Bandwagon Time

My originals.

One thing that I cannot explain is why I only have records of numbers sixteen through nineteen in Word documents... I have all of them saved that way when I printed them out to show my friends, but I don't know what happened to the originals. I copied them out of Word (through Paint, since I still use the same image editor) and saved them as pictures so I could show them to you... that's why they're smaller, and with blurred sprites.

For a bit of trivia, you might notice that this is back when I used Word for my text bubbles... I'd write out what I needed and fixed the tail appropriately, then copied it into paint and further into my image editor, which didn't understand things copied from Word, for some reason.

Enough of my blabbering, here are my original comics, which I believe I foolishly named after my previously failed attempt at a website, "Nuts About Nintendo." For the record, the only ones I still find funny are 2, 5, 6 and 7.

My very first is an introductory comic I thought necessary at the time. I know now, of course, that these aren't really needed, but as a matter of tradition I include one in every attempt (I'm up to three). The use of my current name in this intro isn't a mark of how recent the comics are, but rather a mark of how old this name really is.

I had a vague idea for introducing the camera man, a Lakitu brother, which would result in the question of who was filming the comic while he was on screen. Cue ominous, creeped out gaze towards the supposed camera. This would be explained by his cousins, Lakiblue or Blackitu, some recolors I never got far enough to make.

An awful spriter though I was, I solidly understood (as I still do) Mario and Luigi's character. Their inner workings and personalities as I see them are something I never get enough momentum to communicate, but everytime they appear in my works, they are quite the same, and you can bet they always will be.

4
You might notice that Mario suddenly loses his cape, and for good reason... I didn't actually have another sprite of Caped Mario. As much as I liked it, it had to go if I was to make him gesture, jump, or move at all. I also made an elementary advance in my knowledge of how to sprite properly: no longer does the ground take up half the @#$% frame.

5
More of Mario and Luigi's character revealed. It's not as though I found Mario to be like this in his games, I just ended up writing him like this. I think it works out great; if your sprite comic's going to use nothing but heros, some of them have to be a bit antagonistic to make it interesting wouldn't you say? It's also probably worth mentioning... those kneeling Luigi sprites were a ***-send.

My idol in these days was not only Dave of Bob and George, but an author named Erifder who ran a little-known comic called Ruby Red (the webpage of which, as I'm greatly depressed to say, has gone down for good). I sent an invite to both Dave and Erifder to see my comic where I'd hosted it, asking for opinions, to which only Erifder responded. Anyway, he said that as little as there was of Link, he found his character hilarious, one that he didn't see often and thought quite unique. Obviously, this series has gone of the deep end, but I do hope to ressurect that character sometime, whether it's Link or someone else... in my most recent failure, Stripe & Cross Comics, I'd have to say it wound up being not only Link, but also Samus. This was the fundamental problem with that particular story: too many characters, not enough plot. But I digress...

EDIT - Remember when I said that Ruby Red had died? It didn't. I just found it. I demand everyone go there now and read it immediately. Any negative reviews will result in an irritated response of "Ever heard of a doctor?"

This displays a kind of comedic timing I would not have thought possible of my younger self. In the previous comic, Mario is tricked by Link when he thinks his plan is pulled off without a hitch. Quickly we go to Luigi, who is narrating his woes to us... just when he thinks things can't get any worse, there's Mario. Easily my favorite comic of this early series, alongside number six.

This could've done some redoing. I left Mario's actual impact with Luigi implied, but I never really asked myself if people would realize it happened at all or if they'd assume Mario mangaged to miss somehow. What's more, the punchline here is virtually non-existant. "Wait, I thought you sucked at that game." Almost missed it myself.

9
In a spectacular feat that clearly dazzles all who see, Luigi manages to levitate a few pixels off his bed. I was satisfied with the arm being the resting point, but it really should have been the legs. I'll note that this is my first ever use of the classic third-panel pause before the obligatory fourth-panel punchline. Also, check out that background... made it myself, probably my first one ever. Isn't that nice? Window and everything.

10
More fun with third-panel pauses, and with Link's noble but sarcastic attitude. Also clarifies that Mario and Link are best friends.

11
I'm pretty sure I stole this three-off-the-bat joke from something... not Spongebob, it was definately before that.

12
Clever use of overlapping speech bubbles. Also features a cameo by one of my favorite Koopa Kids. You'll notice pretty much all my comics, even some of the ones I use now, feature two characters facing each other from opposite sides of the frame. I'm sure lots of authors do this, but oh, all those memorable occasions, counting the pixels away from the frame's edge.

13
Enter Sonic, who of course, must have a hip and cool personality. Naturally, he must make fast friends with Mario, who is more or less turned out to be the main character of my short-lived comic. Plus, hey, thought bubbles. That's pretty neat, right? Got to love Word.

14 - Back when Sonic only had two games on Nintendo consoles, SA2:B and Sonic Advance. Sonic, of course, had plenty of running sprites to choose from, whereas Mario only had two. He really just gallops in Super Mario World, always puting the same foot forward. It's a three frame animation, one of which is the same as his standing sprite, so like I said, I'm stuck with two. Anyway, not much of a joke to this one... I thought it'd be funny enough to have Mario start to question Sonic about his speed, only to realize he was being greatly outstripped.

15
Now Mario's supposed to be running fast, but if you didn't know those were the "run fast" sprites from the game, you'd just think he was being a doofus, which annoyed me greatly. I totally loved the opportunity to use some of Sonic's expressional sprites, though.

16
Yes, here's the switch to those brought over from the Word document. It was really just to set up the premise for the race, but I managed to throw in a joke.

17
I'm pretty sure I didn't find this remarkably funny when I was younger, either, but I went with it anyway.

18
My, my, isn't Turbo Man huge? This was before I could make a stably structured comic, so I couldn't've dreamed of mixing my sprites properly. Anyway, it's just a bit of pointless intro with some blatent foreshadowing.

19
For a race scene, it was important to have these nice, wide frames. I'm not sure what I was thinking with blue text on yellow boxes... I suppose I didn't want to be boring enough to just go with black, but it just hurts your eyes to look at, I'm surprised I didn't notice. Of course, Sonic wins, and with a speed effect that I was quite proud of, simple as it is. I as with episode 15, I was bursting to use some expression sprites; Bowser and Turbo Man are shocked as the blue blur passes them, but obviously, there's only one Warp Star sprite for Kirby and Waddle Dee. They're forced to just stare into space. I intended to have a comic in which Mario congratulated Sonic, somewhat in awe of his speed, but of course that never came.

All-in-all, I like to think that my general ideas and sense of comedy were fairly good, even if my jokes and spriting skills sometimes stunk. My second attempt at a sprite comic, which didn't live nearly as long, may soon follow.

haha! the first 10 are great. good job. #2 is my favorite

I enjoyed 6 the most because of it's extreme violence.

Posted by Alastor

Heh, I enjoyed them. Atleast when you look back on your first attempts, you don't feel they were laughably pathetic, like mine.

A few of those seemed oddly familiar, though. Are you sure you haven't posted these at all in five years?

Posted by Linko_16

Oh, they might have come up. A lot of them were already hosted on my Photobucket account, though I reloaded those so the new uploads would be in order with them.

Quoting juliebriggs: haha! the first 10 are great. good job. #2 is my favorite

I did indeed notice a decline over the second half... Sonic just wasn't as funny as Luigi.

Being extremely bored from a night of no sleep, I added commentary for each one. ***, I hope I become famous for something, 'cause I'd love to do commentary on it like this.
