Is he? I wouldn't know. My boyfriend and I are reading the comic together and I just love him. I know I first heard of him off of 4chan, but I never go there anymore.
He sucked as a serious character, then they made him into a funny character. I'm kinda tired of his stuff now though.

First time I heard about Deadpool was like 6-7 years ago. An old friend of mine was obsessed with him.
If you're looking for funny stuff a little more on the twisted side than Deadpool comics, check out The Boys. It's not in the Marvel or DC Universes, which in a way makes it better because the comic deals with some dirty ****.
