Decent indie bands

Posted by Viccica

So recently I've been getting into some indie music. Wondering if anyone could offer any decent suggestions. Preferably not the more ****ty, trendy bands. =p

Posted by Klarth

Indie as in the misnamed watered down pop-rock genre featuring RIAA-loving bands such as The Arctic-Cold Killer Monkeys, or actual independent bands who publish their music online?

CLARIFY

Iron and Wine and the Protomen.

also: in before "indie isn't a genre RAAAGH!"

Posted by Viccica

Actual indepent bands that publish their music online.

Posted by Klarth

Oh.

In which case, what kind of actual genre are you looking for? :p

Posted by Viccica

Probably leaning more towards the rock or metal genre. Nothing pop-ish. I'm a big fan of good drumming, so that'd be a plus too.

Always a number-one recommendation :) No other bands come to mind right now...

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

I can list a bunch of black metal if you're into that stuff.

Posted by Stalolin

The Decemberists
Sleater-Kinney
Of Montreal
Bloc Party
Broken Social Scene
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
The Flaming Lips
Metric

BANDS THAT HAVE BEEN CONISDERED INDIE AT ONE POINT IN TIME OR STILL ARE.

I recommend The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, Broken Social Scene, and Metric.

THE RACONTEURS!

They're one of my favorite bands. :D

Posted by Stalolin

Also, listen to tapes n tapes, because they're the best band ever.

Posted by Viccica

Ah. Bloc Party. I'm a big fan of them. One of my favourite bands currently.

Thanks for the recomendations. I'll be sure to have myself a listen.

Posted by Porcupine

If you like Bloc Party I'd try out The Fratellis. Maybe the Zutons.

Only until recently did the Artic Monekys stop being completely independant if I'm not mistaken. They managed to play at Reading Festival 2005 without being signed, where fans attending their set alreayd knew their lyrics. After a year of being approched by record labels (where the band can be quoted on saying something like "we got this far without them. we dont need them" they finally signed to a small name business where the prodecer only invests in bands he personally likes, rather than hunting a profitable newcomer. Natrually after getting as far as music festivals I guess its time to start getting a record out. Dont be so hard to bash without full knowledge.

Neutral Milk Hotel.

Metric, Garbage, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Le Tigre, Adult. All I can think of right now.

Posted by Arwon

I miss the old garagey sounding Le Tigre.

My My Metrocard!

Posted by Lord of Spam

NMH sounds like poo and sucks nuts.

Les Savy Fav, however, are pure awesomeness in musical form.

I SWEAR YOU AND ME ARE TWINS OR SOMETHING!

Posted by Philsdad

If you want something different, try out a few Balkan/gypsy bands. I'd recommend:

Besh o Drom
The Toids
Taraf de Haidouks
Danubius
Fishtank Ensemble

Posted by Slade

Idk, I personally like stuff like:

Ratatat
Black Bear(www.myspace.com/blackbear -sorry, it's the only place I know where you can hear it)

The Robot Ate Me is "decent."

Posted by Stalolin

I'd also like to recommend British Sea Power. Can't believe I forgot them. :(

Posted by Slade

Hurra Torpedo rocks hard. Youtube it for some videos.

Posted by Hyper

Rooney, though I don't know if they're indie or not. A girl I know is into them and she generally likes "indie" music so it's a possibility.

Quoting Stalolin: The Decemberists
Sleater-Kinney
Bloc Party
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
The Flaming Lips

None of these are remotely indie, you weirdo.

Also, while the Arctic Monkeys may not have had a label, they had an agent. It was a carefully marketed ploy to get them into the minds of everyone, not just that they were on myspace and people liked them.

They also suck.

Anyway, I'd recommend:
The Steinways
Tommy Kelly, Age 6, Is a Jerk
Killola.

Posted by Viccica

I don't know if it's been mentioned here thus far, but I found a band recently called Protest the Hero that I thought was decent.

Oh. And Neutral Milk Hotel sucks.

Posted by Hyper

Protest the Hero are okay, I guess. I saw one of their cd's at Best Buy.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Yeah, PtH is actually pretty **** good. Forgot they were on an "indie lable"

Anywho, I suggest looking into the Post-Rock genre. Tons of fantastic indie bands.

Posted by Viccica

Sorry, no. I'm not into emo.

At all.

Posted by Klarth

Oh, hey, does Ulver count? You know, considering Garm has his own record label and all.
