I'd noticed recently on commercials that McDonalds had begun to feature Mario toys. Being the materialistic loser I am, I resolve to buy a "big kids meal" now and then to get a few of them, just for laughs. Afterall, a guy who has Sonic McDonalds toys from when he was four or five has to continue his legacy.
So I buy I meal once while I'm out and feeling just a little hungry. The toy I get is Yoshi, who is squatting and facing his mouth upward, holding a spherical object in his jaws. If you press your foot on the tab just in front of him, his tongue launches outward and sends the spherical object into the air.
Is this sphere an egg? No.
Is this sphere a fruit? No.
It's a baseball.
Instead of taking something from the Mario universe and applying it to the toy to make it interesting and actually appealing to Mario fans, they make it a baseball so it seems like it's more "active." What's more, instead of the usual stupid but funny puzzles and games on my happy meal bag, there are a bunch of "challenges:" ride your bike up a hill five times, do ten push-ups, see how far you can jump, et cetera.
Is any kid going to be more active because of this crap? No. But because they have to sell out to public interests, they can't just let a toy be a toy anymore.
... Needless to say, I put spots all over the plastic baseball with a green Sharpie.
