the MacBooks in general? I think I'd have to make it a notebook because I'll be taking it to school with me etc.

Posted by Jesse Smith

I've never bought a laptop.

Posted by Shevanel

I have a Macbook Pro and it serves me ****ing well.

If you don't feel like breaking the bank to that extent, go with a Blackbook.

Also Jesse - why did you order a custom config :( You'd have been much better off ordering an iMac with the best processor available, and installing the extra ram/HDD space yourself. You could've shaved a few hundred bucks off...

Posted by Jesse Smith

The hard drive was the only custom config. I got the RAM from crucial.com.

Oh, awesome. Good boy.

Quoting Vampiro V. Empire: jeez, buddy! What do you plan to do with all of that?

That's nothing compared to the storage required for all the pirated media my friend downloads and he's already needing more space.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

I don't know how people can download that much. That's either way too much porn to look at, way too much music to listen to or far too many movies to watch.

Posted by Trigger

Maybe all of the above. I only ask him for movies of the non-porn variety.

Posted by Jesse Smith

LOL!! I remember way back in da 90s when I couldn't even fathom downloading a 10 meg file (Think N64 ROMs.)!!!

Heck, in 1996, you left da computer to let a 150K page loaded!!

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Haha, yeah. I remember those days. I still have an old computer with a 2 gig hard drive that I barely filled. Good times.
