Dragon Warriors

Posted by Dexter

I just defeated Dragon Warrior 2 a couple days ago. I beat the original Dragon Warrior years ago. Now I'm going straight into Dragon Warrior 3 and that will be quickly followed by Dragon Warrior 4. I plan on having all 4 NES Dragon Warrior games defeated by mid summer.

Dragon Warrior 2 was much more difficult than the original. I spent far too much time leveling my characters up in order to progress further. Most people today wouldn't have the attention span to tolerate such a task and I somehow find myself considering that part of the challenge of triumphing over games such as these. Hopefully I won't be spending as much time leveling up in Dragon Warrior 3 or 4. I'm starting Dragon Warrior 3 as soon as I post this thread, so by the end of the night I'll have a generally good idea of the challenge that is to come.

I'd have to say that I enjoyed Dragon Warrior 2 more than the original. Having multiple characters in my party makes the entire experience more interesting. Focusing my attention on one character worked well, but it's far too forlorn and uninteresting. Having a set of divergent characters with different personalities and attributes/powers makes the adventure more enjoyable. It brings harmonization and collaboration into game play. Instead of having 3 characters like I did in Dragon Warrior 2, I'm hoping to get a set of 4 in Dragon Warrior 3.

So that's some of my thoughts on the Dragon Warrior games thus far. More to come as I make my way through the 3rd Dragon Warrior game. I need to prepare myself for the future Dragon Warrior release on the Nintendo Wii.

So who has played these games? Which ones have you defeated? Which ones are your favorites? Discuss.

I'm proud of my victory. That game was tough, probably the toughest in the series. I'm a bit into Dragon Warrior 3 now and it seems much easier. I keep leveling up more than I actually have to because I'm so used to having to do that in Dragon Warrior 2.

The story in DW3 is far better than DW2. There's a side story I'm currently working through on the hatred between elves and humans. This gorgeous elfin girl died to be with the human man she loved. It was so poignant and it brought me into the game much more, emotionally. I feel much more involved in DW3 than I did for DW2. I was able to make my team instead of having them handed to me like in DW2, giving us a more fursonal connection with each other. I also have a total of 4 team members instead of 3. The worlds, caves, towns, characters, and various other things are more detailed and generally have superior designs, too. The overworld actually changes from day to night. Castlevania 2 and DW3 are the oldest games that I know of that do this.

Enjoyable series. I'm looking forward to finishing this one and moving on to DW4. I wonder about the changes and improvements I'll discover when I get there. Also, I have the Dragon Warrior game for the Wii to look forward to!

I've only played #1 so far, and the one thing that sticks out in my mind was that it was looooooong. Just a lot of walking around in circles. I don't really enjoy any RPG games though so I guess my opinion is somewhat biased.

Dragon Warrior 4 is an excellent game. It's probably my favorite game in the series after Dragon Quest VI for SNES. I think you'll like it a lot if you liked the first three. It has some cool concepts that no other Dragon Warrior had tried at that point, but I won't say anything more as to ruin the surprise.

I'm so glad people are playing more!

Now play DQVIII!

DQVIII is a piece of ****.

Correction. A piece of **** with huge breasts.

Correction. A piece of **** with moderately sized breasts when compared to just about every other anime girl ever made but just done in that DQ/DBZ style that's god awful.

There, I think that just about covers it.

Yeah, if I wanted to see chicks with big tits, I'd just drive to the college campus down the street on a hot day, or find other real girls to look at. I don't need or want an RPG for that, especially a Dragon Warrior game.

Anyway, I just bought Dragon Quest VIII recently, although I haven't sat down to play it yet. I will soon enough though. My housemate has been playing it and from what I've seen it looks pretty good. It seems to have a similar look and feel to Dragon Warrior 7 and that can only be a good thing.

When I do play DQ8, I'll probably want to discuss it a ton, but I'll save that for a different thread, as this one seems to have been for the NES Dragon Warriors.

Yeah, I thought I'd enjoy it too. Turns out, I was really bored. The problem is, I believe, is that DW is such a huge hit in Japan that they really don't need to do anything special at all because they know the japanese will eat it up no matter what. They were of course correct... I just think it could have been tons better if it was made with someone other than the Japs in mind.

But yeah, if this is off topic, then oops. I guess a mod could just split it if they want.

This isn't off topic at all. The discussion is basically for any Dragon Warrior games. I simply put it in here because I'm currently working through the NES DW games. I brought up the future Wii DW game and after I am finished with the NES Dragon Warriors, I may want to someday move on to the rest. Hearing your opinions of those games only inspires me to do so more, which is a good thing. I don't hear enough about the games and from what I've experience thus far, they are fantastic and deserve more appreciation.

Since we are already there, what are your opinions on the best DW game? Would it be worth it for me to experience them all or simply stop after DW4 and wait until the Wii version is released? I'll probably want more after I finish DW4, which will motivate me to play the rest. I barely have any knowledge about the games after the NES ones. There on the Playstation, right? I would have to get myself another Playstation to go through the games because I gave mine away a long time ago.

My favorite DW game is Dragon Quest VI, which was released on Super Famicom and never made it to the US. Luckily, a fan translated it in 2001. A little too late for the SNES rush, but still great for fans like me. It was just a really great game in my opinion. It had all the charm of the original NES Dragon Warriors and a lot more. The storyline is really cool too with some very original plot twists that will keep wanting to play more and more. The characters aren't great for the most part, but characters were never really a strong suit of Dragon Warrior. And if you liked the Class system from Dragon Warrior 3, it is expanded a LOT in Dragon Quest VI. So I definitely recommend it. I haven't actually played Dragon Quest V too much. It was also released only in Japan and later translated. It's the only DQ (besides VIII) that I haven't played all the way through, so I can't comment too much on it.

Dragon Warrior VII for PS1 is outstanding too. Once again, the Class system is there and is built upon even more from Dragon Quest VI. As for the storyline, it's not anything that spectacular, but there are some interesting "innovations" nonetheless as far as story. The music ruled in Dragon Warrior VII too. It's kind of hard to find though and can be expensive (unless you have a chipped PS1 of course.)

One thing to keep in mind with ALL these games is that like in the NES ones, you'll be spending a ton of time in the battle screen. Especially when you are building classes. That's just how DW is though, and from what I've seen DQ8 isn't different in this regard either.

I thought DQVIII was amazing. Although sometimes the battles got repetitive if you were stronger, the boss battles were hectic and hardly what I'd call boring. Totally worth it!

i got dragon quest 1 for my nes. excellent game. the challenge is refreshing compared to some of the modern rpgs

Dragon Warrior 1 is the only one I have gone all the way through. The game play is positively ancient by today's standards, however it still holds a sense of charm.
The random battles are enough to drive a person to insanity though. The reason why it took long to complete is because you spent about 15 hours levelling up, compared to only about 15 minutes travelling through the whole world.

On an semi-unrelated related note, I absolutely HATE the title "Dragon Quest". Yeah I know it was the original name of the game, but I grew up with "Dragon Warrior". I'm a "warrior" dammit. I want a big sword so I can go around disembowling vile creatures with my dancing blade of DEATH!
Now it's "Dragon Quest". Oh wowie! We are on a quest! Let's travel together hand in hand and skip along the flowery fields with bluebirds on our shoulders! Want to pet my little hamster? He's down the front of my pants!

Perhaps that last bit wasn't entirely necessary, but after sitting through a demo of 'Dragon Quest VIII' (and eventually falling asleep) I am disappointed in the direction the series went. The new anime "la la la" style greatly contrasts the medieval old English atmosphere I got from the first game in the series.

I'll consider playing through the rest of the NES games (and possibly the SNES) in the nigh future.

Dragon Warrior 2 was amazing. I remember really struggling towards the end and having to level up like a madman on that final island, but the game was absolutely incredible and has a fantastic soundtrack. On occasion I still play Dragon Warrior 1 for nostalgia, I love the sound effect for damage. It sounds like this dry SPLAT not really reproduced well in the sequels. What a weird thing to say eh? Whatever, I'm nuts.

I remember spending waaaaay too much time on DW4 with that infinite character creation feature. I had a frickin army of people of all sorts. I really OD'd, it wasn't pretty. I remember thinking Dragon Warrior 3 was excellent, but I beat it after a week long rental whereas I owned part 2, so I remember that a lot more. Those games were jewels. I would look at the japanese sequels at the time that SNES came out and cursed Enix for not porting them.

I actually made an original tribute Dragon Warrior game in Flash that you may enjoy. I remixed Doom and Duck Hunt with it. In the future I want to add map exploration and shops, but right now it's like an RPG version of duck hunt where you have to attack the ducks a few times, the ducks attack your dog, and the duck can do a critical hit (my friend and I thought it said Orictical hit in the original Final Fantasy, so that's the inside joke). I can't post a link to it due to my newbieness but if you google for "Doomed Duck Warrior" it's all over the web. Enjoy!

But they got rid of the class system didn't they? Which is kind of too bad, it would have been nice if they kept it and added some new classes. In Dragon Warrior 7, there were some pretty hectic boss battles (Hellcloud, Gamadius, etc.) but they were simple (even the last boss) if you mastered certain skills. It was a great system..

A lot of people are turned off by the repetitive battle system in DQ, and I think that's one of the big reasons it's not that popular in the US, and that's really a shame. Personally, I like the battle system. It's relaxing for me to sit and build levels/classes in the battle screen for a few hours.

Posted by Vampiro V. Empire

It actually wasn't the battles that I found boring, it was everything else. I guess I'm just getting sick of JRPGs, and didn't feel DQVIII did anything to stop it from being "just another day in the world of RPGs".

Well I defeated Dragon Warrior 3 the other day and I started Dragon Warrior 4 last night and progressed well in it today. The games have been getting better as they go along. DW4 seems as though it is going to end up being my favorite, I'm looking forward to finishing these games but in another way I'm kinda sad that I’m almost done with them. When I finished DW3, I was incredibly excited to start DW4 and I'm sure I'm going to want more when I finish it.

Oh well. There are many other games I need to move on towards and I always have the Dragon Warrior for the Wii to look forward to.

Dragon Warrior was one of the first games I played on NES. I love the old DW games. I haven't played any of the more recent ones but i've played a few of the NES titles.

In fact, maybe i'll start a new game on DW 1 soon. :D

Posted by rivercitytecmo

i've only played dw1 and dw4. dw1 can be insanely boring considering the levelling you have to do. i'm not big on nes rpgs, but i liked dw4. i loved dumping all the money into the casino and gambling like an idiot.

my roommate last year played dqviii a lot. it was kinda cool, just not really my thing, although i don't think i paid any attention at all to the story.

Posted by Fei-on Castor

I love DW1. I've never played any of the others. I played the first one because it came with an NES that I got at a pawn shop, a few years back.

But DW1 is a great game, though you do have to level a lot. Anytime I listen to the CD "Stunt" by Barenaked Ladies, I think of that games because I played that game while listening to that CD, over and over.

I believe Friday The 13th [another NES mention] transisted from day into night aswell, Dex. But more on the fly, rather than having some ****in' announcement every 5-10 minutes of gameplay, like Simon's Quest. Good game, just too full of stupid asinine concepts. =]

I've been playing dragon warrior 2 latly....I suck I am going to keep trying and post again when I get a little farther.

I have DW3 for the GBA, and a few DWs for NES, but I haven't played them in a while.
