Well if you remember, this is based more upon the Sonic the Hedgehog comics. While they did have Knuckles and Amy Rose in the comics, they weren't major players at the time this series was created. Amy Rose was still Sonic's #1 fan, but not a major interest as she is in the games and anime. Knuckles was kind of a major player, but I guess not major enough to be in the show unfortunately.
