Yessir, British invasion time! Some of their big hits may have been either written by or done by other artists, but both bands make them sound GOOD. Both Manfred Mann, and the Earthband were, and are pretty good groups IMO.

I had never heard "Quinn the Eskimo" untill I heard it on the radio last night. That song is great! So then I look it up and listen to Dylan's version.... it just sounds.... flat. The live Earthband version is pretty good too because they throw in a long instrumental in the middle. I like the '68 version the best though.

Also, the Earthband's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light" just sounded all around better. I don't like Springsteen's sound, it's kind of like Dylan's.

I consider most of Dylan's versions of his own songs superior. The stripped-down quality and his rustic vocals are what adds charm to the music, and he sings his songs authentically, because he knows when he's on about, unlike most of the people who cover his songs, especially the political ones. I'll even take his "All Along The Watchtower" over Hendrix's version anyday.

Dylan's lyrical style also helped to influence some of my other favorite bands and artists, such as the Beatles and David Bowie.

As for Manfred Mann and the Earth Band, I've never really listened to either one, excepting the songs that get played on the radio occasionally, most of which are covers of other artists.
