I have always thought it led you to the heart of the Islands.And I read somewhere that Riku opened the door in the begining of the game.
It does lead to the heart of that world at least thats what I think and Riku didn't open the door but it did open by itself cause the heartless were attacking under Xehanort;s heartless' command.
He wanted that world to be filed with darkness so he attacked the heart and since it died off it went to Kingdom Hearts as a storage space.
