Sega's superiority over other console manufacturers is pretty much an established fact. Just because people didn't accept that superiority doesn't mean that it wasn't a wholly accurate thing to say.

Totally, that's why they failed to make a profit for about 10 years straight!


Both Sega and Nintendo were responsible for some pretty cheap advertising (Sega started it). At one point Nintendo made fun of Sega's slogan with "To be this good will take Sega ageS".

Are we bringing in the consumer to decide objective quality?

Consumers like punk, consumers are worthless.

Sega had the best systems and the best games for their systems. The only deviation was the whole "saturn" thing, in which Nintendo and Sony had their 1-up with their respective systems.

Sega was done in by biased media people (PS2's superiority (and XBox and GC's for that matter) was completely a lie) and people who didn't like quality games.

Sega is the equivalent of quality, and that's simply an objective evaluation.

I'm willing to bet the general populace is more objective than a single Sega fan.

PS2 is clearly a more powerful platform than Dreamcast.

Sega was done in by infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America; by releasing 2 systems at once and positioning them against eachother; by utterly failing to obtain any understanding of the handheld market or provide their handheld system with any decent games; by releasing a system that was obsolete before launch; by spending millions on unreleased games; by creating a system that tried to do absolutely everything (apart from gain Sega a profit, obviously) at a time when people were enjoying their current systems and failing to do anything better than the systems people were looking forward to; and finally, by generally being the single worst run business in the history of the videogames industry.

When it released against the Dreamcast it was an incredibly inferior product. If you're talking in terms of hardware power then I'd admit that the PS2 had better looking and sounding games in 2005, but it was pretty much the same before then.

Well, considering the Dreamcast was a fantastic value with great games from the start in 1999 that sold like hotcakes I'm going to have to disagree with you. What killed the Dreamcast was not bad marketing, bad harwardware or software, it was the *hype* for these "better" systems (PS2, Xbox, GC) that did Sega in.

And all three failed on their promise except for a slight bump in graphics quality. Sure, now that they've been released for a longer time they can brag about being better, but that's only because of Sega's early exit.

The Dreamcast was a beacon of quality that, pound for pound, the other consoles in the generation simply couldn't muster. Sega pioneered the online market (and Saturn's and NES's stuff really doesn't count) and provided awesome peripherial games (Sega Bass Fishing, Seaman, Typing of the Dead) as well as some of the best multiplayer experiences you could have (Power stone which is superior to Smash Bros., Armada which is the greatest action RPG of all time, Ooga Booga, the most underrated party game of all time) and simply great games (Crazy Taxi series, Soul calibur,

Can you name a console with better quirky games? With better peripherial games? With better RPGS? With better online games? With better adventure epics? I mean, in terms of pound for pound, it's impossible not to go with the dreamcast.

Heck, even the Dreamcast ports were special games (Spider-man, Rayman 2, Omikron: The Nomad's soul).

The Dreamcast was passed over in hopes for better quality but it didn't happen with those consoles until YEARS into their lifespan. It was a case where the consumers were stupid, plain and simple stupid, and the "objective" media bought into crap.

Some of Sega's best advertising (or at least most entertaining) came in the form of Sega Saturn TV commercials starring the company's late salesman and all-around super human studdly guy known as Segata Sanshiro.
Segata's technique was to go around and beat people up mercilessly if they were not playing their Sega Saturn. The commercials for the most part "over-the-top" and comical.
Unfortunately, these ads never made it outside of Japan. Rest assured if they did, Sega and the Saturn would have easily prevailed (because no one would have dared to oppose the mighty Segata Sanshiro).
