Odd Jobs

Posted by Delilah

What are some odd jobs you have heard of, or, rather, have worked? Myself, I have never had a job other than babysitting or lawn-mowing. I have a friend who is a drug & alcohol counselor for the UPS. I'm not quite sure how she landed that one... In fact, that is probably not wierd at all, but I think it is.
Anyway, what are some odd jobs you have had or heard of?

I thought this thread was about the store, Odd Job. :(

I've sidelined soccer games for my city's youth league.

Oddest job I've heard of: Having to clean up the gory mess when someone commits suicide via gun in a shower. Saw it on TV. ****ing gross.

I spent a whimisical summer in San Diego working at the zoo as a costume character, dancing about and entertaining small children.

Usually, this was me, some weirdass Naked Mole Rat Thing, because you had to be exactly my height to be able to wear it and move around easily:

The worst bit was all the idiot adult tourist people going "wow, you must be haaaaht in there" in those g*d-awful drawls of theirs.

You win the prize. That's an odd job.

Abercrombie and Hollister actually hire models to be in their stores, for customer service. I might apply for a one-day-per-week position at Hollister just for the discounts.

I just about had that same job for the Phoenix zoo. I was spending a lot of time at "Valley Youth Theatre" (my vists really only stopped because it's so ****ed far away), and it was hosting auditions for the job. I was, like, fifteen or sixteen at the time, so it would've been a great opportunity for someone my age to have a paying job.

The audition went fabulously. It took place with myself and three other kids because the key was improv - being able to act on the go, like you'd have to interacting with kids in a big ol' suit. At first we just read a script to show off our voice talent (an old favorite: The Stinky Cheese Man), then we played Props (like on Whose Line?, only ours weren't as weird and unusual), and finally, they had us try out the actual characters, all of whom were based off of bugs. This was what made it look like I was going to get the job.

I was handed the part of Benny Bookworm or some crap (not a bug, but whatever), for whom I invented lines, in a silly voice, right on the spot, I kid you not, such as, "Hello kids! My name is Benny Bookworm. Did you know that my friend, Gregory Grasshopper (another character, lazy and whimsical), has his ears on his knees? Between you and me, I don't think it helps him to hear any better, because he never listens to me!" The theatre masters overseeing the audition were in stitches, and I was almost embarassed to be given all the attention.

So, why didn't I get the job? They could tell, when they later saw the pre-constructed costumes, that my fat *** wouldn't fit.

Know what else? I was wrong. Crickets have ears on their knees, Grasshoppers have them in their abdomen.

Aren't I just a sad little pile of failure?

Hey, how's this for an odd job? Cleaning up a cruise ship which had 700 passengers who fell victim to the stomach virus while on board. It just happened recently with a ship run by Princess Cruiselines. She'll need a ton of royal flushes after that voyage. Frankly, I'd rather clean up someone's brains off the shower tile than hundreds of little puddles of vomit and diarrhea.

I work in escort at the hospital and my job is to go tag along with somebody to go bring medicine to another unit, or discharge a patient.

Last summer, I climbed cell phone towers and put up new antennas in the rain. In Washington, light rain means torrential down pour. It was a great job with the most amazing views.

I climb those sorts of towers for recreation, so it's safe to presume I wouldn't mind having that sort of job.

It's really super fun...there is a danger involved. I think it was rated in the top ten most dangerous jobs but I still liked it.

A friend of mine builds and maintains cell towers in Maine. His parents own the company, I believe. He always said he liked the view from the top, too.
