I was just about to make this...
When Revelation 22:13 was mentioned, I thought "HOLY SHIT IT'S XENOGEARS 2".
One of the first organizations that actually bothers targeting New Mexico. Oh dear. It's not like we don't get plenty of weird stuff here already. I'll just keep an eye on the sky.
Regrdless, it just seems hoaxish to me, because it is not impossible to make a website "non-existant" to the best of my knowledge. Someone, perhaps, is just trying to get the attention of the paranoid, and they're doing an excelent job. Well, unless tomorrow is filled with terrorism, the rapture, or the end of all things, and then I'll rest my case.
Meh. Looks to me as though those YTMND guys didn't think of this:
OK, this is how far you can follow the "whois" route:

Now, I don't have sound on this terminal (I just read the text), but correct me if I'm wrong. Do they even know about Savvis and Theplanet?
I'll keep working on this one. There are answers just waiting to be found.
I'm going to lol if mis0 cracks it.

This starting to make a little more sense, I think. But the freeshell.org certainly doesn't, because they're the same people with whom I have been gathering access to all of this with (I have a freeshell account). They don't do hosting as far as I know, unless it's some server-side unix functions or something. And when whois'd, I got this:

So, I dunno. I'll try and tie up some of these loose ends.
EDIT:
So here's what seems to be going on. gw.freeshell.org basically is a dead end:

But, this gw.freeshell.org is present in the traceroute for both savvis.net and theplanet.com, primarily because theplanet.com seems to be served by savvis.net with a few of its' own servers on board too.

So, I dunno. Can anyone tell me if those YTMND guys did this already? Like I said, I could only read what was on there, not hear what was being said.
EDIT: Savvis.net and the Theplanet.com are just two webhosts. Nothing special about either of them. Freeshell.org is a Public Unix Server (the one I actually use) and I have no idea as to why it's showing up in there.
EDIT:
OK, I've started looking for anything eon8, and I found this crazy .pdf on Google, where eon8 seems to be listed as a city, along with several other misspelled, but well known ones:

Read it here if you're curious.
Also, just looking at the JavaScript on the eon8 page will confirm that the clock is set serverside, and when the end of the countdown is reached, it's "showtime."
document.getElementById('days').innerHTML=ldays+'d:';
document.getElementById('hours').innerHTML=lhours+'h:';
document.getElementById('minutes').innerHTML=lmins+'m:';
document.getElementById('seconds').innerHTML=lsecs+'s';
timenow=null;
timerID = setTimeout("showtime()",1000);
timerRunning = true;
}
}
var timerID = null;
var timerRunning = false;
function stopclock() {
if(timerRunning)
clearTimeout(timerID);
timerRunning = false;
}
function startclock() {
stopclock();
showtime();
It also seems that those random strings of garbage that it generates aren't controlled by anything as simple as Javascript, because I saw nothing of the sort there. They're generated in some other way.
edit: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=eon8&hl=en&lr=&rls=SUNA,SUNA:2006-08,SUNA:en&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=gl
OK, here:
An MD5 hash of a date and time are then created and stamped on the site when a visitor displays the main page.
The Distribution List contains MD5 hashed dates as well. (Maybe… the last one usually isn’t the correct length for a hash, i.e. 32 characters)
That means that those strings of crap are just the date/time encoded, so they're always different. Meh, seems very hoaxy now.
Edit: I wonder if it has anything to do with this:
July 1
1947 "Mr. X" article appears in Foreign Affairs
State Department official George Kennan, using the pseudonym "Mr. X," publishes an article entitled "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" in the July edition of Foreign Affairs. The article focused on Kennan's call for a policy of containment toward the Soviet Union and established the foundation for much of America's early Cold War foreign policy.
In February 1946, Kennan, then serving as the U.S. charge d'affaires in Moscow, wrote his famous "long telegram" to the Department of State. In the missive, he condemned the communist leadership of the Soviet Union and called on the United States to forcefully resist Russian expansion. Encouraged by friends and colleagues, Kennan refined the telegram into an article, "The Sources of Soviet Conduct," and secured its publication in the July edition of Foreign Affairs. Kennan signed the article "Mr. X" to avoid any charge that he was presenting official U.S. government policy, but nearly everyone in the Department of State and White House recognized the piece as Kennan's work. In the article, Kennan explained that the Soviet Union's leaders were determined to spread the communist doctrine around the world, but were also extremely patient and pragmatic in pursuing such expansion.
In the "face of superior force," Kennan said, the Russians would retreat and wait for a more propitious moment. The West, however, should not be lulled into complacency by temporary Soviet setbacks. Soviet foreign policy, Kennan claimed, "is a fluid stream which moves constantly, wherever it is permitted to move, toward a given goal." In terms of U.S. foreign policy, Kennan's advice was clear: "The main element of any United States policy toward the Soviet Union must be that of a long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies."
Kennan's article created a sensation in the United States, and the term "containment" instantly entered the Cold War lexicon. The administration of President Harry S. Truman embraced Kennan's philosophy, and in the next few years attempted to "contain" Soviet expansion through a variety of programs, including the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949. Kennan's star rose quickly in the Department of State and in 1952 he was named U.S. ambassador to Russia. By the 1960s, with the United States hopelessly mired in the Vietnam War, Kennan began to question some of his own basic assumptions in the "Mr. X" article and became a vocal critic of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. In particular, he criticized U.S. policymakers during the 1950s and 1960s for putting too much emphasis on the military containment of the Soviet Union, rather than on political and economic programs.
OMG JEUSS IS COMINGG!!!1
I have no idea what to think. The date, July 1st, coincides with lots of stuff. It's vague, strange, and there are lots of dead-ends in investigating it, and ultimately, there is no way to find out who is actualy behind it.
I guess we'll just have to wait it out. But, if you guys actually care, search around on blogs for eon8 stuff. They're way ahead of the YTMND guys.
It's probably just a ARG for the new James Bond movie. My theory is that it's going to be a virus. I mean, millions of people are on the site, refreshing, so it could be. Probably not though. Anyways, there's a reason to stay up late tonight! :)
Bah, whatever it is, it certainly is secured well. I did my most convincing social engineering and still nobody would reveal anything about this site to me (made several anonymous calls via payphone, and a few IP Relay. I'm in a Internet Café right now.)
I guess I'll have to wait, even though I can't really stay up late tonight.

I think the eon8.com site is down. I can't view it either.
I can still view it.:( 7 hours left until whatever it is happens.
so what the hell is supposed to happen here?

9:00 MTN tonight for me. So, are you guys worried, sickened, or laughing? Do you think it's a virus? A global threat? A hoax?
Apparently X13600 is something to do with the human genome. I am not, however, staying up for four and a half hours simply to find out that it's some lame guy wanting to see how many people he can hook into it.
Question: Lost?
Which conclusion? There's like, three in there.
The genome stuff.
I'm not exactly worried, but I am a little curious now.
http://unfunnytruthabouteon8.ytmnd.com/
Now you can be worried. If you believe what's on that page, I advise you to do not to go to site when the countdown hits zero.
This sure is stupid!
COUNTDOWN TO E8!
The count down begins. 45 minutes left. What will happen? No one knows. Will we be posting here in the morning? No one knows. Probably we will be though. But maybe not. It may shut off the power or something.
Edit:SO many people on the site. I can't get onto the .com, .net, or.org!
Ug, checked time to quickly. 1 hour, 30 minutes left.
And Phantasma, I'm trying to log onto it. People who are already on it have no problem with it.
I stayed up till 4am for this. It better be good.
Oh man this is getting creepy. o_0
So ... what the hell is this exactly?
Well it is weird. Giant countdowns omg
Plus that 'Unfunny Truth YTMND' made some interesting discoveries. Apparantly.
I'm going to leave it alone just to be safe. Either it is a hoax which will **** me off, its viral marketing which will **** me off more, or its a virus which will **** me off the most.
So I dont really see what I have to lose.
Yeah, if this turns out to be a hoax, I'm going to hate myself to caring so much. But if it's something big. Then I'm going to shit my pants or something. It doesn't worry me if I get a virus. I'm taking off all my cookies, and I'm putting in my new hardrive tommorow

Soo... looks like I missed something... or nothing... something like nothing. Yeha there.
Interesting project.
true, it was interesting, probably scared people to death, and caused them alot of work trying to prevent hacks and stuff but in all it was good. I think we all learned something here today...were all stupid and naive people ( except for those who did not believe it was something involving terorists)
Haha, awesome. I became pretty interested, not because I thought it was malicious, but because I thought it was some sort of neat viral marketing campaign and really wanted to see what the product was.
The best part is that I showed my mom, who also thought it was really neat (but was very skeptical about it being malicious [and I admit that I didn't help that, saying things like "But it could be terrorists!!!"]). She called me at about 10:45 tonight while I was out and asked me how to get to the YTMND eon8 Investigation so she could show my dad.
So kudos to Mike. He got a startling reaction, and managed to fool what seemed like most people (not all into thinking it's malicious, but at least thinking it's semi-important [In fact, I was still out at midnight, but tried to get on the site from my cell phone. I got to eon8.com, but tried to click on "Reveal the truth..." and it didn't work]).
I actually thought when I saw this, "What if this is just one guy disguising a bunch of random crap as secret code surrounding this big countdown just to laugh at people who think it's something significant?" I'm glad the guy behind it was more interesting in observing the social reaction rather than just annoying everyone, like I originally assumed.
Response to rep: No, I'm just a total skeptic. If 9:00 hit tonight and suddenly there was a bright flash, brighter than the sun, brighter than anything I'd ever seen... I'd just be, like, "Well, guess I was wrong."

GRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHH.
Hah, the first I heard about this, the guy said 'some people thing it's the first act of cyber-terrorism!' and my rection was 'no, it's some dude who wants to see how many people he can get hyped about it. or it's a new arg.'
I still was too afraid to be on the site when the countdown ended, though. :D
Boy do I look stupid right now. I really got caught up in it. The person that did make this put alot of effort into it. So kudos to you for doing a good job. But f-u for scaring the hell out of me!
I don't think he browses VGC.
I laugh at all the people that got tied up in this.
First thing that came to mind for me was "It's nothing, just some guy pulling everyone's leg."
