Lol maybe the rest of you DON'T care... but this is just nuts!
As of 1:32 PM today, all mythology / folklore / fantasy / sci-fi / horror / crime / suspense / teen drama books have been banned from my household. This is absurd- so I left this book on the table, called "Tales of the Gletha" on the kitchen table (a book about a goat woman) and so my mother sees it and flips out. Maybe, it wasn't the best literature, but COME ON! So now, all reading material has been prohibited from the house, as my mother does "not want those Satan books in this family!". Great, isn't it? :) Just wait until she finds my sister's D & D handbook...
...tell her intolerance is the work of Satan, and so is ignorance.
Yeah, but then I would have to start comparing her to Nazis... and that, friend, is how you LOSE an argument! :)
Not if you back it up with references and citations. Throw an essay on her bed.
I'm already writing it.
Does your mom happen to be a God warrior?
If she knew what that was, (a cult of some sort?) probably, yes.
11. Thou shalt not read of literature excepting that of the Holy Bible.
"I have these FIFTEEN––"
Tablet drops and smashes to piece on the ground.
"TEN COMMANDMENTS!"
So your mother prevents you from reading books that expand your imagination? She also prevents you from entertaining yourself with what you like?
That sucks. Are you thinking of reading those book at a library behind her back?
I know a girl in the same boat. She couldn't watch pokemon. ;_;
Oh wait, I don't know any girls.
all reading material? See you in hell, Bible!
kill your mom that would be funny use monkeys LOL
I'm calling for another Holy Crusade. Get to work, people.
Did she restrict the music you can listen to?
You should tell her that the Bible is also a work of mythology. See how that works out.
lol. All my parents did was give me suggestions on what to read, like Growing in the Lord: 15 Steps to Becoming More Christ-like Revised Teen Edition. I remember one book in particular had rules on relationships, and one of them was this rhyme about how if you're not married to someone you shouldn't "explore each other" below the waist.
yer lucky you got to read em so far, good lord willin' you'll git to read em agin
Seraph agrees: SUPER NAZI SATAN HELL DEVIL STEROIDS SOCIALIST FOLK DOOM DARK BLACK METAL
I will say that my folks hearing the music I like resulted in us not talking very much for a few weeks. They're pretty okay about it now, though. They even like some of it.
My dad and I have had a few discussions about music. They usually happen when we're driving for several hours and I get tired of listening to baseball games, and he finally lets me play something off my iPod. Then he starts listing off all the things that are wrong with it. Basically, his stance is that music is solely for worship and expressing happiness/joy at the beauty of the good lord's creation. Too much distortion and it's BAD NOISE. All the songs have to resolve the problem or conflict they're written about(if that's the case). Any not-clean vocals are "cries for help."
edit: There were several truly devoted women at the church I used to attend who proclaimed themselves to be prayer warriors- unafraid to pray for assistance in even the smallest matter. For it is a measure of oneself how much one lays at the feet of the good lord.
thank *** my father listens to Iron Maiden, Van Helen, etc.
Eh, I have the feeling, Omni, that my music will be the next thing to go. Or my drawings... if it comes down to drawings, oh, man- that's where they cross the line. :)
Make Peace, class! Not war. ;)
Well, I'm lucky to have parents that laughed the one time I jokingly said I masterbated to Satan.
My mother introduced me to Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Grunge. She rocks in my book.
My parents basically say "If you want to listen to satan music, go ahead. Just keep your door shut."
My parents pretended to be Catholic for 14 years so I wouldn't have to go to the crazy ghetto high school in my area, then as soon as I got in to the local Catholic high school, they just came straight out with it. My head was ****ed!
One thing that I have found that REALLy bugs parents (mine, at least) is when you play Christian - Metal music, if you can find such a thing; Skillet and Disciple are two perfect examples.
Don't tell them about how you like Kamelot.
Hehe.... I actually just play their slower songs around them, like "Wander" or "Don't You Cry" and my mother loves those two songs.
My grandma spent one sleepless night praying for my soul after I said I didn't consider myself a Catholic. Then I got yelled at the following morning by my dad for making her worry. Oh jeez.
About two years ago, I was staying at my mother's foster mother's house, and I brought a book with me, called "Tithe" by holly Black. Its a fairy-tale, right? Right. Well, the back of it said: "Welcome to the realm of Very Scary Faeries!" That did NOT go over well, because the lady thought that the book was bringing demons into her house. Too bad she did not see the copy of "Dracula" that was also in my backpack... :)
Wait... Fundamentalists? The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Chirst of Ladder Day Saints? If that's the case, girl, get the hell out of there.
Any time a person tries to prevent you from reading/seeing something, they're preventing you from learning something they may be afraid of you knowing. It's why the whites kept the blacks from reading while they were slaves, it's the reason parents don't tell children about sex, and it's why Bible-thumpers want to ban certain books/movies from being in their homes. What they don't want you to know? Probably that you have the ability to form your own opinion and not have another person's views, opinions, and ideas shoved down your throat. Perhaps there is no God, or your/their religion is the false one? Whatever it is, know that censorship is not to protect you from harm, but to protect you from education.
P.S. On Vent?;)
I can get on now, but I'll have to leave soon.
On the bright side, you can still read Paradise Lost and The Divine Comedy.
Journey to the Center of the Earth has been banned.
Alice in Wonderland has been banned.
The Shining has been banned. (Though, I would never let my own kids read that...)
You're mother is restricting what you read for religious reasons, but she still lets you use the internet? Roflcopter...
Heh, my girlfriend's best friend and her husband are EXTREME fundies. She *****ed about my girlfriend dating a Lutheran saying it was a cult, and that she should only be dating Baptists (ironic considering Martin Luther is the only reason Baptists exist today). She tried to bring it up to my gf's mom (also a fundie, albeit a bit less extreme), and the mom bluntly told her to get over it.
Have you ever listened to a contemporary Christian radio station? It has to sound like that. Switchfoot, Third Day, etc. "Now THAT'S how music's supposed to be."
All my mother listens to is classic Christian stations that only play the same songs over and over and over.... but I do actually like a lot of bands like Third Day, and Skillet and Thousand Foot Crutch. Some of them are actually pretty good.
You obviously have never read it, have you, Slade?
That's gotta blow. I know someone who had that same situation, she seems to have coped with it. She's not allowed to watch any anime, cartoons, Comedy Central(Because it has South Park), and pretty much all the channels except the Christian one.
Overly religious people like that are usually kind of stubborn. So don't expect her changing her mind about this if you try to debate about it and stuff. Maybe you can go hang out with your friends once a week and read their books at that time. *Shrug*
Eh, not going to happen. I live in a town of 150 people, and I pretty much hate all the folks my age there, and the city is 30 miles out, so.... Yep. 'Tis the internet, for me! :-D
That works even better, okay then have fun.
Hehe. No. Not likely, not for another few years.
I meant I would never let an eight or a nine year old read it! Yes, it is a great book, which is why I'm mad that I wasn't able to finish it. >.>
