Building a PC, finally

Posted by Poco

Ok, I'm building a gaming PC, not that this isn't supposed to be an uber monster, as the most taxing game i'll be running on it is probably Half Life 2, or Far Cry.

Ok, I just want to see what you guys have to say. Don't worry about the relatively small hard drive, I have a 250 GB external one.
Oh, and I have a 15" flat screen monitor.

First of all, she's right (kinda). 15 is tiny. The jump to 17 may not seem like much, but you need to be at least there. The difference in reoslutions will be amazing.

You have a 20 pin mobo connecter on your power supply, but a 24 pin mobo. Your mobo also only has two pci x16 slots, so if you're going to tun two vid cards (which is generally overkill for what you're describing, i have friends who have $6k computers and only run one card) and a wireless card the wireless will have to be a slower pci x card.

go with the biostar, and go with ONE of it.

You've got an onboard soundcard on the mobo, so thats just another slot ebing filled that doesnt need to be. Not to mention that its a pci interface, which is ****.

Speakers look a little soft. If you're big into music you might want to get a little bit more hardcore ones.

Aside from that it looks ok. Just be aware that cordless mice tend to be a little bit heavier, so if you plan on being obsessed with FPS performance, you might want to find a lighter mouse.

you monitor IS too small. u might as well play pc games on a ****in gameboy

**** that really makes my computer look like crap :(. Does the mobo have IDE slot for the cd drive cause I missed it in the specs :? What LoS said sounded good. Oh and if you need mouse help.

my old comp:

abit nf7-s nforce 2 mobo
amd 2700+ cpu @ 2.16ghz
ati radeon 9600 128mb video card
maxtor 120gb hard drive
lite on dvdrom and cdrw drives
1x 512mb crucial ram stick
300w antec power supply
generic floppy drive
19" viewsonic crt monitor
logitech keyboard and mouse
creative labs 2.1 speakers

wasnt special, but it ran good and played a majority of games pretty well. if u wanna see a high preformance, inexpensive computer, check out this link:

OH, thats another thing. I didnt check what the wattage was on the psu, and it wont let me open the newegg page for some reason, but you'll want AT LEAST a 400 watt unit, especially if you plan on running sli.

Edit: wow, anyone who pays for windows is retarded. Seriously, theres NO reason to pay for that.

I'll be pirating Vista.

Yeah, i'm still on the fence for power supplies. My friend says he could give me one of his old 500 watters, which would connect with my motherboard.

Also, I don't mind the sound. It's just something to get me by until I can upgrade to an X-fi platinum.

Speakers are no biggie, I'll just trade them with me grandparents. They have some big JBL sound system that they got from one of their friends.

My parents said they would give me the 19" I'm using on the family computer, so it's all good.

I'll be using only one biostar, thanks for that suggestion.

Edit: I found a better power supply here, but i still have to see what my friend will give me.

power supplys and ram share one thing in common. more is better. if your running a psu and sli, youll need one designed for sli since it requires special/extra plugs to fuction without drawing power away from the rest of the system. research is key here. dont just blow money on the first parts u see. research. research. research. look for known problems. read reviews. look for the best problems. etc. thats how i built my system. lots of research went into it before i commettied, and ya know what? it preformed beautiful up to its death. it pays to be informed

more ram is only good up to a certain point. After that, its just wasted money. Yeah, you might have 4 gigs, but chances are that two, or even one, would have done just as well. And for power supplies, leaving a little bit of exrta room is always nice, but if you have a 1000watt suply thats only putting out 300, you've not only wasted money on power you'll never use, but you've also just put another useless heat element into your case.

Figure out what you want to shoot for, and build for that. You said you were interested in HL2? The specs you listed will run it just fine. If you want to play games that are coming out now or in teh future (oblivion comes to mind) you'll want to try to go for a higher spec. But so far, it looks perfectly fine. I've been messing around with build prices too recently (before my truck got borken into, I was planning on having a new comuter by trhe end of august:/ ) Internet sites like newegg are awesome, but honestly, if you know someone who works at compusa, thats an even better route. Employess get computer parts at cost, so if you have a friend who can hook you up, you can save boatloads. Its what I plan on doing:D
