Hey, I'm a flutist, and I want to learn how to play things that would fit in a rock band. My town has a garage band, called Sand Trap, and I think if I show them how I can play my flute rock-style, maybe they'll let me in. Can anyone show me what kind of music a flute plays when in a rock band? Please?? I mean, listen to "Start the Commotion" by the Wiseguys. That's a kickkin' flute solo in the middle!!
"...When Gjallarhorn Will Sound" by Falkenbach incorporates what I believe is some sort of flute. It's metal, but you could work something similar into rock.
Also, "Chapter V" by Estatic Fear has a flute but is a far more symphonic than anything by Falkenbach. If all that fails, try the folky Troll Bends Fir.
Just mess around with pentatonic scale, preferably in E.
E-G-A-B-D.
Like, maybe, E-G-A
E-G-A#-A
E-G-A-G-E
or:
E-D-B-D-B-A#-A-G-E
Just mess around with that sort of thing.
If you need flute ideas listen to some Jethro Tull.
It'd make a good harmony accompaniment for the vocals in particular. I hate to say it, but all I can think of for examples is the violinist in Yellowcard. But quite seriously though, just try to write some parts that harmonise with the vocals.
listen to flogging molly.
Ok man no offence but when i read the title my friend was right by me, yea hes still laughing.
But seriosly now, what you can do is play some high notes then go low. Or something like tht. Listen to guitar solos. Try to re-create that on the flute!
