A Sony rep has claimed to Destructoid that demo PS3 units in kiosks across the country were built to freeze up on purpose. From the article: "We do that so that people won't play it all day long," he explained. "Specifically during Motorstorm, we made it freeze up a lot.
Alright, in Sony's defense, I can see where they're coming from, if the person who's playing the demo hasn't stopped playing for a while, there would be no point in playing the game now would it? BUT instead of FREEZING the game, they should put a LIMITATION on it. To tell other's that they've exceeded the limit, freezing it will make the person think that there's a glitch in either the PS3 or the game itself, and make them not pay for it or buy it.
But he IS allowed to keep his mouth shut.
Think about it what would you do if some *** came up to you and asked a bunch of awkard stuff. The rep isn't allowed to make any negative comments about a product he is promoting. The guy was pretty much an *** going out of his way to make the sony rep job a little tougher than it needed to be.
I'd consider answers to questions about my company's flaw-ridden product beforehand, so those awkward questions wouldn't be quite so awkward.
PR STANDS FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS.
Nintendo and Microsoft PR seem quite capable of feilding difficult questions. This guy would have been better off just flat-out lying than saying the PS3 does this on purpose.
... because demo machines don't usually run on a timer and restart automatically? What?
There's something called spin, which this man attempted... he obviously hasn't had a lot of practice however. Which is strange considering he works for Sony.
It's over, Sony's finished.
Sony has become a laughing stock over the fiasco that is PS3!!
When I play demos at Wally World it does stop and then go back to the begining of the game, that's how it's really supposed to do instead of just freezing the darn thing.
At least it's a step up from something along the lines of "Our kiosks don't freeze up at all. You must have done something wrong if you think it froze up on you. It was probably just a misunderstanding." Although I do recall ken kutaragi claiming that there were no problems at all with the psp's design because it was beautiful, and that any issues with the square button not working were unimportant compared to that.
This guy would have been better off just flat-out lying than saying the PS3 does this on purpose. In this instance, "flat-out-lying" and saying "the PS3 does this on purpose" is the same thing!
I'm fairly certain you knew that when you posted it, but I see others here more dense than water.

It's over, Sony's finished.Yeap, Sony's finished. They're not making nearly enough money off of digital cameras, camcorders, computers, TVs, car stereoes, music, etc.!
Just take a look at some of the bands/artists they have signed, and we all know they're finished:
AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Xzibit, Travis Tritt, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Michael Bolton, Dixie Chicks, Gloria Estefan, Peter Frampton, Good Charlotte, System of a Down, Carlos Santana, DMX, Iron Maiden, Incubus, Wyclef Jean, Michael Jackson, Journey, Kansas, Judas Preists, Korn, John (Cougar) Mellencamp, Willie Neson, Ozzy/Kelly Osbourne, Ted Nugent, Rage Against the Machine, Simon & Garfunkel, Mudvayne, Bob Marley (And The Wailers), Macy Gray, Duran Duran, Johnny Cash, and Audioslave.
Oh, and their movies/television!
The Pursuit of Happyness, Casino Royale, Stranger than Fiction, Open Season, Spider-Man (ALL THREE), Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Da Vinci Code, Talladega Nights, and, least importantly, Seinfeld.
"It's over, ______ is finished." is a long standing joke, probably originating in 4chan. I don't think anyone actually believes Sony will crumble if the PS3 doesn't sell.
Sony is not crumbling. They're a ****ing multimedia giant...but their Video Games department may be seeing a pretty tight situation right now. But even so, I don't think they're going to nix it, even if the PS3 were to be a complete flop. They have the resources to make the PS4 better, and learn from the mistakes they made with the PS3. There is no way Sony is out of the race, not any time soon at least. They may lose their spot as the industry leader, but that's about it.
If something costs billions of dollars to make and you never see a profit, yet notice a decline in interest and sales, chances are you'd have to make the decision to nix whatever product you're trying to produce. Possibly even the department that made it.
I just think it's too early to say they're going to can their VG production. Realize that within the next year, the cost of producing a PS3 is going to drop, and if the current price is maintained, it will begin to make them profit. They're in a slump now; they had a bad launch, it happens. The games that are out for it right now are rushed, no doubt about it, but in time they will get better. The system has a lot of potential, and can easily outdo every game in it's launch window. I don't really think the first few months a system comes out is enough time to predict the next 4-5 years of a company. I will say that things gotta be improved or else yea, Sony might as well throw in the towel.

I wouldnt be sure that price will drop in the next year. Since they are making the PS3 at a loss they could keep it the same so that it turns a profit easyeir ( because it is clear that the profit is in the games)
Yeah, definitely won't see a price drop. They're losing 300 dollars on every sale, I have a feeling they're going to try and cut that down as much as they possibly can. Who knows though, they might be forced to drop the price.
In a few years it would be reasonable to see a price drop as components become cheap.
A few years indeed. But not next year. One good thing about the price is that they left a lot of room to slowly drop the price in the coming years.
Allow me to quote myself;
