"You know that if your head is disconnected from your body, for a short enough amount of time, you're still conscious? That's what happened to a guy a couple hundred years ago in France. He was sentenced to death for cheating on the duke's wife, and was excecuted by guillotine shortly after. The blade cut his head off, and as his head rolled onto the ground, he saw the duke's wife, who was also at the excecution, and winked. The duke then took this guy's head, put it back on his body, and cut it off again. So he got excecuted twice."- R.C. Collins as played by Phil Hendrie

"Everyone has a gripping stranger in their lives, Andy, a stranger who unwittingly possesses a bizarre hold over you. Maybe it's the kid in cut-offs who mows your lawn or the woman wearing white shoulders who stamps your book at the library - a stranger who, if you were to come home and find a message from them on your answering machine saying, "Drop everything. I love you. Come away with me now to Florida," you'd follow them."

"In the end, I think the relationships that survive in this world are the ones where the two people can finish each other's sentences. Forget drama and torrid sex and the clash of opposites. Give me banter any day of the week."

"Our achievements may make us interesting...but our darkness makes us lovable."

"And then I felt sad because I realized that once people are broken in certain ways, they can't ever be fixed, and this is something nobody ever tells you when you are young and it never fails to surprise you as you grow older and you see the people in your life break one by one. You wonder when your turn is going to be, or if it's already happened."

Some Douglas Coupland passages I really really like. He has a way of putting thoughts that you've had for years into crystal clarity in a few brief sentences.

These are my favorite quotes from my favorite show, "The Wonder Years". Everytime I think about growing up, so many of these come to mind. I remember I made a thread just about these quotes. I'll make another post with some more of my favorites, but here are my favorites from this show.

"Maybe we both realized that growing up doesn't have to be so much a straight line as a series of advances and retreats."

"When you're a little kid, you're a little bit of everything. Artist, scientist, athlete, scholar... Sometimes it seems like growing up is the process of giving those things up. One by one. I guess we all have one thing we regret giving up. One thing we really miss. That we gave up because we were too lazy or, we couldn't stick it out or, because we were afraid."

^ That one always resonated in my head. I remember the episode it came from so vividly, and the darkness falling and "Canon" playing as he rode down the street, with the omnicient voice saying that.

"All our young lives we search for someone to love. Someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope... all the while wondering if somewhere, somehow, there's someone perfect... who might be searching for us."

^ Lately I've been thinking of that quote too.

"I hadn't noticed what a beautiful night it was - lit by starlight. The world smelled clear and clean. For a minute, I didn't feel like a kid anymore. But for the first time in a long time... I felt young."

^ This summer has made me feel this way a lot, it's like im 17, but I just don't want to grow up. All these crazy summer nights I've been having, adventure, excitement, the beach, the joyrides, the city, the moonlight... I just don't want it to end.

"I never knew until that moment how much it could hurt to lose something you never really had."

^ This doesn't even need an explanation. I think many of us have felt this way at one point.

"Growing up is never easy. You hold on to things that were. You wonder what's to come. But that night, I think we knew it was time to let go of what had been, and look ahead to what would be. Other days. New days. Days to come. The thing is, we didn't have to hate each other for getting older. We just had to forgive ourselves...for growing up."

^ This just really meant a lot to me. A great growing up quote.

"Love makes you do funny things. It makes you proud. It makes you sorry. That night we talked. About life. About our times together. Maybe we weren't the same two kids we had once been. But some things never change. Some things last. And even though I didn't know what was going to happen to us, or where we were going. I just knew I couldn't let her out of my life."

^ This quote is an interesting one to me, because sometimes it feels that it's hard to have that person in your life, and to know things aren't the same. If you've ever had a friend like this, I think this one would hit you.

"But the thing is, that was all we did. Maybe it was happening too fast. Maybe we wanted to hold on to what we had. Or maybe we both knew there were other things we had to find before we found each other. All we really knew for sure was, as we sat there, looking out over the lights of the town where we had grown up together, it all felt right. It all felt...perfect."

^ This one just means a lot to me for personal reasons.

"There are times in a young life when you have to do something for yourself. When you have to stand up for what you believe in. When the world has closed the door on adventure. And your only choice is to bust out."

^ I feel this a lot. Sometimes I'm just tired of routine. Sometimes, you just need to do something on impulse, for you.

"The hardest part of growing up is having the ones you've always turned to, turn to you."

^No explanation needed

"One thing a kid learns growing up, is that life is a series of risks. It's a cause-and-effect relationship. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Still, with the proper guidance, we learn to deal with the risks. And pretty soon, we set out into the world sure in our options, confident of our choices. Until, that is eleventh-grade. The year of decisions."

^ I felt this way this year. 11th grade, very hard year for me. Life is about a series of risks.

I dunno, I think this will turn out to be a long long post, and I know a lot of you guys probably wont read it because sometimes I see posters type tldr, and skip it, but these are quotes that mean something to me. I hope I didn't go off topic.

"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process they do not become a monster. And when you look long into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you." -Friedrich Nietzsche

I've pretty much lived my life by this quote ever since I read it.

I see that Nietzsche quote get repeated a lot, but I've never been able to figure out what it's supposed to mean. Could one of its fans perhaps tell me what *they* think it's saying?

Posted by Klarth

"If you're fighting against something you oppose, make sure you do not become what you are fighting against." In essence, be reasonable, don't let your opinions sway you too much, and more over all don't be a hypocrite.

I'm the type of person that is charitable and friendly. I like to help people in their time of need, regardless of the calibur or importance. Because of my general performance in things like work or school, I seem to be hated or envied by others. Often, in my personality past, I would lower my performance so they would find me more acceptable. Now, with newfound confidence (or something close to it), I don't care anymore if people give me bad looks because of my recommendations of the people I help. I shouldn't have to lower myself. I will not be them.

The second part of the quote, to me, has some kind of poetic meaning. When I think about that part of the quote, I imagine myself as a child, looking down a well. This well is dangerous for children. They could very well fall in. This well is bad. The well, in my thoughts, encompasses everything bad that I should stay away from. For some reason, though I don't go near the well, it is there, and my curiosity is, too. I'm rational enough not to go near it.

This isn't my favourite, I found it 5 minutes ago and was in awe over who said it. Thought I'd share:

"I am most anxious to enlist everyone who can speak or write to join in checking this mad, wicked folly of 'Women's Rights', with all its attendant horrors, on which her poor feeble sex is bent, forgetting every sense of womanly feelings and propriety. Feminists ought to get a good whipping. Were woman to 'unsex' themselves by claiming equality with men, they would become the most hateful, heathen and disgusting of beings, and would surely perish without male protection."
