World Cup : Germany 2006

Posted by Big Boss

Yesterday my sweet Germany beat Costa Rica in the opener classic, and Ecuador beat Poland to a surprisingly surprised audience. Earlier today England stopped Paraguay 1-0, and an even match between Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden is being played as I type this. The World Cup has finally arrived, and I couldn't be more excited! Sure, it's a shame Venezuela was so close to qualifying for the first time ever, but there's always, um... four years from now.

Here are my stat-less predictions for the first round:

GROUP A
Germany
Ecuador

Poland
Costa Rica

GROUP B
England
Sweden

Paraguay
Trinidad & Tobago

GROUP C
Angertina
Netherlands

Serbia and Montenegro
Côte d'Ivoire

GROUP D
Portugal
Mexico

Angola
Iran

GROUP E
Italy
Czech Republic

USA
Ghana

GROUP F
Brazil
Croatia

Japan
Australia

GROUP G
France
Korea Republic

Switzerland
Togo

GROUP H
Spain
Saudi Arabia

Ukraine
Tunisia

Some groups are very hard to predict, as there are many newcomers to the Cup that I've never seen play. Then there are groups like E and F, where both USA and Japan could kick the favorites out. We can't forget the disappointing performance of Italy, France and Argentina in 2002, so anything's possible.

I just got done watching the Trinidad-Tobago and Sweden match. Can't believe TT pulled if off over the Swedish with a tie. I watched the Germany-Costa Rica match yesterday and that was a really good one too.

As always, I'll be rooting for my favorite team: Brazil.

Argentina - Cote D'Ivoire in one hour. Should be a good match.

Posted by Klarth

Yeeeeaaaah, go England. ^_^ There are like 15 shops around here offering free **** if England win the cup, so it could be interesting to see how that turns out.

And take that, Paraguay! *****es and their own goals.

Goddamnit, I'd so be into soccer right now if hockey wasn't still going on. But it's some lame pact me and my friends made up.

I swear that the world cup hasn't been this stupidly commercialised in previous years. I don't know what it's like over in the US, but over here you can't f*cking avoid it.

That said, wahey to England for winning the match.

Posted by Klarth

Well, yeah, if you can't walk down the high street without seeing 40 shirtless chavs with red crosses painted across their faces and England flags worn like capes, then what CAN you do?

Posted by mis0

Most Americans are barely aware that it is occuring. It's just not too popular over here.

Oh, and go Germany! Rah!

Posted by Colonel

Personally i want Italy to win becuase im 100% flesh and blood.

Same in Canada. It's not even advertised, actually. Doubt anyone would care anyways, what with Edmonton being in the finals right now...

I didn't really find England's win too impressive. :/

Just got done watching the Argentina-Cote D'Ivoire match. Got very interesting at the very end.

Vampiro: We all know that the Carolina Hurricans are going to win.

I didn't watch it to be honest, and even if I did I don't watch enough sport to know what's impressive or no. I did, however, notice the hoards of people singing and inviting me to their barbecues when I was making my way to the bus stop. :P

It's not hard to know if they had an impressive showing or not.

I've actually been suprised about how many people are actually watching here in the local area, myself. I haven't seen this much discussion over a sport since March Madness.

Tomorrow I'm going to watch Serb./Mont. vs. Netherlands and Iran vs. Mexico. Both should be good matches.

If they win tonight, yeah. They'll probably sweep Edmonton. But, that's all right. Hurricanes were one of my picks this year, so I won't be disappointed. It's just my "Canadianess" that's making me root for Edmonton.

Posted by Arwon

Australia's not much of a soccer country but hopefully that starts to change now that we're in it. It's the most international game, the biggest stage, and a shame we're not more into the biggest sporting event in the world.

England were terrible, and it's disappointing that Paraguay couldn't get through them for an equaliser. Oh well.

Going out on Monday night to watch our game against Japan on a cinema-sized screen at the Harbour. The game starts just beore midnight, should be great. We drew with Holland in a warm-up last week, and I think we're a chance of getting beyond the group stage, but Japan will be very very tough and Croatia are no slouches either.

SOCCEROOS!

lol at the fact that the only goal scored in the english match was scored by a paraguayan player

Iran and Mexico has been the most entertaining game so far... I really should go to bed but I probably will keep watching.

Posted by Axis

Yeah, both Mexico and Iran had really good goals. I would agree that this match has been the best so far.

Posted by Axis

Mexico pulls it off: 3-1

Posted by Big Boss

I found Trinidad & Tobago vs. Sweden to be a superior match. T&T played excellent defense against an aggressive Sweden, and the 0-0 score kept my interest through the very end.

Posted by El Capitan

Brazil is going to take this cup again, they are too dominant offensively and they have the best player in world, Ronaldinho. But normally I root for the underdog in these tournaments so I hope the Ivory Coast will bounce back from the loss by Argentina.

The almighty Guus reckons they're vulnerable in defence. I guess that means if you beat Brazil it has to be constant attacking and a score of like, 5-4 or something,

The Aussie match was amazing. I got up to see the end of it and 3 amazing goals. Bravo.

As for the US, wow, I knew they would lose, but they really played ****ty.

Looks like the U.S. won't win the Cup...again.
Not that I really care. France, of course, Brazil, and Argentina are my main choices.:)

What Vampiro is really thinking: "WHO GIVES A BOOT ABOUT SOCCER WHEN THERE'S HOCKEY TO BE HAD!"

But srsly, is Canada even in this years world cup?

As for the US, yeah, they'll never win. I remember 4 years back when they made it to where there was 8 teams and everyone was really happy and actually started getting into soccer for that brief amount of time. Then...massive amounts of disappointment.

AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM

Posted by Ant

Quoting Arwon: AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM
American exceptionalism, a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, has been historically referred to as the perception that the United States differs qualitatively from other developed nations, because of its unique origins, national credo, historical evolution, and distinctive political and religious institutions.1

American exceptionalism is the idea that the United States and the American people hold a special place in the world, by offering opportunity and hope for humanity, derived from a unique balance of public and private interests governed by constitutional ideals that are focused on personal and economic freedom. It is close to the Manifest Destiny, a term used by Jackson Democrats in the 1840s to promote the annexation of much of what is now the Western United States (the Oregon Territory, the Texas Annexation, and the Mexican Cession). The term was then used in the 1890s by Republicans as a theoretical justification for U.S. expansion outside of North America.

Political science defines it as presence of unique traits in the United States, such as a tradition of anti-authoritarianism, individualism, a high regard for work and private enterprise, the failure of socialist parties, the geographical separation of the Americas from the rest of the world, and high levels of religious influence, particularly protestant Christianity, that do not correlate with national characteristics in either the similarly developed nations of Western Europe and Scandinavia, in Latin America or in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union

Some United States citizens loosely use the term to indicate a moral superiority of Americans, while others use it to refer to the American concept as itself an exceptional ideal, which may or may not always be upheld by the actual people and government of the nation. Researchers and academics, however, generally use the term to strictly mean sharp and measurable differences in public opinion and political behavior between Americans and their counterparts in other developed democracies. Americans are far more religious than Europeans, for example, and more likely to actively engage in politics. Repeated surveys also show that Americans are more likely to agree that "with hard work, one can get ahead." The concept is thus presented not as expression of ideals, but as a set of measurable political facts.

Those who use the term in its loose, colloquial sense may claim "American exceptionalism" is common ethnocentrism and little more than crude propaganda, that in essence is a justification for an America-centered view of the world that is inherently chauvinistic and jingoistic in nature. Historians and political scientists may use the term to simply refer to some case of American uniqueness without implying that an innate superiority of Americans resulted in the development of that uniqueness.

The more you know!

Posted by Arwon

It's a pretty observable truth, although, American exceptionalism can also be used to denote inferiority as much as superiority.

I'MA QUOTE THE ECONOMIST NOW:
The odd man out

America's coolness towards football is another example of American exceptionalism

FOR the next month the world will be engaged in the closest thing yet found to a universal religion—watching football (or soccer, as Americans call it). From the mansions of Pimlico to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, everyone but a few eccentrics will stop what they are doing in order to watch teams of young men trying—usually without success—to get a ball into a net. The World Cup will be broadcast to 5 billion people in 189 countries.

Amid this global fervour the United States will stand out like a temperance preacher at a Bierfest. Football is not quite the non-sport that it once was. The American team is not bad. There are a few pockets of football enthusiasts, mostly in posh suburbs and Latino-crowded inner cities. Fans will be able to follow the game without resorting to Spanish-language channels. But football still remains a distant also-ran behind American sports such as baseball, basketball, hockey and American football (in 2002 only 3.9m Americans watched the World Cup final, compared with 95m who watched this year's Super Bowl). The country that dominates the world's popular culture is hopelessly marginal when it comes to the world's most popular sport.

America's marginality is underlined by its failure to export its own sports. Baseball is popular in Japan and Central America, and basketball has recently become a craze in China; but that is a pretty poor record compared with the British Empire's success in exporting one of the world's most idiosyncratic games, cricket. The National Football League has singularly failed to convert Europeans to American football, despite decades of investment (this year's World Bowl attracted only 36,000 spectators). At a time when the world is obsessed with such icons of American popular culture as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, nobody outside America gives a **** about Barry Bonds or LeBron James.

America is perhaps the only country that greets the World Cup with an orgy of football-bashing. In 1986 Jack Kemp took to the floor of Congress to contrast “European socialist” soccer with “democratic” and “capitalist” American football. In 2003 a blogger even pointed out that a leading al-Qaeda terrorist had been a European soccer player: “You don't see any former NFL players or Major League baseball players joining al-Qaeda, do you?”

This year is no different—though, for the time being at least, the focus of moral outrage has shifted from hooliganism to sexual depravity, with commentators fixating on Germany's willingness to provide “sex garages” and “mega-brothels” to slake the lusts of depraved football fans. On June 6th Tim Parks, writing in the Wall Street Journal, argued that the competition was “born out of cheating” before giving Uncle Sam a pat on the back: America finds it hard to get involved in this game of “world domination” because it is too busy with the “real thing”.

Yankee hostility to football draws on deep wells of both patriotism and populism. The history of assimilation has been one of abandoning foreign sports (primarily football) in favour of American pastimes. The sons of football-playing parents knew that they had become good Americans when they could quote the batting average of left-handed Yankee players in losing seasons. More recently, football has become embroiled in the culture wars. The most prominent supporters of football, apart from new immigrants, are overclass parents who want their little darlings to play a civilised foreign game rather than the lumbering American performance that bears the same name.

If the World Cup is an opportunity for football-bashing in America, it is also an opportunity for America-bashing in the rest of the world. Budweiser has tried to make a joke of America's weakness as a football power with the slogan “You do the football, we'll do the beer”. But for many Europeans football is not a joking matter. Andrei Markovits, a professor at the University of Michigan and the author of “Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism”, argues that Europeans are in a mood of “constant irritation” when it comes to America and football. Americans, they grumble, either fail to embrace the “beautiful game” or, when they do, get it wrong. How dare they turn it into a women's game! And how dare they insist on calling it “soccer”! Germany has been in high dudgeon for months over the fact that the national coach, J

Alemania en el minuto 46!!

Germany with a well deserved victory over Poland!!

I'll say one thing about Americans... I can go to class and watch the taped game at home nearly 12 hours after its live broadcast and not have the match ruined along the way! All I have to do is ignore my Venezuelan friends and my family phone calls during that period of time.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES!!!! . . . ohne USA

since the US is pretty much not making it out of our group (I saw it coming), I will cheer for Germany and Australia and England. Germany ftw.

Posted by Arwon

I've gotta say, if I was a Polish fan I probably would have rioted too.

I put 10 bucks on Spain to win the world cup (at 15 to 1) before their demolition of the Ukraine. I'm feeling good about it... they were the best team I've seen (I haven't watched Germany or the Czechs yet) in the first lot of matches, and were just a joy to behold.

I realise they're chokers, but they're still really talented and I figure they've gotta get it together eventually. Plus, I might as well have my money where my affections will lie after Australia is knocked out.

Ever the optimist!

Posted by Klarth

Goooo England.

Posted by Axis

It got hijacked, sir.

Anyways, amazing victory by Argentina. 6-0.

Posted by Arwon

That second goal was pretty sweet. Surely the Argies have to be favourites based on what we've seen so far.

Posted by Colonel

Italy plays today. Hooray

Posted by Axis

Ghana beats the Czech Republic 2-0.
USA ties with Italy 1-1.

Standings:
Italy 4 pts.
Czech R. 3 pts.
Ghana 3 pts.
USA 1 pt.

USA is still in it.

Posted by Arwon

Gotta beat Ghana though, and on yesterday's form that'll be very tricky. Hell of a group though.

The bigger question's gonna be how the Czechs and Italians come out against each other after last night's results. The easier scenario for the Americans is a Czech loss to Italy, an American win and an Italian win would see those two teams through. If the Italians lost, there would need to be a 5 goal cumulative margin between their loss and America's win. A draw between the two would see the Yanks needing to win by 4.

Qualification for Ghana is simple--win. Or, draw and hope the Czechs lose, preferably by 2.

Italy needs at least a draw, and the Czechs would need to win, unless the Yanks and Ghana drew in which case a draw would suffice.

Finally, the other motivating factor is that the second qualifier from group E will almost certainly play Brazil, while the top qualifier will get a far easier game against Australia, Japan or Croatia. Unless a Socceroos miracle happens tonight, of course... GO AUSSIE

Aussie's get beat 2-0 by Brazil. And once again France has a terrible performance.

i say argentina will win the WC, Brazil is not doing so well but i think they should let other countries win, its no fun that they keep winning, also for Germany. the last game with argentina was 6-0, thats pretty good.

i want japan to beat brazil so they can advance. brazil has been playing sloppy as for the two games. i wonder if they're going to turn it up in the next round, or against this match vs japan.

GO KOREA

Posted by Goal

Korea tied with France, at least they made a score. USA is getting good but i think Ghana is going to beat them, how funny, Italy made in their own goal, thats how USA sucked, they didnt made a score themselves but also the refree sucked, it was a late call, and it was red card, wtf? usually red cards go with injury on purpose but yellow cards are late calls, etc but in my opinion, it was a yellow card. USA is NOT going to make it. Japan is doing good, defense is good. Have you seen Austraila, pretty good.

recent events have led me to think that the Czech Republic will no longer win the WC and Spain is the team to bet on.

No, Czech Republic can still go 2nd, but if loses then its out, every country has 3 rounds, Czech: 1:0:1, they have one more chance, yea true Spain will go round 16, next is Sweden Vs. England!

I don't know if you've actually seen Germany and Brazil games for the past decade and a half, but in every match Germany has been outclassed and outplayed by Brazil. I got my dream final for the '02 World Cup with Germany (the club I root for) against Brazil (the club my whole family and almost all country root for), and we got squashed. I don't want to see that again.

Plus, Germany still has to prove itself against big guns like Italy, Argentina, Spain and Netherlands. As is usually the case, Germany got a relatively easy group to play against, so their mettle will be tested once they face a true powerhouse.

I mean, I know it's lame to blame refs, but JESUS the number of games with controversial calls is getting REDICULOUS. This is only the first round, and 2/3 of all games have had some total crap card thrown (TOO many cards, I think), and unfortunately, I feel that the US was one of the teams that got sent home because of this overzealous reffing.

Now I'm cheering for Germany, Aussies, and mayyyybe England. Owen's out so my fav player is ONCE AGAIN not playing. Michael Owen makes me sad :(

That was the most painful and terrible umpiring decision I've ever seen.
As far as I saw it up until that point the umpiring had been flawless.

The Italian fell over the top of our guy who had eyes ONLY FOR THE BALL!

I want to take this game seriously but the fact that faking and being weak gets rewarded so often makes it not seem worth the effort.

Quoting Big Boss]
If you go to ground in the box, you're risking a penalty for obstruction if nothing else, giving the attacker a golden opportunity to trip over you and draw the penalty. It was a dive, but Niell shouldn't have given him the opportunity to do so. Niell should have kept his feet and bought time for defenders to get back... at most we'd have conceded a corner. It's really disappointing for our best defender of the Cup to make such a monumental c*ck-up.

It hurts like hell to lose like that, and not every ref would have given a penalty, but it wasn't the absolute bullsh*t that it first seemed. Besides, the call that reduced the Italians to ten men was just as 50-50.

Spain, always the underachiever. Again with a talented club capable of going the distance, and again they aren't even good enough to make it past the first 16. BOO! I remember seeing TVE when they lost in '98, and the whole network was acting like the Pope just died. You'd think they'd be used to it by now. Ugh, they make me angry!

Well, whatever. We've got two final rematches! Germany and Argentina faced in '86 and '90, and Brazil fell to France in '98! I'm truly worried about the Germany match, as Argentina is blazing hot... but so was Spain... then again Spain has a history of sucking while Argentina does not... though Germany beat the...

Posted by Colonel

England is domanting in this match, but they need to kick it up a notch.

Posted by Klarth

"Dominating"? It's nil-nil and we've lost Rooney.

Posted by Colonel

Im just saying there the better team, and have majority of the ball possesion.

Posted by Big Boss

England isn't dominating. With Rooney's expulsion and Portugal having some of its starters in the bench, the match has been pretty even. Portugal counterattacks a lot more than England, while the English are hopelessly trying to get a good header out of their sole frontman, Peter Crouch.

This match would've likely been over with all of Porto's starting lineup in the field.

Posted by Big Boss

And thus, the better squad won, although I didn't expect England to hold off los Portugueses until penalty kicks. At least this club has more of a chance of beating Brasil than England.

ow, tough loss England.

Euro 2008 ;-*

Man what a close match. It was exciting even if England lost.

As for Rooney, I think that nut crunching was an accident although pushin players didnt help. Considering his situation of trying to score a goal, I'm sure getting away from 2 smelly men was a bigger priority than stamping on kids. Although it could be argued that whether an accident or not it doenst matter as its a big injury.

Crouch though. How can someone that tall miss headers? I swear he is completely useless.

Had Owen been in the match with Ronney I've got no doubt that England certainly would have won.

As for Ronaldo though. His face is annoying and I cant help but notice how mysteriously red his cheeks are. It must be from all the crying he does. Still though, Ronaldo is one of the best female football players around.

Speaking of slimey cry babies, I'm glad Brazil is out. Winning World Cup after World Cup gets boring and it also means France are defiently improving. I hope its Germany and France in the finals. it will be an exciting match. I want France to win but I think germany may get it at the last moment. Home countries seem to have good luck.

Not only that Ronaldo is a pussy. Who was it that brushed against him during a tackle? Well Ronaldo grabbed his legs and rolled like tumbleweed for 6 miles screaming. His scream was heard. Drama queen.

Posted by Bebop

Welcome to the Portugal football team. ;)

One of the reasons I think players fall over alot is because they are using their feet. American footballers only fall when tackled. They have control of both feet all the time. Football however you have to run, pass, tackle, shoot, defend, clear and everything using two feet. Doing more than one of these things at the same time is bound to cause unbalance.

I'd say most of the time footballers fall over just to have the referree give them an advantage. You see this alot more in the World Cup. Like Ronaldo.

Well, go Germany now I guess.

Faking and overacting isn't cool.

When I played from under 6's to Under 11's there wa snever any fall over and milk a free kick, it was all just crazy little kids kicking a ball and having fun, some being skilled and so on.

But thats enough, I cant be bothered thinking about it anymore.

"Oh noes they scored! Sorry ref I wasn't ready!"

Posted by Bebop

I've taken a closer look at the Ronney Red Card.

I think he did stamp on the balls on purpose. Rooney has a short temper and you can see him going back for the nuts when he could have placed it on the ground.

However Ranaldo running in crying didnt help the situation and you can see teh Ref reacts more when Ronaldo is pushed. This could be what the red card is for, or the Ref was already going to give him one and simply reacted in case he thought a fight was going to break out.

Posted by Axis

They've already explained this a million times. Stepping on the nuts was a yellow card, it wasn't until he pushed Ronaldo that he recieved the red card.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

well, as a referee, I can tell you that Rooney deserved the red card. "Retaliation" is an automatic red card according to FIFA. If they think that you think you were fouled and then retaliated, then you get sent off.

Okay, England has beaten Portugal only once in their last eleven meetings, and the last two, Portugal has won on penalties. They are not better. I'd say they're even, or edge to Portugal. I have nothing to say about B, because it's just your opinion. It's not like England had to work hard to get past Ecuador, Trinidad & Tobago, Paraguay, and Sweden. Also, they're mad about having to exit the tournament. What a compelling argument as to why the suck! Are we talking about being good losers, or not being cry-babies?

I want to post something I wrote at gamingforce:

The amount of blame going on Ronaldo for Rooney's red card is ridiculous. If English supporters are going to blame anybody, it should be Rooney. The stomp on the Portuguese player's crotch is debatable as to whether it was intentional or not, but what Ronaldo did is what every football player does, which is get angry at the ref when he believes a foul was commited. EVERY player does it, and Rooney shouldn't have pushed him right in front of the ref, or at all. It's his fault, not Ronaldo's. I don't see what Ronaldo did to deserve the blame. Now English fans are making fun of Ronaldo. :)

I'm not sure if Rooney really did deserve the red card, but maybe it was a combination of the stomp and push that equalled a red?

Quoting Bebop: Rooney was defiantly at fault but you must admit Ronaldo didnt do much to help the situation. And the wink afterwards is suspect.

I can't think of anything he could have done to sway the referee. Every time the official makes a call the players don't like in any league you can name, they go up to him and start yelling. Has any referee, ever in the history of football changed his decision because they got mad? No. So, do we have any reason to believe that Ronaldo might have had any part in the decision to give Rooney the red card? Not that I can think of.
As for mocking Ronaldo its been happening way before the World Cup. Come on he cries like a girl scout.

You dislike him because of the way he cries?

Posted by Bebop

Well it could be argued Ronaldo deliberetly wound up Rooney by trying to get him sent off which provoked Rooney further, and this can be seen with the wink. However from what I heard Ronaldo ran up claiming to be a witness which in any case would seem more trustworhy. Although apparantly he was not. However it has also been argued that Ronaldo did give the red card. Appartnly the ref was going to give Ronney a yellow but the shove to Ronaldo made it red. Again you could blame Ronaldo for that if he did chose to provoke Ronney. Of course Rooney would still be at fault, but Rooney did say "you cheating ****" or something before he pushed Ronaldo so that could be seen as more evidnce of Ronaldo making things up in an attempt to give his team and advanage. If that is the case than a 'witness' making stuff up could sway a referee. And referees have been known to change their minds during talks with players, but not really with shouting. Rooney was shouting, Ronaldo was more talking.

And yes I hate him because of the way he cries. Theres crying like a man. And theres being a pussy. I can have any respect for a male who cries when he wins, loses or whatever. He blubbers like a girl.
Well it could be argued Ronaldo deliberetly wound up Rooney by trying to get him sent off which provoked Rooney further, and this can be seen with the wink.

That isn't Ronaldo's fault, though. Players always try to get the opposition sent off, and most players just argue back. Rooney stupidly pushed him right in front of the official. He should just control his temper. OR maybe Ronaldo knew that Rooney couldn't control himself and did it knowing Rooney would do something stupid, hence the wink. In any case, it's Rooney's fault.
However from what I heard Ronaldo ran up claiming to be a witness which in any case would seem more trustworhy. Although apparantly he was not. That makes no sense. The official called the play because of the stomp on the Portuguese defender, didn't he? Wouldn't that mean that the official already saw it? Even if not, I've never heard of an official making a call because someone convinced him of it. I think that an official good enough to referee a semifinal game would not be so stupid as to let himself be swayed by an angry opposition. You can't blame Ronaldo for Rooney shoving him, because that was his stupid choice, and what did he expect would happen? I don't think there's a ref in this World Cup stupid enough to change his decision because a player told him. It makes no sense.

By the way, did anyone see the advertisement of Rooney with a red cross painted on him? Someone edited it have Ronaldo's head in one hand and a bloody body in the other. It's hilarious. I can't remember where I saw it, though.

I've always hated Christiano. He cries too much, does stepovers wtihout actually getting anywhere, is flashy but can't finish, and is too pretty. I'm just glad I'm in company now for disliking him.

And pound for pound, the English are a better team. They've got a great deal of talent, most of their players have played together quite a few times, etc. I'd cry too if I played like **** in a world cup that I shouldn't have lost. Portugal. . . not so much.

In conclusion:

Rooney was at fault.

I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about all the English fans who booed Ronaldo in the Portugal-France game and who blame the English loss on Ronaldo.
[ronaldo] does stepovers wtihout actually getting anywhere, is flashy but can't finish, and is too pretty.

You don't watch enough Premier League.

I don't think either team deserved the win more than the other. It's not as if the English outplayed the Portuguese, so I don't think they deserved to win. It's not as if a bad officiating call was the reason they lost, or that Portugal just got lucky. They simply beat them in the penalty shootout. In reality, the English keeper only guessed the direction of the ball once on five shots, one he saved and one hit the post. Ricardo guessed all four correctly, and only one managed to trickle in after hitting his hand. It says a lot about which keeper is better at penalties, and therefore Portugal deserved to win.

In either case, the whole "ronaldo cries/sucks" thing is way too subjective, so let's just drop it.

I think that they should either put two referees on the field, or if the official wants to give a penalty it should go to video replay. It's silly.

I think Zidane probably would have scored in the penalty shootout, so that may have had an influence. But you are right, both keepers were completely worthless. Neither saved a single shot.

Zidane WOULD have made his penalty kick. It might have ended differently. Plus, the emotional shock of seeing their captain and leader kicked off the feild obviously had an effect on the team, which might have been that little bit that threw them off.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

motivation and emotion are a common safety net for when someone gets beat and somethng bad happened. They would probably have still lost. Trezeguet would still have shot, so if all things happened in the same fashion, France would have missed the last shot under Trezeguet and they would ahve lost 5-4 instead of 5-3. That "motivation" or "emotion" thing is crap. They still wanted it more than the Italians, that was obvious.

Uh, that's actually pretty common. It doesn't matter if they never have cheered for them, for all we know they could hate France, so for one game they cheered for Italy. What's the big deal? This happens every year in the Super Bowl, people cheer for a team that they usually never do.

I'm sorry, but I think it's sorta lame. People yelling FORZA ITALIA and **** like they know what they're talking about. I'd rather some alientated clueless ******* ignore the world cup than some alienated clueless ******* cheer loudly in a restaurant like they have something invested.

Posted by Axis

I see what you mean. You mean the people who shout out Italian things like the die hard fans do, even though they don't have a clue behind it. Yeah, that thing ****es me off.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Eh, I completely understand. But people get sucked into the game. I'd rather more people enjoy soccer over here in North America than ignore it, personally.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

I wish it were that simple, but I know that when they leave it'll still be "that fag sport"

Posted by Xenos

This is a stupid question but why exactly did Zidane headbutt him?

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Holding took place, words were exchanged, heads flew.

Posted by Axis

A few other reports claim that Moterazzi made some racial slurs at Zidane.

Posted by brownoystercult

i didn't get to watch the game or hell, even follow the world cup this time around. but i DO know that zidane is retiring correct? it's disappointing for him to be ejected from his final game, and just upsetting the fans. he showed bad sportsmanship on his final game and didn't even probably get a second place medal because he was ejected.

what a disappointment, and a sad way to end his career.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

I just hope people remember Zidane like I will. He was a maestro in the midfield, and did moves and 180s that made me **** myself. People love to mock the hero.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Yeah, if people remember him for "that guy who headbutted that other guy during the world cup" then that'll be pretty sad. A minor blemish shouldn't ruin his entire career.

Oh and:

It was an awesome headbutt, though. A smashing way to end his career.

Quoting Axis: A few other reports claim that Moterazzi made some racial slurs at Zidane.

No i don't think that was the case at all. I think it was the media trying to get a story. You know how they are, tricks and lies. besides Moterazzi and Zidane speak different languages, and i KNOW Moterazzi can barely speak English.

Posted by talents

wow what headbutt and .yeah he must said something really rude to make
him do that

No, Zidane just did a dumb thing. We'd like to believe there was a real reason for it, but that seems unlikely.

I've just tried, and I seriously can't even find a mocking way to sarcastically reply to that. That was just a stupid answer and you should be ashamed. Professional soccer/football players don't just stop, think to themselves "hey, I should hit that guy, he took the ball from me a second ago", and then turn around and headbutt eachother. He stopped, mid-stride, and turned around and HIT him. Moron. Obviously something was said. Le monde has a few suggestions, varying from terrorism to Islam to sister/mom joke to doping http://www.lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-669420,36-794188@51-734920,0.html. He had to have said something. Players, aside from a fit of rage (he was just walking away, so not the case) don't just hit eachother in such a manner. To hint at such a thing, would be, as irrelevent's post. . . completely stupid.

Quoting Bj Blaskowitz: motivation and emotion are a common safety net for when someone gets beat and somethng bad happened. They would probably have still lost. Trezeguet would still have shot, so if all things happened in the same fashion, France would have missed the last shot under Trezeguet and they would ahve lost 5-4 instead of 5-3. That "motivation" or "emotion" thing is crap. They still wanted it more than the Italians, that was obvious.

and it ****es me off that people who have no ties whatsoever with Italy (at work at least) are so happy that they won. Eat ****, weirdos.

You have to admit that seeing the man that was leading them, the man that coordinated them all get kicked out, shook the whole team, including Trezeguet. Yes, if he performed the EXACT same they would have still lost, but thats a pretty big if.

Also, I'll have to find the article, but apparently someone hired an italian lipreader to go over the video, and the gist was something like "you're the son of a terrorist whore, so **** off" If it were me, I would have just cleated him in the nuts, but zidane chose to just show him that he was wrong with as little damage as possible. Considering that zidane grew up in slums of marseille where violence was common, I think he still managed to control himself rather well.

That little italian **** can go **** himself.

Wow, a lot of accidents sure to happen around with often  What an *******. Even if most of those were accidents, he should know how to control his movements better.

I just said it was unlikely, not that I didn't think it was possible. And I think it's stupid to hate Ronaldo for the way he cries, but it's all just opinion. Even if the Italian did insult him, he should have just taken it, instead of smacking him. OR just tell the press about it after winning the shootout, which they might have done if he hadn't pulled a rooney.

Yeah, except that if memory serves, that "little nudge" also included a full force elbow to the temple.

The italians are cheating, whining little ****stains who didnt deserve to win.

Posted by Axis

Man, people find a way to ***** about everything if their team doesn't win.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

I just provided videos as to why I hated one player on the Italian team. I don't like that they won, but I admit that they deserved it. MY team, the USA (and 2nd MY teams being Germany then France) didn't win, but I admit the Italians deserved it. It's not their entire fault they have a real ****ball for a player.

lol, i know.

As soon as the red card went up I grabbed my digital camera and took the picture right off the T.V screen.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

He's entitled to cry. He just did something badass like headbutt a guy in the chest! Flinging oneself on the ground doesn't count as badass, so C Ronaldo's still a pussy.

Posted by Bj Blaskowitz

additionally, let us compare. Open mouthed sobbs, with probably snot falling from C Ronaldo, or normal faced tears from Zidane? You guys are cute with this and all, but Ronaldo's still a wet vagina.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

Oh I concur. I was just kidding. At least he cries in a manly way... and you know, over something decent like getting kick out of the championship game.
