Martin Scorsese

Best known for having directed classics such as Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull, Cape Fear, and Taxi Driver, Scorsese just won his first Oscar for Best Director (deservedly so, and it's about time) for his most recently released film, The Departed. This news was certainly gratifying for Scorsese fans.

So, I'm curious. What are a few of your favourite Scorsese films? And if you're not familiar with any of his works, what's the mattuh witchu?

Scorsese is an awesome director, and it's about f'cking time the Academy gave him that award. Saw all of those movies you have listed above numerous times, because they are f'cking good movies!

The Departed was the only movie of his that I've seen somehow but I really loved it. Glad it got best picture.

I saw the Departed... a week ago? I can see why people like it, but I really didn't enjoy it that much. Definitely not Oscar caliber by any stretch of the imagination. It's a shame he finally got the recognition for one of his worst films.

Anywho, his best film was probably Raging Bull in my opinion.

Not many people agree with me (strange, dark, and depressing), but my favorite is probably Bringing Out the Dead. It's not a typical Scorcese film, more unique. When I first watched it, I didn't like it much at all. I was disappointed in many ways. But then I found myself thinking back on it a bunch so I re-watched it and it seemed to captivate me. Now I find myself thinking about it the most and it has been a good couple years since I last saw it.

It's both disturbing and hilarious. It's like heaven and hell. Wonderfully shot, excellent cinematography. While watching it, I wondered "what the heck is the plot? What am I suppose to be paying attention to? Where is this story bringing me?" But then you realize that there is more to be felt with this film then with films that have an easy to understand plot. It's hidden, not for us to realize so easily but to feel somewhere. At least that's what I thought.

I really need to watch it again.

Oh yes, Bringing Out the Dead. It's reassuring to know that someone besides me not only knows about that movie, but thinks so highly of it. It is oddly disturbing and deeply affecting in many ways. Irresistibly noir and beautiful. It's one of those films that's hard for me to explain why it makes me feel the way it does, but it's impossible to forget.

I need to get around to obtaining a copy of it, but it's seemingly so hard to find in stores as it seems to be one of those severely underrated treasures.

Oh, Goodfellas is one of my favourite films of all time, and I've recently taken a liking to Mean Streets in particular.

I liked Goodfellas and Bringing Out The Dead, but I don't know all the movies he's ever made that I've seen. Still, I really enjoyed those two.

Quoting Vampiro V. Empire: I saw the Departed... a week ago? I can see why people like it, but I really didn't enjoy it that much. Definitely not Oscar caliber by any stretch of the imagination. It's a shame he finally got the recognition for one of his worst films.

While I've personally only seen The Goodfellas and The Departed, I absolutely loved them both and would really like to see the others mentioned in the thread. My mom (being a huge movie buff) has wanted me to see other Scorsese films such as Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York, which I certainly intend to see. Joe Pesci as Tommy in The Goodfellas was (naturally) my favorite character in the movie, and I thought Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg (considering his roots as "Marky Mark") did an especially great job in The Departed.

Oh, and we can't forget Alec Baldwin.

"I'm going outside to have a cigarette, you want one? Oh that's right, you don't smoke. You're one of those 'fit freaks,' aren't you? Well **** you."

I just got through watching Who's That Knocking On My Door (1968). I didn't care for it that much, but I can certainly respect it as it was one of Scorsese's very first efforts, and certainly demonstrated his potential as a filmmaker. I actually wouldn't mind watching After Hours again. That one was rather fun.

While The Departed was certainly worth seeing; I'd have to say that Gangs Of New York, Taxi Driver, and The Raging Bull are among my favorite Scorsese films.

The only films Ive seen in full are Casino (which was so so for me) and The Departed (which blew me away).

Ive seen alot of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Mean Streets and I've been meaning to watch these films for along time.
