I never was against 3rd party characters, but I didn't think they were needed and I wasn't expecting them. BOY, AM I PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!
I'm not sure how well Snake will work compared to the seemingly super-powered Nintendo characters, but I'm excited none the least. And I really hope (which I'm sure they will) they deliver on this more "robust" single player mode.

Yeah, he's very much wanted, I know that much. Personally, I don't really care, one way or the other. Glad to see him make it for everyone else, but Kid Icarus was a little before my time, so I don't know anything about the character other than what the trophy in SSBM tells you.

I remember reading somewhere that whoever was in charge of the game (can't recall the name right now) said that other third party characters were a definite possibility, and he mentioned Sonic as a possibility specifically, so there's a chance.
I figure Snake will be... well, different. I expect him to "feel" alot like any other character. His fighting style would probably be some type of karate, and he might handle something like Mario or Fox. Just wild speculation, though.
Did Samus actually get a sword in Zero Mission? I never played it, and I never beat the original Metroid, but from what I did play, I don't recall ever seeing/using a sword.
No. When Samus lost her Power Suit in ZM, all she had was a piddly Stun Gun. It seems she modified it to include an energy sword & whip, in case she loses it again.
I hearby dub the energy sword the Narpas Sword, after the original Metroid's password.

It bothers me that people keep saying Snake is out of place. The whole point of Super Smash Bros. is to make a bunch of very different characters fight eachother. I mean Marth is not a character that you would expect in the same game as Mr. Game & Watch. They're just so very different.
True, but all of the previous characters had some type of... cartoonish feel to them. Snake feels alot more like an actual human being than Mario does, which is why I say that. I don't doubt that he won't fit in by the games launch, it's just going to feel weird playing as someone whose games are set in such a realistic setting, whereas most if not all the Nintendo characters have atleast one fantasy element to their games.
Have you seen Nintendo's new franchises? Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and Disaster: Day of Crisis are a lot more gritty and realistic than you'd expect from Nintendo. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if one of the characters from those games ended up in Smash Bros. I think that Nintendo is aiming for a more mature look.
