Wow, I just got FireFox.

Wow, I just downloaded FireFox literally 2 minutes ago. I love it already. But I'm afraid I'll get in trouble for downloading it, since it "contains viruses." (Bullshat.)

Posted by The Judge

Actually, Internet Explorer is at least 100% more likely to give you viruses than Mozilla is.

Posted by drumsticks200

yeah internet explorer sux ***, but I like netscape over all of them, IMO

Posted by Night Owl

Yea, i use Avant Browser( thanks scorpion) because Internet explorer gave me tons of viruses.

Ugh, I have Netscape 3.7 :(, but do you think I use it? Hell no.

But how does it contain viruses? Did your virus protection tell you that? 'Cos if it did, its a piece of ****.

Firefox is great. I enjoy using it so much more than I do IE or Netscape. I'm sure you'll love it.

My dad would have to use Netscape (4.7 ew wtf) to check his mail. Not anymore!

Oh, one question, how can I get FireFox listed in Start?

Posted by N-FANatic

I tried out FireFox awhile back, but I wasn't overly impressed with it. Norton keeps my computer safe from any virus threats. (It better, it cost enough)

I'd recommend FF if you don't have something trustworthy like Norton. Better safe then sorry.

Right click on the FireFox icon -> Pin to start menu. If that's what you mean.

Ugh I hate my dad he's so ****ing stupid he says FireFox keeps knocking off my away message while IT'S CLEARLY HIM. He's an idiot because "FireFox causes viruses."

Welcome to the revolution of Firefox. I haven't turned back since I installed it six months ago.

O_O I JUST GOT DEH FIREFOXY 2oo's

Posted by Ex-Linkman

HA! Firefox is one of the best things I've ever downloaded. It blocks 99.9% of site popup ads, makes browsing so much easier (I heart the tabs ;)), and just overall has more options. IE and Netscape (also many other ISP browsers) are an insult compared to Firefox. But the worst of all is definitely IE. By using IE, you're basically inviting viruses, spyware, adware, you name it, onto your computer. It is honestly that bad a browser.

Posted by -Shadow-

I use Internet Explorer, but I usually don't have any problems because I run it simultaneously with Norton Internet Security, and keep my Pc fairly clean with Adaware. I can relate to what you are saying with it letting alot of crap through because thats what used to happen before I bought Norton IE. Works for me anyway.

"Mozilla FireFox is not on the IBM webpage as a browser." WHAT THE HELL? That means nothing.

I seriously think my parents are retarded.

EDIT: I'm allowed to re-download it again. Go team. :link:

Recently I've been getting loads of pop-ups (well, not as much as IE ) with Firefox, though I haven't changed any settings or anything. Suggestions? :/

Posted by Nizmo

You might want to check if the settings were changed, either automatically[?] or by someone who was doodling. Open FireFox and click on tools, then options and go to Web Features. Make sure if the "Block Popup Windows" feature is checked.

If that doesn't work, it could be an antivirus software or spyware that's causing this.

Posted by Porcupine

Well it says it's supposed to be blocked and I've done a virus-check recently.

Porcupine: Just switch to Opera. I consider Opera to be far superior, the only irritating thing about it is the ads, and that it doesn't like the Gmail site. I had quite a number of troubles with Firefox way back when I still used it, whereas Opera's went a dream all through.

Quoting Sabredog]By using Internet Explorer, you're keeping it the most dominating browser on the Internet and thus, making it more of a target than any other browser on the market. If everyone started using Firefox and it became the biggest browser, towering over Internet Explorer, (or any other browser for that matter), you'd see the same viruses, spyware and adware coming through. The reason you see less in Firefox than Internet Explorer is because Firefox isn't such a big target, in comparison to Internet Explorer. Advertisers and "script kiddies" want to attack someone that is more likely to affect a lot of people, not just a handful. The bigger the audience, the better attention your attack or advertising ploy generates. It's only logical; stop making stupid accusations on Internet Explorer being poor software just because Microsoft happens to hold the market.
"Mozilla FireFox is not on the IBM webpage as a browser." WHAT THE HELL? That means nothing.
Perhaps IMB does not list Firefox as a recommended browser to use or perhaps it isn't "built for" the Firefox browser. Some webmasters cater for the most common browsers, like Internet Explorer for example.

But for now, you're much safer off with Firefox.

I used to use Opera, and loved it. However, it's inability to use GMail made me switch.

(P.S. Sabre use keygen oll)

Same here. That, and I didn't want to get used to new keyboard shortcuts.

I use Firefox, the Zone Alarm Firewall, and I run ad-aware every so often. I have never gotten a virus. Can't say i've gotten any serious ad software either. My grandparents use IE, spybot, and one of those expensive mcafee security suite "thingies" and they have gotten buttloads of viruses. Third party is king.

Firefox + Adblock = Heaven

I've never had a problem with Firefox before, other than it erasing all my configuration and favorites once or twice.

The Gmail Notifier extension is also pretty nifty.

There's a pretty simple patch that was brought in a while back to combat 'smarter than the average' pop-ups, as some advertising companies wisened up to FireFox- the patch is 'AdBlock'. (Found on Mozilla's FireFox add-on site) I've got it. I'm only getting pop ups now that look extremely like Windows security messages. But I think that's because there's spyware on my PC.

It's not a patch, it's an extension. An optional feature that is used to manually block advertisements that take over a large amount of web page real estate. Adblock does not automatically block these items as soon as it is installed, you must specify for it to block it yourself.

The fact that this user said "recently" might indicate that it's a spyware problem, rather than a lacking feature. If it didn't happen before and just started without any changes, chances are it's spyware and/or adware causing the extra amount of popups. Even without Adblock, I find Firefox to be capable of not displaying any popups.

I believe he knows this but was wording it differently.

As you said earlier, using Firefox gives more motive for people to create programs targeted at its users. These people could have found a way to get around the blocking device. The other possibility is spyware and adware, but considering Adaware and Spybot find nothing but the usual on my computer, I'm going with the former.

Your computer isn't their computer.

I didn't see this mentioned yet, so if someone did say it just let me know.

Anyway, advertisers are taking advantage of a Macromedia Flash spoof where they can launch pop-ups from flash windows. The default pop-up blocker isn't able to identify those as ads yet, so the Mozilla team is working on updating the popup blocker.

EDIT: For Firefox users who suspect this might be their problem as Ad-Aware and Spybot just return normal "spy cookies", you can try this:
There's been quite a lot of buzz around the blogs the last couple of weeks with people seeing the return of the pop-ups and pop-unders. It looks to me like the overwhelming majority of these are from plug-ins, mostly flash.

A number of pundits and bloggers have been wondering aloud whether or not we'll be able to keep up with the pop-up spammers now that more of them are focused on us. Well, we shipped 1.0 with the capability to block these pop-ups and pop-unders but we didn't enable it because we were concerned about breaking legitimate uses. If you'd like to turn it on, it's a fairly simple change -- and would be absolutely trivial for us to enable once we determine whether or not lots of websites are depending on the feature.

To block pop-ups from plugins, open your Firefox 1.0 or 1.0.1 browser, type about:config in the address field. Right-click in the resulting config page somewhere and select New -> Interger. Type privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins in the resulting dialog, hit OK, type 2 in the next dialog and you're all set.

This pref can actually take three values:

* 0: open allowed
* 1: the opened windows are treated as popups, but they're allowed to open (we limit the number of these types of popups)
* 2: the window is a popup, block it

If you turn this on, please let me know how it works for you so we can make the decision about offering it to users who aren't likely to be hacking in about:config.
