Shark Time

Posted by ElroyJetson

One of my favorite times of the year...Shark Week (dude I'm a nerd, get over it)...being in the DC area I get to see all the cool stuff Discovery does for it first hand (their headquarters are in Silver Spring, MD)...starts on the 29th, and the previews already have me hyped...

p.s.: I'm also petrified of sharks and water (yeah pretty silly i know), but this STILL interests me...

Posted by veritas

Yay I go to the beach tomorrow I hope Jaws doesnt find me.

Posted by Dexter

Shark week rawks. I shall place sharks in my avy and siggy.

Posted by veritas

Make them swim around. Kinda like those birds.

Posted by Dexter

Like Raptor, those birds often make me think there're bugs buzzing around my computer and I try to blow them out of the way. Although swimming sharks would rawk, if I can find some.

And man, I miss those Thumb films. Blair Thumb was my fav of them all.

Posted by Kit

I don't watch the Discovery Channel much. I watch Mythbusters, and that's about it. I'll probably flick through and see bits of it, but other than that idk.

Are they coming out with a new program? I watched it last year and I don't feel like watching it again.

It doesn't hurt to re-watch something - you might learn something new!

Posted by Iris

Besides, after seeing stuff like Planet Earth, I have a lot of faith that it'll be both more interesting and better filmed.

Shark shows dominate every time. Every time.

Posted by Bebop

Sharks scare the **** out of me

Posted by Hyper

It's only natural that they do. They are the killing machines of the sea.

Posted by Xenos

Sharks are sensitive creatures too. The reason why they are killing machines is because if they are weak enough to let their body to be slightly damaged, its difficult to recover, hence they have to be aggressive to protect themselves. A lot of the times, they don't attack humans to eat them, but they are afraid of being threatened. As long as you don't have any cuts that would send their senses crazy and mind your own business, they leave you alone, really. Its a shame that sharks are always under such scrutiny.

Posted by Fate

I think it's the blood that does it, right? Scary!

Posted by Iris

I think it's the teeth that scare me most. The inside of their mouths look so bloody.

Posted by Fate

I heard the teeth aren't very strong and are easy to break. Or is that whales?

Posted by Iris

I'm not actually sure. They look thin, but like, really sharp. I guess that's because they're carnivores, aren't they?

Posted by Fate

Yep. I thought it was because their teeth were made of cartilage but like I said before, I could be mixing that up with whales.

Quoted post: I heard the teeth aren't very strong and are easy to break. Or is that whales?

Whales don't have teeth. They have bristles. And yeah, Sharks lose a ton of teeth apparently.

Posted by Omni

On top of that, they have an almost infinite number the replace the ones they lose, which is awesome.

Quoting Vampiro V. Empire: Whales don't have teeth. They have bristles. And yeah, Sharks lose a ton of teeth apparently.

There are both toothed whales and baleen (bristle) whales. I'm pretty sure that toothed whales have pretty strong teeth. Sharks lose teeth all the time, some can lose up to 30,000 teeth in their lifetime. Shark teeth are relatively fragile, but they are extremely sharp and the shark can grow them back very quickly.

THEY ALL HAVE BRISTLES. fact, look up

Posted by Linko_16

I entered this thread, read only the most recent post, remembered that we were talking about shark teeth, and my mind jumped to shark tooth brushes.

Which is way more interesting than what the conversation's really about.

Okay.

[quote=Wikipedia]The toothed whales (systematic name Odontoceti) form a suborder of the cetaceans. As the name suggests, the suborder is characterized by having teeth (rather than baleen as do animals in the other suborder of cetaceans, Mysticeti). Toothed whales are active hunters, feeding on fish, squid, and in some cases marine mammals.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Nice try buddy. That's pretty low though, editing a page on whales just to prove yourself right.

Posted by veritas

Past shark weeks i was interested in the shows. This year it just seems boring. They need to put more new shows on. For a 20th anniversary its letting me down.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

All the shows I've seen are like "SHARKS ON TRIAL" "SHARK REBELLION" "SHARK CONSPIRACY" etc etc. makes me giggle and turn to something better. Seriously, those are ****ing stupid titles.

Posted by The Hate

Hey theres a shark show on tonight called shark tribe. Yet another great title.

Posted by Obscurum Contagiion

sharkpunch

Posted by Linko_16

"Science of Shark Sex."

Posted by The Hate

"Science of shark wrestling"

Posted by ElroyJetson

hahahaha...theres actually a show on tonight about tiger sharks, and only two more days left of sharks terrorizing people on television...I'm all for that.

Posted by The Hate

Ill probably watch it. I need something to do. My plans for tonight are all messed up.

Posted by Trigger
