Book... Reading... Competition? That doesn't make much sense.

It'd help if you told us what kind of books you were into. I recommend Ubik by Philip K Dick, but I can't be sure if you'll like it or not.

I can recommend a lot of books... but what's the point, as Klarth-netman said, if I have no idea what kind of book you like?

I suggest *looks for random book* Under Fire, by Oliver North.

Silence of the lambs
The art of happiness
The simpsons and philosophy

Ones I still need to finish:
Cantebury tales
The odyssey
The psychology of the simpsons
Kama sutra

Is it just me or the the divine comedy a horrible suggestion for a book reading competition? People always suggest it in threads where people ask for books and I can't help but thinking that that person probably won't even have a clue what they're reading.

Well what kind of a book reading competition is it anyway? If it's just to see how many you can get through within the summer, then yes, it's a slow read. Or at least it was for me because I had to keep going back and forth with the translation and footnotes. But an interesting read nonetheless. I'd rather spend twice as long reading something worthwhile or interesting, than to force myself through something terribly boring just for the sake of adding another 600 pages to my list.

Here are a few recomendations. They are all a good, gripping read:

Comedy: A Dirty Job, -Christopher Moore
Romance: The Private Life of Helen of Troy -John Erskine (may be out of print, and if so, there is "The King of Elfland's Daughter" by Lord Dunsany)
Conspiracy: After, -Francine Prose
or
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow -Washington Irving
Fantasy: Stardust -Neil Gaiman
or
Tithe- Holly Black
Horror: House -Frank Perretti & Ted Dekker
Psych. Study: Opening Skinner's Box -Lauren Slater

Read Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov. It's taboo reading, and you might get weird looks, but it's f-king brilliant. It's just a really well written book. No major lesson to learn, no pretty literary elements, just great dialogue and wording and really intelligent wordplay.
