And yes I do realize that X8's Lumine is a male, but I myself find the name better suited to a female then to a male, but that's just me.

In terms of Marvel, start with Avengers Disassembled, then House of M, then Secret War, then New Avengers, then Civil War, then World War Hulk. Anything in there that takes your interest, read the connected comics, like Amazing Spider-Man.
Anything pre-Disassembled is too old to be relevant. You could try the Ultimate line too, but it's falling in publishing and only half or even a quarter of the material is good.
My bad. Secret War didn't have that much relevance to continuity overall anyway, except for removing Nick Fury.

Guess you could skip it. It's a good story, but most of the characters who die in it haven't returned yet, and nobody's ~*EMOTIONALLY SCARRED*~ to the extent that it has a lasting effect on their character.

Magneto flies in to take her back to Genosha before anybody can kill her outright. Which leads into House of M.
Afterwards, Captain America and the surviving Avengers are like 'JEEZ GUYS, WE DONT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN!' and they break up. :(

It makes for continuity and care to read them in order. For example, you really want to read Disassembled before you venture into current comic releases. It's kind of a big deal. You'd be like "wtf why do they not fight together and what's with this 'temporary truce' business" and stuff.
I never had a problem with skipping arcs and coming back to them later. Like Fate said, it's just for continuity, but they're still stand-alone, you just don't get the full enjoyment.

You should definitely try to read as much as you can get. My comic-retarded friend read my Civil War trade paperback after we went to see Spider-Man 3 and he was like 'why is this a big deal?'. The stuff that goes down in these arcs is quite often HUGE if you know your background. For instance, it's not big deal that Captain America and Iron Man are beating the **** out of each other if you haven't seen them fighting side-by-side for like a bajillion years. Goliath or Hawkeye dying doesn't carry much tragedy if you haven't read stories involving them. (Well actually I don't give a **** about Goliath, even having read ooooooold Avengers)

The Sentry is okayish. When he was just a character in a self-contained series, it was a pretty fun look at what a Superman-style character would be like in Marvel continuity. Then they re-retcon'd him in pretty stupidly, and made him a total wuss. I'm not complaining too much though, because I love the little Silver Age interludes.
