A show which I find incredibly good and the show which basically got me to watch other mecha animes. Alot of moments in this show made my skin crawl and grow goosebumps. Mostly moments where they get all powered up but the moments which got me the most were when [spoiler]Kamina and Kittan died[/spoiler].

This is my first ever post in the anime board, but I feel it's worth noting that I don't know what to do with my life now that Gurren is over. So there's that.
After watching ep 27, I know how soul feels.
Like, the only answer I can come up with involves wallowing in drunken sadness now that Gurren is over...
Skipping most of the comments in the thread (most of you guys are talking about stuff farther off than I've gotten so far, I'm only on Episode 7), I'd just like to say that I noticed this thread from the front page, and thought I'd mention that I just started watching Gurren Lagann and think it's pretty cool so far.
Quick questions:
They make Simon out to be the main character in the theme song and credits and whatnot, but they don't seem to be focusing on him much. In fact, if not for those things, I'd guess Kamina (I think was his name) was the main character. Does it ever put focus and/or pressure on Simon in later episodes? I really like the little guy.
Also, I really want to like Yoko, but so far she just seems like she only exists to be fan service and to be quite obviously a romantic interest for Kamina. Will she ever actually contribute anything to the greater story?
First of, congrats for picking such an awesome show.
Well, I'm going to admit that I only sought it out because I found pics of Yoko on 4chan and thought she was a babe, but I have this weird complex or whatever where I can't fap to it if I know she's from something, but I haven't watched/played/read it. It's like I have to know her as a character first. I guess it's mainly because it's not just the picture of a girl that I get off on, it's the whole idea of the girl. I mean, I didn't plan to watch it just because of this, but I was looking for something new to watch and if I chose Gurren Lagann, well, it would be a nice perk. Either way, it's a fun and cool anime.
Learning that Yoko is just a fan-service girl kind of ruins it, though. It didn't do anything for me before because I was missing the substance of it, and to find out she barely has any substance in the first place doesn't help.

I got into Gurren Lagann for Yoko too at first. Then couldn't get off it because of the action and characters. Actually, since I got into the story so much I forgot the original purpose I decided to watch it. Tell me your opinion once you get to see Nia.

I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks that a sequel may tarnish the masterpiece that is Gurren Lagann. My expectations would be high like the same I have for Code Geass. The higher your expectations the more likely you are to be disappointed. I'd rather they have a 30 min OVA than a sequel.

So yeah, I just finished episode 8. When someone earlier said that people actually died in this show, well, I wasn't expecting that. I actually started episode 9 just to make sure it had actually happened. Now I know why they were setting up Simon as the main character, even though so much focus was on Kamina at the time.
Man, and I felt so terrible for Simon before for the whole Yoko thing.

Linko, What episode you up to now and what're your current thoughts?
I haven't actually watched any since my last post. I'm kind of at a point where, on weekdays, I more or less come home from school and pick one thing to do for the rest of the day until I have to worry about homework. I believe in committing plenty of time to any one leisure activity at a time, and don't want to cheapen anything I like doing by half-assing it. So that's why I often come back here with bursts of opinions and jubilations at a time, because I sat down and watched like four or five episodes at a time.
I'm up to eleven or twelve, whichever one ends in Simon regaining confidence in himself and use of the Lagann, kicking Guames ***, and apparently becoming leader of the Great Gurren Brigade. I was already thinking I'd watch lots more tomorrow since it's been so long.
Started again on Episode 12, and went all the way to 17. Man, Viral is cool.
Not much to say, actually. I only got to watch the first episode after the time skip, which unfortunately leaves me at a cliffhanger, but it'll be interesting to see what the new direction is for this show.

I pretty much guessed even before the timeskip that Viral was going to end up fighting alongside Simon someday (respecting him and Kamina back then as rival fighters rather than outright enemies), but still, to see it happen is unlimited win. And both of them piloting the Gurren-Lagann no less, spouting the same triumphant, Kamina-esque battle cries... oh man, I'm so sorry it's too late for me to watch more.
Yoko's back. I like her more now, I feel her character is more developed with this whole "give the children a future" maternal drive she's got going on. And besides, "Yomako-sensei" was pretty much the most adorable thing ever.
I'm lovin' Kittan. I always had this respect for him as pretty much a mirror image of Kamina, even though he hasn't played a major role in the anime. Now, with Kamina long dead and Simon arrested, it was really up to him to carry the torch.
Rossiu... still a fag until further notice. I have a feeling he's going to redeem himself in the face of his own failure as a leader.
Finished 23. Now I think I've been too hard on Rossiu. What turned me off to him in the first place was his prosecution of Simon for no good reason, but his whole "save everyone we can, even if it means sacrifice" bit was respectable enough. I almost wonder if it's what I would've done in that situation; it's all good and well to have a guaranteed victory as long as you have fighting spirit in an anime like this, but in real life, you can't promise that.
And then, well, just thinking he deserved death for what he did... I had to forgive him after that.
Going to keep watching. I basically ditched classes today to see if I could finish it all in one go.
Something seems to be wrong with Veoh right now, so I'll have to watch more later. Instead I'll do all the fun things I normally want to do now so I don't feel like doing them later.

I wondered while everyone was in a dream world why Viral was affected, too. In fact, before I saw him in his dream, I expected him to be the person who was going to save everyone, since he's a Beastman without Spiral power and therefore is not affected. Is it because he's so human for a Beastman? Like Boota, who wasn't affected until he "evolved." I'm glad he reverted back, by the way, that human form of his was just goofy.
The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann put the name "giant robot" to the test. Seeing how everyone contributed was endless win. Yoko bustin' out a rifle, Viral's dual swordsmanship, Attenborough plugging away madly at the canons, Dayakka's "My-Wife-Is-The-Best-In-The-Universe Swing," et cetera. I want to write more, but... there are no words.
I almost wtf'd when the Anti-Spiral was defeated and he said, "In that case, please protect the universe" or whatever, and Simon responds, "Of course, humans are not that stupid." And yet here we are, us humans, destroying our planet, and probably the universe too if we get that far. Too bad.
I'm surprised I wasn't broken up about Nia. I guess it's because Simon wasn't.
The "epilogue" in general left me feeling a little empty. Like the Harry Potter 7 epilogue. Like there was something more that there should've been, something more to give me closure.
Oh well. At least the giant robot fight was epic win.

In the end I Gurren Lagann is one of my top 5 favorite animes of all time.
It's the first anime that made me spine shiver in chills of pure excitement and adrenaline.
The show gets a perfect 10 from me.
You know why I like Yoko more than Nia? Nia's way too ****ing girly. I hate girly girls. All helpless and ****, that goofy hair, totally attached to and dependent on her man, et cetera. She has ****ing flowers in her eyes.

Since I watched the first arc twice I'm going to do that with the second and third arc too once I decided if I should do it immediately or watch another anime before it since I've had G Gundam and Cowboy Bebop waiting on my comp to be watched for some time now. And also as sad as it may sound Simon actually gives me motivation when I start getting tired or I think I can't do certain things....like keeping a steady workout for 3 hours. ;_; BUT FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAH it works

Also, forgive me if these have been asked before but 1) Where does that sequence in episode 1 fit in? and 2) What was that short bit in the beginning of Ep. 4? (or something, it's a scene with a cloaked guy standing in the middle of the desert and has absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the episode)
1- It dosen't. They changed it.
2- The cloaked guys were Kittan, Kinon, Kiyal and Kiyoh.

It's probably him then since he has to stick out more than any of the newly introduced characters in that episode. I'd watch the whole episode if I had more time and if the animation wasen't a disgrace to the series.

Finished watching the dub a while ago. I like it! At first I was let down by Kamina's voice actor, but it wasn't long before I thought he fit the role well. A few other character's voices don't quite match up with the personalities I had in mind, but they're really close. Can't wait to see Viral vs. Kamina in high quality video.
also, this was like the only time I've ever wanted to post in /a/. I was sorely let down and my expectations were met at the same time. people are morons.
I'm hoping Viral's VA grows in the same manner Kamina's does. I've heard a small bit of Viral in English, and he doesn't sound as... Savage as I'd hoped. He almost sounded a little proper.

pretty good. epic ending space battles. though it seems weird that it was only seven years after they all lived underground.

I keep missing the dubs on TV, and now I'm not going to have cable anymore. :( oh well, at least I experienced it once

when I first watched it I didn't have anything close to "manlytears" probably because it was only episode 8. little too early to give a crap about the character.
Actually I was honestly surprised that they killed him because I was so used to watching ****ty anime. Should've taken a lesson from Twenty-Four.
