I wasn't even aware of this. That sucks. I was hoping I'd be able to get rid of my PS2 if I ever got myself a PS3.
wow that is not good. this is the first time i have heard this, yet i am still buying it. i will just duct tape both my ps2 and ps3 together. make it double layered lol :P. go sony! w00t!

Same thing with Xbox 360, isn't it? It only plays certain Xbox games. My friend was gonna trade in his Xbox and put up some cash for a 360 until he found this out.
Difference being that people knew the 360 wouldn't be able to play all the old Xbox games. They specifically said "big titles" while, if I recall correctly, Sony said all games would be BC.
Except, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 can't play quite a few 'big titles' either, such as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy, apparently.
update!! Sony is making downloadable patches, so eventually the PS3 will be 100% backwards compatible.
