Me doin some community service out in Kinville. Our rifle company voulentered to clean up a beach and pier area

This is me inside the remnants of a Japanese Tunnel/ Fortification system left over from the battle of Okinawa during WWII. The tunnel is massive, complete with billeting rooms, a hospital, and armory. Durin the battle Marines from the 2nd Mar. Div. cut the fortifications off from supply and systematically smoked most of the japanese out of the tunnels with flamethrowers and satchel charges, after about a week, the commanding officer from the Japanese Garrison came out of the tunnel system with a white flag, not to surrender, but to ask the Marines for a Favor. The Japanese officer admitted defeat, but insisted he would not surrender, he asked for a cease fire so his staff and remaining defenders could take their own lives. The Marines were happy to oblige, and over the course of the following hour the officers ceremonily disembowled themselves, and the remaining 300 Japanese troops began killing themselves in groups with handgrenades in the tunnel system. It is said that after each explosion the Marines were heard cheering. This room was filled with dead Japanese and pieces of shrapnel after the battle.

This is a picture of me and my best friend Mike right before we deployed. We were lucky to score a double date with two girls we knew back from highschool one week before we deployed, so we decided to get all dressed up and make use of our uniforms. My buddy is currently serving in Falluja. I am on the right with the aviators on.
