Hard to believe - HD/Blu-Ray

Apparently Blu-ray is winning somehow. I find this really hard to believe, but if it's true then hopefully Blu-ray doesn't die. It'd really help Sony.

I thought Blue-Ray wasn't going to last, but I guess people like it. I'd be ****ed to buy a $1000 DVD player though.

I thought HD would win considering that it's cheaper to make. I know that may sound stupid but it's just the way technology like this works. Why? Porn, simply put.

The porn industry decides what media etc. is more commonplace and what would become mainstream and generally they go with the cheaper solution. Don't believe me? Look up VHS vs. Betamax. Trust me, I'm not being a dumbass for once.

So I'm actually pretty surprised Blu-ray's winning, unless Sony's found some incredible way to either bribe the entire porn industry (or the majority of them, Vivid for example) or to create disks as cheap or cheaper than HD disks.

I thought HD-DVD would win too. But then I realised Blu-Ray was Sony's baby and wasn't all that surprised for some reason.

That **** sucks. I'm not buying a stupid blu-ray player.

Once I'm rich enough to afford an HD-TV then I'll start to care about HD-DVD and Blueray :) Until that time comes, I'm fine with plain ol DVD's.

PS3 is 600 dollars, and doubles as a Blue-ray. I don't think there is one cheaper out there but, I still won't ever get used to paying that much for anything entertainment wise, besides a TV.

You know there's an 'e' in "heroes," right?

I thought hd-dvd would win because its dvds are cheaper. Blu rays are 40 bucks.

HD-DVD has the DVD name, it was available first, and has the price advantage. I was sure it was going to sell like wildfire.

What I've not seen, though, are the adoption rates for DVD vs HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray...

There's a $600 blu-ray player now. Which I don't quite get, but whatever.

There is even one for $500. I thought they were $1000....maybe that's only Sony's.

Haha, I was totally thinking the same with Betamax vs VHS. Well minus the whole porn thing, didn't know about that part. I was a little kid in the 80s when this was going on, so I wasn't really aware of a "format war" but I knew my family had a Betamax and that other kids had "longer tapes" that worked with a different kind of VCR. Eventually, we had to go get a VHS because beta was so extinct.

Most people aren't going to want to own (and can't afford) both an HD-DVD and blu-ray device, and with these movie companies selectively chosing formats, it could cause some problems one day. Most of us are like Ant and just use regular ole DVDs at the moment, but when HD technology becomes more widespread and universal, one of them will have to win eventually. It's the 80s all over again.

I came out of it at the tender age of five and not even I want to go back.

I find this hard to believe.

I was born in '88.... I wish it was '78, or even '68 though. :(

Anyways I am kind of surprised as well. I would just get one of those upconvert DVD players they are selling though. I don't see DVD going anywhere for a good while.

Bluray and HDDVD being both superior in visual high definition and sound quality could reach the 'empty fuel indicator' in less than 10years. Like DVD that ended Betamax and belittled VHS, I believe a super high definition disc is in experimentation and it won't be long before this baby hits the market.
